Does the Catholic Church accept Mormons as your brother and sisters in Christ?

Catholics and Protestant believe that the Bible is the Word of God. Mormons believe the Bible is the Word of God as long as it is correctly translated. They basically believe that the Catholic Church distorted the Bible, therefore it is no longer trustworthy apart from the Mormon Magisterium which includes the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Price of Great Pearl. The Book of Mormon is considered to be the most correct of all books, and is above the Bible which has been corrupted by the Catholic Church. The spiritual battle is always about authority. 🙂
agreed brother 2nd, it has been about authority with the protestants as well. 😃

Thank you for both of those posts. It is the answers that I knew would be the official Magestrium position in regards to Mormonism. If Catholics still believe that Mormons are your Christian siblings, I suggest that you guys bring this up with the Catholic apologists on Catholic Answers. I am 99.99% certain that they would agree with me that Mormons are not your siblings in Christ.
The only thing that makes me pause with your thoughts, if you are basing this solely on the validity or invalidity of an individual Mormon’s baptism, you are failing to take into account that a big portion of Mormons are not cradle Mormons but converts…

Esp in Latin America…

Are you saying that Catholics who are baptised as infants then convert to Mormonism are okay, based on their Catholic baptism? And you guys accuse Protestants of teaching easy believism and hate OSAS theology! 😉

1 Corinthians 15

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

All I am saying is that Mormon baptism doesnt override it…

I didnt have to be re-baptized

If “brothers and sisters in Christ” is defined as having a valid baptism, many Mormons indeed have a previous valid baptism.

Could you please post this question to a Catholic Apologist on Catholic Answers?

If I understand Catholic Theology, baptism is necessary to be united to Christ. When Protestants become Catholic, usually the Protestant baptism is received as being valid. When a Mormon converts to the Catholic Faith, a Mormon has to be baptized to be in the Catholic Faith. The separated brethren designation is reserved for Protestants, correct. I know Orthodox Christians are also received as siblings in Chris too. The bottom line, the Catholic Church does not call Mormons to be your siblings in Christ, correct? The issue is not a matter of calling non-Christians to be evil. Heck, Jesus called His disciples to be evil. The issue is about the need of Christ and who we consider the mission field. It seems evangelism is very tough for Catholics since it seems Catholics appear very confused about Muslims, Jews, Mormons, and other non-Christian people.
I think you are partially correct, but you misunderstand the Catholic drive for evangelization. I would note that millions are converted to Catholicism each year around the world thanks to evangelization. 1.2 billion and growing for a reason.

Regarding evangelization:

848 "Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men."338

Catholic Theology teaches that infant baptism is not enough to enter the kingdom of God when a person grows up. So, what good are the Catholic sacraments if the person who is baptized as an infant, and becomes a Mormon convert in life? The difference in your example is in your return to the Catholic Faith. 🙂

I apologize for my lack of knowledge about mormonism. Can somebody briefly describe how mormons perform baptism?

So, with your understanding, are people less accountable if they are ignorant of the gospel, and have a better chance to enter Heaven due to their ignorance of the gospel than those who hear the gospel and reject it?

Mormons practice baptism by immersion only. The baptizer states the person’s name, then says “Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen”, and the person is then immersed in the water. Mormons do not baptize infants.

What is the definition of brothers and sisters in Christ?

What is the definition of brothers and sisters in Christ?
Those who are united to Christ by faith. I would say the historic creeds define orthodox Christianity. I think the Magisterium makes a statement of non-Catholics who are considered siblings in Christ which includes Orthodox and Protestants.

So brothers and sisters in Christ is not defined by baptism?

Um, well we Catholics accept that all sacrade authors were inspired by God there is no doubt of this. No one should believe that God guaronteed that everyone translating the bible did so with out error either intetional or accidental. In fact the fact that translation as well as copy error has occured is a simple and easily provable fact. In fact the one perfect copy of the bible which we accept is the Latin Vulgate which was jelously gurarded and maintained by the Vatican. All others intorduce the possibility of error. Not suggesting that my Douay-Rehiems bible or your KJV is deficiant, I’m just stateing reality.

If you believe that all translators and scribes copying the bible were inspired by God and there for have never made an error, then there is a book you seriously need to read:

Where we got the bible: Our debt to the Catholic Church

Or freely available online here

For Catholics this is not a problem, Jesus didn’t leave a dead book behind to guide the faith. He left a living breathing Church, and promised the gates of hell would never prevail against it.

Well, the KJV is a tad deficient, since it’s missing some books, but that’s for another thread ;).

2ndAdam, its late here so I need to go…
I did post the question to CAF apologist section…

I asked you what defined “brothers and sister Christ” and you gave me the above answer…

From my own experience all I can tell you is I feel I fall into the “Prodigal’s Daughter” parable…

I can’t explain to you what my exerience was when I was told that my Catholic baptism was still valid and that, in the eyes of the Church, I had never really stopped being Catholic, even if I went in a different direction.

Just my exerience…

You have a great night…Hope you find the answers you are looking for… 🙂

Interested to see if this will be too “off topic” for you 2nd ;).

TheosisM

Thanks for the brief description on how mormons baptize people. Just a further question for enlightenment - why the Catholic Church does not consider their (mormons) baptism valid? After all they mention the blessed Trinity?

I’ve noticed a running theme in all the threads 2nd Adam participates in…😉
He has no problem discussing scriptural authority in this thread, but in another titled “What is the Gospel” it was completely off topic. 🤷
