Does your non-Catholic Christian church teach you about Catholicism?

“What does your non-Catholic Christian Church teach you about Catholicism? Be honest and don’t pull any punches, we Catholics can handle it.”

Just a question Jimmy, when you say you find many of the comments here “suspect”…what is it you “suspect” them of? Lying? Are you saying that those of us who have answered your question posed to us are lying to you? If not, then what is it that is “suspect” about our answers. Did you want us to answer for every one of the "30,000 + " denominations that are claimed to exist or did you want each of us to answer for our congregation or meeting?

You may need to widen you base of respondents than simply those of us here at CAF if you want each and every groups answer…or did none of us answer to your liking? Unless we answer your question posed to us to your liking and in the manner you evidently have decided we should answer, I guess I can see your point…we answered truthfully, just not to your liking.

I’m at a loss how to further answer the question put forth in any other manner than which I responded to your original question as shown above.

Perhaps most of the Catholics here can “handle it”…you’re not seeming to fit into that group.🙂
Hello Publisher,

I always used the word many or some and not all, when describing some of our Protestant and non-Catholic Christian friends. I have read comments by some of the vary Christians here, on this thread, elsewhere at CAF and they still propagate false myths about Catholicism. If the original source of such false beliefs were not from the “non-Catholic Christian, Protestant world” then were did they originate? Why do they continue?

Moreover, why is it that there are few “Protestants” here at CAF and elsewhere , who will correct a fellow “Protestant” or non-Catholic Christian, when they hear or read a false Catholic Myth that they know to be false? Is is because it doesn’t “help” the “Protestant Cause against Catholicism”.

Additionally, can you please respond to my comment regarding the need for Christians and Christian religions to be honest about other Christian religions and to teach honesty and correct falsehoods. This includes honesty when it comes to commenting on other Christian religions, including Catholicism.

I know that you will provide a good and honest response to my questions here, you usually do. Would you please address the comments in my previous post as well; are they not true for some “Protestant” religions?

Thank You Friend 👍

Hello Publisher,

I always used the word many or some and not all, when describing some of our Protestant and non-Catholic Christian friends. I have read comments by some of the vary Christians here, on this thread, elsewhere at CAF and they still propagate false myths about Catholicism. If the original source of such false beliefs were not from the “non-Catholic Christian, Protestant world” then were did they originate? Why do they continue?

I can no more answers why “some” Protestants do the things they do than you can answer why “some” Catholics propagate “myths” concerning “some” Protestants. I am not able to look into their hearts and minds to make that determination. I am here at CAF for the very reason to insure that I…I…do not speak in error concerning others beliefs.

Again Jimmy, I cannot answer for others, to do so would not be speaking in truth. I am not interested in any “Protestant cause against Catholicism” or any “Catholic cause against Protestantism”. I seek to live in a Spirit and virtue of life that takes away the need to speak falsehood…I seek, with the Lord’s help to be a Friend.

Additionally, can you please respond to my comment regarding the need for Christians and Christian religions to be honest about other Christian religions and to teach honesty and correct falsehoods. This includes honesty when it comes to commenting on other Christian religions, including Catholicism.

On this we agree Jimmy, but I am not “in charge” of how others respond…I can only make sure when falsehoods are stated and I am able to dispell those falsehoods, that I do so.

I know that you will provide a good and honest response to my questions here, you usually do. Would you please address the comments in my previous post as well; are they not true for some “Protestant” religions?

Jimmy, I’m sure “some” Protestant groups do not live in that virtue of life that seeks to live in “truth”, Westboro Baptist Church and Jact Chick Publications come to mind…I can not even guess why they feel the way they do…other than they live in “invincible ignorance” in some matters…just as I am sure there are some Catholic groups that you may or may not know about which will when occasion arise…“slant” the truth against other religious groups. I can no more “explain” why some people do what they do any more than you can.

**But again…what is it you find “suspect” concerning our answers? Did we not provide you an answer to your questions asked of us?

I would be interested in hearing your explanation as to “suspect”…I read “suspect” as “lie”…was this your intent by use of the word?**

Thank You Friend 👍
You’re welcome Friend Jimmy

Jimmy my Brother how are you?? Sorry to barge in to both of you but I wanted to answer.

I can honestly tell you some of the false beliefs/bad teachings originate from Roman Catholics. I’ll give you an example. My wife is Presbyterian. I grew up Roman Catholic and had a pretty good education. We were in a discussion with some friends who are Roman Catholic. Somehow religion came up. In a friendly way of course:) We started comparing beliefs. Now our Roman Catholics friends said that Protestants don’t believe in the Immaculate Conception. My wife said yes we do we believe in the virgin birth. So I started laughing expecting our Roman Catholic friends to make a correction. Instead they said “you do”? We didn’t think they did. So I said excuse me but as a Roman Catholic I can’t believe what you just said. They asked why so I explained what the Immaculate Conception actually meant. Our Roman Catholic friends said “are you sure, we thought it was the virgin birth”. My wife said me too. So I proved it to them and they said, “oh, I don’t know if I believe that”. Now here are self-professed devout Catholics that attend services every week.

Then the next comparison was the communion of saints discussion. Our Roman Catholic friends said “well protestants don’t pray to Saints”. I said neither do Roman Catholics. They looked at me like I had 2 heads. So I asked if they ever heard of the communion of Saints and if they were familiar with the doctrine. They explained what they thought it meant, admitting that they thought praying to a Saint or Mary meant they were asking them for help. So I explained the intercessory part of it and again they were almost stupified by it. Unfortunately I run into this alot. There are many Roman Catholics that either don’t know their own doctrines, don’t understand them, or don’t agree with them. So I would say they are part of the problem. I’ve met Protestants that know RCC doctrine better than some Roman Catholics.
I have no problem correcting a Protestant and they should be corrected.
Additionally, can you please respond to my comment regarding the need for Christians and Christian religions to be honest about other Christian religions and to teach honesty and correct falsehoods. Agree 100%🙂
I know that you will provide a good and honest response to my questions here, you usually do. Would you please address the comments in my previous post as well; are they not true for some “Protestant” religions?
Have to look at the previous post.

A General Observation

I find many of these comments here by non-Catholic Christians somewhat suspect, incredulous and disingenuous. Isn’t “Honesty” a hallmark of “Christianity”?

Honesty is…but when some of us answer truthfully it still is not believed…is that what you’re saying?

If anti-Catholic comments and false anti-Catholic beliefs such as “Catholic’s worship Mary”.do not originate from “Protestant” leaders or “Protestant” religions, then where do these beliefs allegedly come from?

**I’m sure they do originate with some Protestant leaders and laymen as they do not investigate the truth. As I’ve said before, we tend to speak past one another…we tend to use our “definitions” about what others believe instead of using the definitions the particular religious group in question uses.

I have had a bias against Mormon belief…I’ve tried to understand it but I find I am not able to…until I read the book “How Wide the Divide”…then I began to understand Mormon theology a tad bit better…at least enough to be able to get my mind around some of their beliefs…not how I see their beliefs, but how they see their beliefs…it is a difficut undertaking to set aside our preconceptions and stand in another’s shoes…which in my opinion, none of us do enough, Protestant nor Catholic.**

They were not pulled “out of thin air” and they do exist. They don’t come from the secular world. Furthermore, wouldn’t it be the responsibility of other non-Catholic Christian leaders to correct false myths about Catholicism by their members, once they become aware of a problem in their membership, regarding such false beliefs.

No, they were not “pulled out of thin air”, but neither for the most part is there some insidious conspiracy to speak falsehood…again…we speak past one another. It is more an aspect of not understanding than it is “deceit”.

What about the whole “Left Behind” series and the “Christian” video mania, surrounding it? Don’t responsible “Christian” leaders have a morale and “Christian” responsibility to tell the truth?

I don’t know, I’ve never read “Left Behind” nor do I follow the LaHay’s or Jenkins of the world and what they say or do…I’m sure if I thought it through, I could understand where they are coming from…I do believe they speak error in many aspects of their beliefs…but I trust in grace and mercy more than I disdain their theology…what is important to me, do they speak in kindness, gentleness, do their lives point to Christ…but they are men of conviction…and while I do not share that conviction…I will seek to offer them the respect to follow their own conscience…as difficult as that may be at times, but to be less than “Christian” myself does not excuse me from responsibility.

Don’t responsible “Christian” leaders and all Christians for that matter have a morale and “Christian” obligation to correct anti-Catholic information, which they know to be false?

I believe so, but since I am not priviy to all the circumstances of what goes on in other groups and meetings…all I know is what is required of me…I must make sure the beam is removed from my eye before I begin worrying about the splinter in another’s.

Is the Roman Catholic Church or are we Catholics allowed to lie about “Protestants” if it supports “our cause”? For instance can we as Catholics say that “Protestants” worship their individual leaders more than Jesus”?

**I hope not…perhaps that is a question you will need to answers as you are Catholic. **

I believe personally that many “Christians” who claim to want “Christian Unity”, only want the “Christian Unity” that doesn’t include the Roman Catholic Church. Christian Unity must first start with Christian Truth.

You may be right that some don’t want to include Catholics…I would think the reverse is also true…Unity can only occur if we who are Protestant become Catholic…so in a real way…what I read on CAF if Unity is to occur it doesn’t include Protestants.

Please tell me where I am wrong. 👍

Hello Publisher,

Like I posted earlier, “I know that you will provide a good and honest response to my questions here, you usually do.”… I was
right… 👍

Great post Publisher (#64); charity, maturity, honesty and integrity all fond in one post. You are the type of non-Catholic Christian who brings the best out in me (here at CAF) as a Catholic. Now I am going to have really make it a point to be nice to you, darn it… :doh2:

My “nice list” seems to be growing larger, every day. Maybe one of these days I won’t have anything to post.

Thank you and God bless you.

Jimmy,

I understand why you posted the question. I don’t think any of us (Catholics, that is) think that all Protestant denominations preach anti-Catholicism.

Growing up Southern Baptist, though, I do think that anti-Catholicism plays an important roll in that particular sect. Most of the anti-Catholicism I’ve faced over the years have come from Baptists. As a matter of fact, I’ve been fighting with one from the Mississippi Gulf Coast area on my blog for well over a year now.

It’s a growing movement and we must be aware it of … and know how to fight it. (Heck, visit the woman’s “Bible Blog” and read her posts … she uses it to post anti-Catholic sentiments on a daily basis it seems.)

As a matter of fact, she posted this on my blog yesterday when I posted a link to JustAServant’s conversion blog:

***Posted by Kerri: ***

I went and read the link about the so called fundamentlist who converted and Pam, it doesn’t sound like the guy was ever really saved. In his testimony he says I told the preacher I was born again. He never tells about being born again though and if he had been it would be much bigger deal than he made it. Futher more HE decided to become a preacher - he doesn’t mention any call of God. THAT makes a big difference. Everyone who claims to be a Christian isn’t necessarily really a Christian.

*You say I need to research and read this and that. Pam, I trust the Scriptures, the Word of God. *

*You claim the Bible is a Catholic book, but it does NOT mention praying to saints or Mary. It does not teach what the RCC does about the Eucharist. It does NOT mention purgatory. It does NOT set up a church as the RCC is set up. It does NOT mention a “pope” anywhere in it. It does not teach salvation or keeping salvation through works. It does NOT mention confession of sin to man. It does NOT mention penance. I could go on. *

*If God really set up the Catholic church doesn’t it make sense the Bible would say at least some of those things. But the ONLY way you get those teachings are through your “early church fathers” and declarations of your popes. *

*Satan set up a counterfeit church to draw millions away from the truth and it has worked. The narrow way - the true way - is still what the Bible says. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Trust in HIM alone. He did everything necessary for salvation. No amount of penance and zealous defending of the RCC doctrines will earn your salvation or forgiveness of your sins. ONLY the blood of Jesus can wash them away forever. You receive Him by faith not in bread and wine. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. *

NIce post and nice Blog, Thank you.

Well what I have learned fromt hese forums
The CC is the One True Church
The pope is infallable in faith and morals
Apostolic succession
The Church has 3 parts–pope, bible, sacred tradition

None of which I believe. Honestly, when I came here 2 years ago I didnt think we were that different, but I find out we are:(
Gosh, I hope you still hang around to keep learning, ALLFORHIM. Catholicism does not teach that the Pope is infallible in faith and morals, or that “The Church has 3 parts–pope, bible, sacred tradition”

Maybe once you learn what the Church actually teaches, you will find that we are not that different?

My church (Southern Baptist) stays as far away from doctrine as possible. It doesn’t teach about the beliefs of Catholics or any other denomination. It doesn’t even do a very good job of teaching what Baptists believe.

Then I give your preacher a LOT of credit. The bread and butter of many Baptist Churches is anti-Catholicism. (Born and raised in it…)

You are right on the second part. As Baptists, the churches generally try to be as independent at possible, so the beliefs of each parish generally depend on that of the preacher. That always annoyed me, too. I like structure. 😛

Could you correct me then because that is all I hear from catholics. Maybe Im s=wording it wrong:o You know how semantics can get one in trouble;)

If I may jump in. The pope is infallible when teaching from his position as pope (ex cathedra) on matters of faith and morals. It has absolutly nothing to do with behavior or any other form of pronouncement, such as historical fact.

The Catholic Faith is made up of three authorities: Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium, which is the unified teaching of the pope and the priests and bishops with him. It is much more than the pope. It is the unified voice of the Church Universal.

The only thing I’ve heard concerning Catholics in my meeting was quote from George Fox…

“All christians are believers, both Protestants and Papists; The Lord opened to me that if all were believers, then they were all born of God, and had passed from death to life; [becoming a new creature, old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new] and that none were true believers unless that had happened; and though others said they were believers, yet they were not.”

True believers…are those whom have experienced Christ and live a life demonstrating that experience…if one hasn’t experienced Christ in a life changing encounter then it doesn’t matter what church sign is in front of the building they meet in.
That sums it up 👍

A loving baptist is getting to heaven before a hateful catholic - and vice versa. Catholics dont have a monopoly on heaven as the church once famously and erroneously taught

30+ years ago, the folks I fell in with said just about nothing about the Catholic Church. It wasn’t on their radar.

Tons of falsity came my way. I was kid.

I think I understand what you’re saying here, but …in my humble opinion, the Catholic Church is very relevant when teaching about Christ and Him crucified. 😃

I think that you meant to. The problem is that with the short version, you can leave out the wrong words, for example leaving teaching out of the infallibility or changing Magisterium to Pope. But, no harm no foul. 🙂

Hello Hisalone,

How do you know how I spend my time? Are you addressing me personally or Catholicism in general?

You are not starting another one of those bad Catholic rumors, are you?

Among many other Christian Truths, the Roman Catholic Church does “teach Christ and Him crucified”, using your words.

The focal point of Catholicism is on Jesus Christ. Do you know much about Catholicism?

How is it (if this applies) that your denomination can for instance, “avoid Mary”. Does your church ignore the “Nativity Story” or the “Wedding at Cana”?

Christianity is much more than a few “sound-bites” or “talking-points” and it is much more than a “handful” of Bibles verses.

BTW your post doesn’t answer the question posed in this thread, what is your response to the question posed here?

Thanks for your post. 👍
