Maybe he might soon be heading back to Argentina to pick up some his belongings hehe

Don’t get me wrong, I love his humility, but I wonder how his tendency to eschew luxuries will put him at odds with his security. I also wonder if he will refuse to live in the papal apartments, use Castle Gandolpho, or any of the papal air transports. I wonder how he will make the transition to world leader. I fear for him that the stress of being a quiet humble man will conflict with the precedents of a worldly Pope set by PP JPII.

So true. I think he will adapt somewhat while trying to preserve what he can preserve.

He is meeting with Benedict XVI today. It’s such a blessing to have the former pope there to consult with. I believe Benedict XVI will give him some excellent pointers and help out in his transition. Benedict was also a very humble man who came to become a respected and well loved Pope and world leader. I think Pope Francis will be ok 🙂 But we should definitely pray for the Holy Father.

Who knows, maybe he’ll set his own precedent for a Pope? 😉

I love his humility thus far too. I often have thought there is too much luxury.

I am just so glad the world now knows something about the Jesuit order. I have been on this site for almost a year and rarely hear anything about them. I have no worries that Pope Francis will be able to handle anything that comes up because he will find strength in God as have all the Popes before him. It will be different, but I believe wonderful for The Church.

Before moving, one of my favorite priests was a Jesuit. But I haven’t heard much about Jesuits on this site either.

True. I suspect based on the little I’ve read that Pope Francis won’t be a globe trotter. 😃 if his Episcopal career is any indication I don’t think he will be in the public eye any more than minimally required.

The luxury is one of those things it will be hard to avoid. Armored limousines generally are Mercedes not Ford Pintos. 😉 I also suspect his security detail will have a conniption if he insists to continue flying economy on commercial flights. That’s why I pray that the Swiss guard can come to a compromise that keeps Pope Francis safe while allowing him to remain true to his humility with regard to worldly goods.

Just my personal opinion here: If you listened to the secular media in the time before the conclave, the choices for the Papacy were exclusively binary: we either would get a hip, young, politically liberal, abortion/female-ordination/contraception-loving pope, or an old, theologically conservative, woman/gay/poor-hating pope. That’s it, the media only gave the conclave two options.

The Holy Spirit, thankfully, does not listen to media commentators’ theology. Instead, I think He gave us just what the Church needs most in these times, when we divide ourselves by theology, by class, by race, by politics, and a hundred other divisions thought up by Our Ancient Enemy. We got something else entirely, to the shock and surprise and discombobulation of the media.

We got a Christocentric Pope.

As the popular meme says, Well played, Holy Spirit. Well played.

The only person who can unite us, both within the Church and out, is Christ. The more the current Pope conforms himself to Christ’s example - in his love of the sacraments, in his concern for the poor and downtrodden, in his desire to follow God’s Law - the more unifying he will be, urbi et orbi. All our recent Popes have been Christocentric - I love John Paul II, and I love Benedict, both of whom provided the leadership and the example their times required, but I think our new Pope will provide a new example for a new era of how we can lead a radically Christ-centered life. I think the example Pope Francis gives us will be quite a surprise to the modern culture.
