Jesus went to the sinners to convert them. That is exactly what the Sisters of Mary did.

I thought the show did a pretty good job showing the Sisters’ life. The following was written by my daughter who is in her 3rd year at the convent (and was pictured in the Oprah show for a couple of nano seconds).
It really has been a crazy week. Having the camera men, the associate producer, and Lisa Ling (who is apparently famous) at the Motherhouse was really weird. They even taped us doing spiritual reading. We were all just sitting there in silence reading our books. I was keeping custody of the eyes at all costs, but in my peripheral vision I kept seeing men in black going back and forth through the chapel. They were amazingly quiet, but I don’t think any of us actually read more than a paragraph. It was even more strange them taping in the refectory, Those camera men get so close to your face. When you are watching things like that on T.V. you always think that they are zooming in, but they really are that close. How is anyone supposed to not look at the camera?! The camera man was walking really slowly down the line of us eating and stopped right in front of me. I was eating shredded wheat and my one thought was: should I keep chewing? When the camera men left, just before we said the grace after meals, Mother just looked up at us and said, “All for Jesus!” I have loads of stories to tell you for when you come on visiting day! I was in one of the groups chosen to be interviewed here at the Motherhouse. I got away without saying anything since we were that last interview and the camera ran out of batteries. When they replaced it, it ran out of film. So I really lucked out, but it seemed that they were mostly asking a lot of the same questions to all the groups. Actually we thought that the entire thing was probably going to be all about chastity because it was obvious that Lisa Ling could not wrap her mind around it. None of the people who came had any faith at all and if you don’t look at our life from a stand point of faith, it makes absolutely no sense. So, as you can imagine, in every question that we answered we were just working for the salvation of souls.
Sr. Mary Judith turned to Lisa before she left and just said, “Whenever you’re ready. He’s waiting for you”… and then Lisa just started crying. The producer, Brad, said that we were by far the happiest people he has ever met.
Anyway, I know a lot of people out there are going to think we are crazy for marching right into the lion’s den, but this is an opportunity to save souls that we would normally never be able to reach. We will just have to place our trust in God that He will use this for His greater glory. From all that we gave them, we are pretty sure that it would be almost impossible to spin it in a bad light.

Thank you and God bless you for sharing this. Please tell your daughter thank you for being a Sister to us all and for praying for us and I’m praying for her and for all the other Dominican Sisters as well.

JReducation- Thank you and God bless you for sharing this information. I’m praying for you and for your brothers.

Off topic (but not really) did anyone see this " A day in the life: The Carmel of St. Joseph"?

I saw the segment - it was not all about the sisters, it is true. I think the gist of the show was to show ‘alternate’ lifestyles some women have chosen.

Honestly, I think it was a good thing they were on Oprah’s show - she hosts it but the sisters did speak for themselves and did so in a candid and elegant manner. Her own attitude in so far as could be observed seemed fairly neutral.

we live in an age hostile to the Church - the people who watch Oprah are very varied - I watch and despise much of what she supports. She often has interesting segments and sometimes she just plugs her own agenda. I think I can make the distinction and I think many of her viewers can too.

For those who missed the show or want to see it again, they will be re-broadcasting the show on Monday (Aug 16).

Also, I was there last week for my daughter’s first profession, and the Oprah people were there filming again. I heard that the show was so successful that they are doing a follow-up. I’m not sure when that show will be aired.

The pictures of the first profession are on their website at

I normally do not recommend this, but be sure to watch Oprah today!

The following is from the Dominican Sisters of Mary Mother of the Eucharist in Ann Arbor Michigan:

We are happy to announce that the Sisters’ appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show had such a positive response when it first aired on February 9th, that they have decided to broadcast it again on Monday, August 16th. Please be sure to check your local listings for the time and station in your area. Special thanks to all of our friends who offered such a positive response last time.

Sr. Mary Judith, O.P., Lac La Ronge, Saskatchewan, CA and Sr. Miriam, O.P, , Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Are from the same Province as me. 👍
Me too! Actually, Sr. Mary Judith has two brothers who are seminarians with the Society of St. John Cantius in Chicago. I am good friends with the one brother - Br. Joshua, who made final vows last year. 👍

I missed the airing in February, but taped it on the 16th and I have to say it was AMAZING. For the first time I have ever seen it, television actually portrayed in an honest way what it means to be a Catholic. The sisters were wonderful and it was easy to see their love of Christ. It was the first time I’ve ever heard on national TV that chastity and prayerful discipline give you the freedom to be more yourself as opposed to repressing and harming you. I think it was miraculous. From Lisa Ling’s obvious spiritual re-awakening (my favorite phrase from a friend is "The Holy Spirit can be such a nag 🙂 " ) to Oprah’s shock and visibly seeing her trying to grasp what they were saying and seeing the pure TRUTH of it. WOW!

I saw them on Oprah too. It was amazing. Truly wonderful. And while I don’t agree with Oprah’s beliefs, she respectfully portrayed the Dominicans for who they are.

Awesome and that’s so wonderful that God has called this family into religious life.

I don’t think Oprah knows what to believe. I think she is searching and the Holy spirit is clearly working on her and through her show to get Christ’s message out.

She and Lisa Ling should be careful, because if she spends too much time at that convent, she will be converted!

I speak from experience!

Did Oprah also talk about “The secret life of a Geisha?” I recall Oprah talking to a Geisha when it aired in February as well as the Dominican Sisters and from what I recall the Geisha didn’t really seem comfortable but the Sisters well that was a different story.

Off topic I did not know that Lisa Ling’s sister Laura Ling was kidnapped last year. Does anybody know if she escaped or was rescued or anything?

Actually the fact that Oprah featured geisha alongside nuns in that episode just makes me wish I could actually watch the whole thing. The way I see it, they both are women who dedicate themselves to human culture (nuns to religion while geisha to art).

The show was a rerun of the February one. I think that it might have been in a different order.

I don’t remember the details but Lisa’s sister is free. She also has had a baby. I saw Lisa on the Today Show the week after she was in Ann Arbor for the sisters’ perpetual vows. The teaser was “what is she up too”( I thought well I know where she was last week, about six rows ahead of me in Church) She talked about her sister and the baby. She said she is working for the Oprah Network and can’t give details but has filmed five shows. She said that they had to do with faith.
This is an article about her being freed. It was the first I found huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/04/north-korea-welcomes-bill_n_250682.html

Mother Assumpta Long will be the guest today (Monday August 30) on Catholic Answers Live Radio at 4:00pm Pacific time. She will be talking about how normal people can dedicate themselves entirely to God …to become religious sisters, brothers, etc. If you miss it today you can catch it in the archives later this week.

The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist will be on Oprah again!
The following is an e-mail from them:

sistersofmary.org/
Dear Friends,

The Dominican Sisters of Mary will be featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show on Tuesday, November 23rd.

This is a new show that includes interviews with Mother Assumpta, Sr. Joseph Andrew, Sr. Mary Samuel, Sr. John Dominic and other Sisters; as well as on-site filming of the First and Final Profession Masses and this year’s Entrance Day, during which we welcomed 22 Aspirants.

The show will feature the experience of a Sister entering religious life and the meaning of religious profession as being ‘married’ to Christ.

You may recall that Oprah first reached out to our community on February 9th of this year due to an interest in the hidden aspects of religious life. Click here to watch an excerpt from that program.

The response from the first show was so positive that the Sisters were asked if we would be open to another opportunity to share our life. We have accepted this invitation in the hopes of reaching an audience we might not otherwise reach with the witness of our life and the Gospel. Please join us in praying that the show will be for the good of souls and the honor of God.

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, let us give thanks to God for His bountiful goodness. May God bless you and your families during this holiday season.

In Jesus and Mary,
The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist

Today’s the day. Make sure you catch the show if you are interested.

I’m going to be in class. Do you know if there will be a way to watch it later?

Totus tuus Maria!
Let’s see what the good God wills.

Clips of the show the last time Oprah interviewed the sisters ended up on youtube. Maybe that will happen again although I don’t know how they get around the copyright issues.

I would search for Oprah and Dominican sisters.
