Donald Trump Jr emails show Russia communication

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that nobody on his campaign had any involvement with Russia.

I think this has put the kibosh on that self-confident claim. His own blinkin’ son had been told that a lawyer offering damaging material about Clinton was part of Russian government efforts to help his father’s election campaign. And he went to that meeting, under cover of secrecy, with Kushner and Manafort.
No it doesn’t. President Trump will say his son and Kushner were never offially a part of the campaign, they were family just like his other children and not paid, and don’t forget, Manafort was let go.

See how easy it will be for people to justify what he said.

It’s relevant for several reasons. First, because these thin accusations of Trump appear intended to deflect from the truly outrageous relationships Hillary Clinton, Podesta and perhaps others had with Russian agents; matters that really cry out for investigation.
These emails have moved us past the “accusation” stage. Also, The Republicans who presumably believe Clinton/Podesta/Russia conspiracies control the entire government, they’re free to investigate at will. If there’s anything there why haven’t they started?
Second, because it points out the utter bias of the media, which ignores the elephant in the room in order to focus on an alleged flea that isn’t even there.
That “alleged flea” is why Trump hasn’t defended his son, his lawyers have advised him not to. One White House aide described the email release as “the sum of all fears” and is lawyering up (why he hadn’t up to this point when so many other staffers had is a mystery).

You undoubtedly wish to believe that listening to a Russian who claimed to “have the goods” on Hillary Clinton’s Russian collusion is somehow proof of something much bigger and the end of President Trump.

And you don’t, of course, have any idea what Trump’s lawyers have told him. But it can be entertaining to imagine things against one’s political enemies, particularly if sourced to people like “one white house aide” or “unnamed source” or “high government official”.
It excuses one from actually demanding to know anything real.

Trump Jr. originally told the Times this was about adoptions. But in the emails, he says in response to an offer to meet with a Russian with dirt on Clinton: “If it’s what you say, I love it".

Why did he make such a blatant lie at first blush and why was this previously undisclosed meeting with an influential Russian lawyer in Trump Tower during the heat of the 2016 presidential campaign, accompanied by Kushner and Manafort, never revealed?

There’s a huge lack of transparency and obfuscation here. It’s not normal, and it may not even be legal, to meet with a foreign adversary expecting dirt on your opponent. That’s intent to conspire with a foreign government’s meddling in your country’s democratic process imho.
Why did Trump, Jr. lie at first? Youth and inexperience? Perhaps. Or perhaps the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

And finally, it might eventually be discovered that the real “Russian effort” here is to utilize the American left to weaken the American government by reducing the Trump administration to powerlessness; an effort that might have preceded the election itself.
We can’t forget Hillary and her reset button.

How do you know DTJ doesn’t have 30,000 deleted emails?
Hillary Clinton’s email affair was a scandal: there is no doubt in my mind about that. And she got away with it!

However, Trump and his son are also embroiled in a scandal right here, right now. Since Hillary got away with it, is it logical to allow a sitting President and one of his sons (and possibly his son-in-law as well) to walk? Not in my book.

So, ENOUGH with Hillary! This is about the Trump administration and its (probable) collusion with a foreign–and relatively hostile–government. Let’s focus on that and find out where it leads. I hope, for the good of the country, that it leads nowhere; but I have serious doubts about that at this point.

In other words, does any of this constitute a clear crime or even a vague inkblot image of a crime?
No, at least not on these facts.
One image that a lot of experts see in these stories is a possible violation of the federal law banning foreign contributions to federal campaigns — ironically the very claim that the meeting was called to discuss with regard to Hillary Clinton. The relevant law is 36 U.S.C. 510, which bars direct or indirect contributions or other things of value from a foreign national. MSNBC justice and security analyst Matthew Miller said Trump Jr. could now go to jail because “it doesn’t have to be money … it can be, potentially, accepting information. So he’s potentially confessing in his statement to committing a crime.”
Of course, the crux is “other thing of value.” Under this approach, a court would have to include information as a thing of value like money and then declare that Trump Jr. solicited the information by agreeing to go to the meeting. If that were the case, the wide array of meetings by politicians and their aides with foreign nationals would suddenly become possible criminal violations.
It is common for foreign governments to withhold or take actions to influence elections in other countries. Information is often shared through various channels during elections from lobbyists, non-government organizations, and government officials. This includes former Clinton aide Alexandra Chalupa, who allegedly worked with Ukrainian government officials and journalists to come up with dirt on Trump and Manafort.
Consider the implications of such an unprecedented extension of the criminal code. The sharing of information — even possible criminal conduct by a leading political figure — would be treated the same as accepting cash. It would constitute a major threat to free speech, the free press and the right of association. It would also expose a broad spectrum of political speech to possible criminal prosecution.
Executive branch officials could then investigate campaigns on any meetings where information or tips might have originated from a foreign source. Such an expansion would likely hit challengers the hardest, since sitting presidents not only control the Justice Department but the government has a myriad of back channels in communicating with foreign officials.
While those contacts could be dismissed as “official communications,” a challenger could be viewed as consorting with foreigners. Under this interpretation, a foreign non-government organization or foreign academic feeding damaging information on Trump’s foreign investments or business activities could be viewed as a federal crime.

Maybe I’ve watched too many Columbo episodes but when you deny something you haven’t been officially accused of, you do raise a little bit of suspicion.

I hope you won’t have your bubble burst…:bounce:

As usual, the anti-Trump hysteria has turned something benign into the biggest political scandal in A6merician history. “IMPEACH THE AUDULTUROUS RACIST BIGOTED HOMOPHOBIC NAZI GRAND WIZARD SATANIC HIGH PRIEST SEXIST WOMANIZING MAN”…

Don’t you think some of this could be a tad, just a tad, blown out of proportion??

Just relax, peeps. He’s a good guy 😉

I think what we have learned about Russian involvement in the elections is that Russia was involved in lots of areas and probably brokered dossiers on many candidates through the primary season and focused on Clinton and Trump as they became front runners and their party nominees …

1st - We have Russian ties to the Trump “Golden Showers” Dossier and the Ukraine government as another foreign actor working with is that collusion and treason?] with the Clinton campaign … the British spy - Christopher Steele, Fusion GPS

2nd - We have this offer of a we have “Dirt on Clinton” meeting - with a Russian and the inference that the information has its origin with the Russian government… this also originates with a Brit - Rob Goldstone - and the information details sorely lacking in the email chain …

What we know -
From the 1st - we know that the FBI wanted to pay for the intel and someone actually paid for its creation - that person or entity could be considered to have colluded with the Russians - as the person who was paying for dirt on Trump and Russian connections with Russian informants - seems like a direct form of collusion and they obviously wanted to impact the election … Ditto the Ukraine involvement with the Clinton camp - the Ukrainians obviously felt they had a stake on the outcome of the US 2016 presidential election …

From the 2nd - we dont have a clue if the information was solicited and paid for - there is no information. Did the Russian government reach out to this Goldstone guy? There is too little information and we dont even know what the supposed damaging information was - unlike all the information that was leaked about the Trump Dossier … What was the outcome of the meeting - There does not seem to have been any Dirt on Clinton discussed - no dossier … it was an entirely different topic from dirt on Clinton and of no interest related to the election at all - and that seems to have ended the issue - the players never interacted after … no money, no information, no story …

From the 1st - we know that McCain and the Media and the FBI all viewed the dossier on Trump and used it to hurt Trump politically before and after his election …

From the 2nd - we dont know if information exists and who has ot or viewed it - except we do know that Trump nor Trumps campaign obtained or used that information to hurt Clinton

From my understanding of human nature, my observations and all of the media reports year the last year and a half and nearly 50 years of watching national and international politics and politicians - If Putin had a choice in who occupies White House - it would be Clinton. I think he probably does have information on her and or Bill that he could use to his advantage and/ or would try to … Clinton is weak and Putin knows that.

My take is Russia meddles not so much as to affect and outcome but to gain information for use with whomever occupies the Oval Office - they play all sides and are an equal opportunity scoundrel

This situation looks like McCain and the FBI bought the story line “Hook, Line and Sinker” … McCain and Comey probably just wanted something / anything on Trump so bad they lost sight of reality, -Trump was the mastermind behind this entire dossier story in the hopes of driving his detractors nuts and showing how gullible they are … I think the Comey;s and the McCain’s just really wanted something on Trump so much they lost their minds … sadly

Donald Jr - never really bit at all and walked away - why? Could be he just did not know how to play the game - and did not participate after the initial meeting fizzled, maybe there was not any “There” there, or maybe he has a little more ethics and class - or a combination of all three - My pick is inexperience coupled with nothing much there that wasn’t already in the press

Interview is probably the wrong word. More like “give a platform to spin what looks very questionable actions”.
Which I think is not a good judgement call. He should really just be quiet for now.
