**Republican presidential contender Donald Trump has been criticised for mocking a disabled New York Times reporter.
Mr Trump performed an impression of Serge Kovaleski, who suffers from a congenital joint condition, at a rally.
He has used a 2001 article by Mr Kovaleski to back up widely disputed claims that “thousands” of Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the 9/11 attacks.
The New York Times called Mr Trump’s actions “outrageous”.**
‘The poor guy’
Referring to the 2001 article (published by the Washington Post) at a South Carolina rally on Tuesday night, Mr Trump called Mr Kovaleski “a nice reporter”.
“Now the poor guy, you gotta see this guy,” he continued, before launching into an apparent impression of Mr Kovaleski, waving his arms around with his hands at an odd angle.
“Uhh I don’t know what I said. Uhh I don’t remember. He’s going like ‘I don’t remember. Maybe that’s what I said.’”
Mr Kovaleski has arthrogryposis, a condition that affects the movement of joints and is noticeable in his right arm and hand.
A New York Times spokeswoman told news site Politico: “We think it’s outrageous that he would ridicule the appearance of one of our reporters.”
The original Washington Post article by Mr Kovaleski said that authorities in Jersey City “detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river”.
Since Trump’s claims about Muslim Americans celebrating 9/11, the reporter has said he does “not recall anyone saying there were thousands, or even hundreds, of people celebrating”.
‘Unsurprising’
The mayor of Jersey City has said Mr Trump’s claims are “plain wrong”.
Mr Kovaleski reported on Mr Trump between 1987 and 1993. He has said he is sure the businessman remembers him and his physical condition, the Washington Post reported.
“The sad part about it is, it didn’t in the slightest bit jar or surprise me that Donald Trump would do something this low-rent, given his track record,” he was quoted as saying.
Donald Trump’s campaign has not officially commented, but the tycoon has taken to Twitter to attack the New York Times.

Didn’t I say this guy was a horrid individual?

So Christ-like Donald, really, way to go…😦

I still cannot fathom why anybody would want to vote for him over other contenders like Rubio…

Unless, of course, playground bullies are your thing and you also happen to think that one of their ilk deserves the top job in the world with the ability to influence the life of every single person on the planet…

I don’t expect sainthood or incorruptibility from politicians but common on, a bit of basic human decency and tact wouldn’t go amiss…

It makes me sick to the stomach that these are the kind of men our societies reward. Shame on us then!

Words fail me.

However, I suppose, what else can be expected from a multi-billionaire, megalomaniac canvassing to run for US President, in the ‘era of the Kardashians’.
Amen to that pepipop! 👍

Lots of people make fun of Donald Trump’s appearance too, does that outrage anybody? The funny thing is most people aren’t really all that outraged, but since it’s Donald Trump, it’s fun to feign outrage. As I’ve always said, there’s no outrage more satisfying than mock outrage.

I know what I’m going to say does not justify it, but when someone mocks someone who cannot walk, talk, has Down syndrome, mental retardation, autism, it does look bad, considering that throughout civilization these individuals have been denegrated badly.

With Trump, it’s mainly about his hair.

Yes, people make fun of other things, but Trump also looks for it.

I’m not saying, well, trump gets made fun of, now make it even. But it does look bad whenever you mock someone especially when their disabled.

This isn’t some kid with Down’s or autism, this is a reporter for a major publication that has a reputation for playing “gotcha” with, mainly Republican candidates. If anyone is making fun of special needs kids, I’m going to be one of the first to jump in his excrement, but this isn’t some helpless kid.

So what, professionals’ disabilities are fair game? What if he had studdered – would it have been ok to make fun of him? What if he’d been in a wheelchair?

It doesn’t matter who the target is – making fun of disabilities is extremely crass and offensive. It’s astonishing to me that people think Trump is a credible candidate. What if he actually got elected? How many diplomatic incidents would he spark with comments such as this? What if he pulled this sort of stunt with another world leader? It would be a disaster.

Making fun of someone’s hairstyle is one thing, if you mean that; mocking someone’s congenital condition is quite different and rather grave.

Fortunately, for him he can change his appearance, i.e. get a good hairdresser, change clothes, whatever part of his appearance is made fun off. All I’ve ever seen, is his quiff of hair been blown in the wind and pictures taken - a good hairdresser then

The disabled man, unfortunately, cannot change his physical afflictions.

If he is the best the GOPniks can find, we deserve Hillary.

Any of us could become disabled. Would we appreciate our bodily struggles being thought of as funny?

Personal habits or appearance foibles are different: everybody has them. And getting burnt on is part of the game for politicians.

Well, is that a word in the U.S. - “GOPniks”?! Is that related to a Russian word “gopnik”, which means a “bully”, a “street-thug”?

I think this is your real problem, you don’t like Trump and you don’t like his supporters. You’ll find fault with anything he does. A lot of why Trump is resonating with his supporters is because they’re tired of feigned outrage and enforced sensitivity. People are tired of being labeled racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, climate change denier, etc., etc. and are attracted to Trump because he doesn’t buy into this nonsense or at least doesn’t appear to. He’s the only candidate out there that doesn’t act like he’s embarrassed to be pro-American.

👍

And a lot of common sense and the media, most are clearly not friends and many have that same anti-many-Americans attitude, so Trump goes more after the media.

This guy is supposedly ahead in the polls? I smell BS. I don’t believe it for one minute. I think it’s some kind of sabotage.

It doesn’t matter, making fun of anyone’s disability is unacceptable in my book. God Bless, Memaw
