Don't Expect a Political Realignment

Voters wonder why our involvement has gone on so long in Iraq, with continuing casualties. They wonder why more aid did not get to New Orleans faster. You may argue, as I do, that those perceptions are unfair, that Clinton benefited because we were on holiday from history and Bush suffers because of the threats Sept. 11 revealed. But they are what they are.

And what are the new ideas that Democrats are campaigning on? They’ve had a hard time coming up with a list. At the top, usually, is raising the minimum wage. That’s a law that Congress first passed in 1938. Liberal think tankers will tell you that if you want progressive redistribution of income, the minimum wage is a far weaker tool than the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Bill Clinton and the Democratic Congress did expand the EITC in the 1990s, with a small but perceptible redistributive effect – one of their policy successes. Democrats today could campaign on expanding it further. But the minimum wage tests better in polls.

The Democratic plea is that the Republicans should be punished for incompetence. But even with majorities in both houses of Congress, Democrats will be poorly positioned to offer competence itself. You can make a good case that the Republicans have run out of ideas – they’ve implemented most of Bush’s 2000 platform (tax cuts, education accountability, Medicare changes, more defense spending) and have conclusively failed to implement others (Social Security individual accounts). But Democrats don’t have much in the way of ideas to advance in their place.

The Dems will aggressively see to broaden and promote Abortion Rights, undo current restrictions on Abortion (the few that there are), seek huge federal funding for abortion, will push to force university medical schools to FORCE those studying to be doctors or surgeons to learn how to perform abortions without any religious exception clause. The Dems will aggressively seek to pass new “Hate Speech” laws which, like those in Canada, criminalize any criticism of the Homosexual lifestyle, with few if any exceptions for religious institutions.

The Dems will aggressively seek to pass laws granting full Federal Funding for embryonic stem cell research, despite the fact that this is immoral, and despite the fact that adult stem cells work BETTER in all tests conducted so far.

The Dems will increase the already-large Federal funding of
Planned Parenthood, the nation’s biggest abortion-provider.

The Dems (if their rhetoric is to be believed) will pull our troops out of Iraq (where we never should have gone in the first place), allowing the radical Al-Qaeda insurgents and other Islamic fanatics to either take the country into fullscale civil war, or seize power and set up a terrorist state far worse than the Hussein regime.

The Dems will raise taxes through the roof, mostly on corporations, the upper middle class, and the rich.
Just remember: When your company starts paying much higher taxes, they also STOP giving YOU good salary increases.

Oh, and yes, the Dems will raise the minimum wage (not a bad thing in itself at all).

And some of the Dems will try to impeach Bush.

So yes, the Democrats do have ideas. Unfortunately for me, 90% of their ideas are contrary to my Catholic Faith and are wicked crimes against God and humanity.

If Bush continues with his signing statements the way he has been, he will be impeached.

he issued one a few weeks ago where Congress said only person X can alter or edit reports headed to Congress from the Executive. Bush issued a signing statement saying that he is alowed to edit the reports “by the unitary executive theory”.

that is by no means faithfully executing the Laws. He is brushing with the American Bar association and the ACLU, most lawyers from which make his Counsels look like morons.

Read the transcripts from some Supreme Court and Appeals court hearings. White house lawyers read the same rhetoric over and over and over again. Bush had really better be careful. The courts are tiring of his violation of the Separation of Powers.

The Dems will do good things too - many want to restrict off-shoring which is destroying the US computer and engineering fields. If you have kids going for those things you should be concerned/ They will work for broader health care covertage - a woman in her 80s I know is going blind cause the insuranve won’t pay for 2,000 bottle eyes drops. The pharmacy industry needs to be regulated. Lots of positive things.

The GOP are every bit as secular as the Dems - if you don’t see that by now I am surprised. its why the Dems will win back the House and likely the Senate.

The Republicans believe in sharing power, which they have done, with the Democrats.

The Democrats have never done that.

So… if the Democrats retake Congress, you could expect, for example, Charlie Rangel ( D. - New York) to head up the House Ways and Means Committee. (He’s now the ranking Democrat.)

So, he woud block any effort to make President Bush’s tax cuts permanent. That would exact tax increases by default because all of Bush’s tax cuts are scheduled to expire by 2010.

In September, Rangel told the Bloomberg news service that he “cannot think of one” Bush tax cut that merits renewal.

Rangel voted against the 2001 Bush Income Tax Cuts, against the Bush Income tax cuts in 2006, against eliminating the death tax, against eliminating the marriage penalty, against the one-percent across-the-board tax cut, against the health care tax credit for the self-employed, against the balanced budget amendment.

Rangel also voted against the Defense of Marriage Act, against Protection of Prayer on Public Property, against the ban on Partial Birth Abortion, against English as the National Language, against National Missile Defense, and against the 700-mile fence on the U.S. -Mexican border.

There’s something that he couldn’t do anything about. They probably WILL impeach him if they take the House but he won’t be removed from office, because the Senate wouldn’t convict him (remember, that pesky 2/3 majority thing).

I think Bush probably deserves impeachment far more than Clinton did. As I see it (God forgive me if I’m wrong), Clinton was/is a scamp and a rascal, while Bush is a well-meaning person. Unfortunately the amount of harm you do is not necessarily related to your personal character. Clinton’s sins only tangentially affected his running of the country. Bush has been trampling the Constitution into the ground.
