That proves my point as to why I’m concerned. Christ established His Church, one Church. There are not multiple governors or “takes” on His kingdom. Truth is not relative nor is theology. God cannot be all things to all people or different realities for Calvin, Luther, Zwingli, Knox, Wesley, Cranmer, and company. These illustrations only further my confidence that I’ve done the right thing being a Roman Catholic.
Out of curiosity, what is it that you find superior about the Vatican claim to being the one Church over the Orthodox or Coptic claim? (not trying to distract or debate - I won’t comment on whatever you say, I’m just curious)

That would be an interesting experience. I never have met another Protestant who believed they were saved and could therefore live however they pleased. I doubt you’ll find many of them in church on Sunday morning.

Out of curiosity, Jimmy B., do you know someone like this? If there’s someone at work or in your neighborhood who lives a thoroughly immoral lifestyle and claims they’re fine because “once saved, always saved” then I can see why you keep bringing it up.
Is it just me or is it odd that there hasn’t been a response to this question yet?

It’s Jimmy B; 🤷 I’ve seen him come back and reply months after abandoning comment on his own thread. Maybe about April I’ll hear about a rotten neighbor of his who shoves those horrible Chick tracts under his door and then goes back to his day job dealing crack. I won’t reply, because I’ll be dealing with a new baby… 😃

Complain, sure. Compare all of us to that dude? Unneccessary.

Sure, but if that’s the main Protestant contact he has on a day-to-day basis (kicking the new pile of tracts aside as he walks out the door to his car every morning) and that guy claims OSAS, I can see why it would be a bee in Jimmy B’s bonnet. (Of course, this is still a hypothetical neighbor, you understand, I don’t know what Jimmy B’s Protestant contacts might be like.)

I’ve known Catholics at work whose attitude toward Catholic teachings would curl my wife’s hair. The difference is, I guess, that I grew up with an ecumenical mindset and didn’t mistake the practice of individual Catholics for their church’s teachings. There’s plenty to discuss and argue about without picking on the foibles of individual wackjobs. Or taking particular principles way out of context. Or mistaking conclusions for axioms. Or the various other ways Jimmy B sets up Protestant Straw Men.

Still, he’s got a real talent for eye-catching thread titles! 😃

Actually, Jimmy’s comment isn’t all that far-fetched of a comment. That’s why I found this forum…I never heard of such a thing…but …just last night, I had a discussion with a Baptist friend and she was saying that the ten commandments are “Old Testament” & not necessary any more and that those who are truly saved (born again-OSAS) have spirits that don’t sin.

She said that the enemy wants us to believe we are sinners and not saints.

My Catholic faith did not waver…but it was hard keeping up with her flipping from book to book and passage to passage (she knows her scripture)

I’ve seen that flippy thing, and I’ll betcha she’s memorized a ton of individual verses rather than reading the whole thing multiple times. It’s tough to escape the idea that Christians continue to sin when you read the whole thing. That’s pretty much the core of every epistle: “here’s how you’re messing up, and you need to fix it in these ways.”

If you want to challenge her, just make her stop and read the entire chapter around each verse. Say “you have to read it in context,” even if you’re totally clueless what the context is. Once you hear the whole context, I’ll bet you’ll be able to think of some alternative ways to view the passage (they may not all be Catholic ways, but hey the Orthodox have been doing this a while too).

Don’t worry about it. She’ll grow up. The flippy thing is a sign of immaturity. When you meet someone who can quote the entire chapter without even looking at it, then you can start getting intimidated. (My great grandmother used to tear a page out of an old Bible and read it while she did the ironing. She had huge amounts of Scripture memorized. When the cults would come to the door and quote Scripture to her, she’d say “You’re quoting out of context” and proceed to recite the entire chapter. She enjoyed the looks on their faces.)

, I never have met another Protestant who believed they were saved and could therefore live however they pleased. ,…
Actually I have 😦 They’re out there pal, trust me. I even remember a short-wave broadcast not long ago (about a month) that started off something like “Since there is nothing we can possibly do to lose our salvation after we are saved, why should we bother to act differently? Well we sure don’t have to, but by changing our habits we can draw others to Christ. More on how to do this after the break.” It was one of those shows from WWCR Nashville or the station in Obachobie (sp), FL I can’t remember which. I thought the whole thing too stupid & switched to Radio Tipei.

What? Where do you get the notion that we don’t believe in these things? Do you pull this out of thin air? Are you trying to find a way to make protestants look bad as usual? It’s insulting to insinuate that we who believe in grace alone think we do not have a responsibilty to follow God’s commandments. Do you not care that you make up things that are out-right lies? These are generalizations meant to do nothing but cause arguements.

That sort of nonsense hurts Catholicism far more than Protestantism. I’m just very sorry you’ve been subjected to it 😦

Gottle of Geer,

Are you serious?

I have read many of your posts here, over the years, at least those that I can make any sense of…##…##…##…and you seem to me, to be more concerned about your own reputation and trying to convince others here, “how smart your are”, than you are concerned with defending, true Catholic doctrine.

You are also very condescending…is that a Christian trait?

Your posts here do more to confuse and hurt Catholics, in my opinion, than most of the Protestant posts here.

Any insult from you, I take as a compliment…so, thank you…

Give your ego a rest Gottle of Gear… You are much too serious.

Please stop insulting fellow Catholics.

Peace

"Don’t Follow the Commandments”

“Don’t Follow the Commandments”; “Don’t get married”; Don’t go to Church", "Don’t baptize your children and so on and so on…

If you believe that you are “Saved by Grace Alone” then none of the above applies to you…right?

This is especially true for those who are “Once Saved Always Saved” (OSAS)…right?

Your Thoughts?
This post reveals your ignorance of the sola gratia doctrine. Sola gratia doesn’t exclude these things but rather enables them. If you don’t believe that you are saved by grace alone than you are by defibition a Pelagian heretic and not a catholic.

And this coming from an Anglican…

I still think Jimmy was referring to “Faith Alone”, and not “Grace Alone”, which I understand to be an accepted Catholic belief. What say you, Jimmy?

Well, I wouldn’t want to judge the sophistication of someone’s theology from a radio soundbite. I have heard statements like that in conversation. So far, when challenged, those people have always had a much more nuanced view than the soundbite would indicate.

I don’t blame you for switching stations. Ugh. About two years ago my wife convinced me to fast for Lent - we decided to fast from our addiction to news on the web and radio. We’ve never gone back. Every time we tune in now, we can only last about ten minutes. It’s all so incredibly dumb. I’ve heard TV is a lot tougher to break away from. We decided before we got married not to have a TV, so we’ve had even less exposure to that medium of idiocy. Of course, every time I start feeling virtuous about it, I remember I still go online too much…

Right on. And I am sorry catholics have to deal with the same kind of stuff from other protestants.

By the way, did Jimmy call YOU condescending? Did he accuse YOU of having an ego? I’m hoping I read that wrong.

And this coming from an Anglican…
Roll your eyes all you want but it is you who doesn’t even know the teaching of your own church which teaches that christians are saved by grace alone. So before you create straw men to mock the faith of others perhaps you should read up on what your own church teaches first 👍

Jimmy seems to hold a serious grudge against anyone who is not Catholic.
I don’t know if he was hurt by a protestant movement, or if his conviction for Catholicism is so intense that he feels like he has to post these seriously aggressive threads, but, truly, it hurts the Catholic movement.
It shows no respect for anyone with views differing from his own, excludes any form of ecumenism and shows an almost first, glance jugementalist attitude that really puts Catholics in a bad light.

I don’t care for trollish remarks like these threads seem to imply. I say threads because I see a lot of these type of threads posted by him.

Jimmy, why are you so angry? This is truly not the way to convert people.
You chase them away and you turn them from you. You leave a bitter taste in their mouths that they carry with them the next time they encounter a Catholic.

Far better results can be achieved in a different approach.

Isn’t this nice?:hug3:

I was so moved by these last two posts… I posted a music video, enjoy 😃 -

“I’ve got you babe”

Great, so…if you understand and agree with Catholicism then why aren’t you a Catholic?

.
Why do you say that I’m “angry”?

Is It because I disagree with you and a few others here, or is it because, I will defend myself and my faith?

What makes you believe that I’m here to convert anyone?

Is that why you are here, to try to pull Catholics away from their faith?

I don’t post on non-Catholic sites.

If you go back and look at my threads, you will see that I am rarley the top poster on any of my threads. I simply ask questions and start conversations…Generally the more I am attacked, personally, the more I post, otherwise, I try to stay on topic and limit my imput.
