Not having read more than a few of the pages of this thread I come away with a few thoughts.
There isn’t to much Rock / Hard Rock / Heavy Metal I would have playing in my house when my pastor comes over.
Does that make all the music bad? Probably not. Is there a percentage of it that is bad? Probably. I personally find that I am a more joyful person if I am not listening to Rock / Hard Rock / Heavy Metal. There seems to be an inherant aggresion and definite hedonism to a lot of the music I chose to listen to as a teen. Sad, but true. There is not alot of rock/metal that is worth listening to. However, if you find some, such as Skillet, Kutless, Thousandfootcrutch, or Decipher Down, you’ve found a gem. The lyrics, I believe, have an affect on the listener whether he / she wants it to or not. Absolutely. That’s one reason why I don’t like it when people condemn a certain type of music. It’s not the music that makes it bad. It’s the lyrics.Ozzy Osbournes “Suicide Solution” didn’t cause me to want to kill myself, with liquor or any other “weapon” but I also can’t say it wouldn’t have that affect on another person. In the Act of Contrition we say that we will avoid occasions for sin. While listening to a song may not be sinful, in itself. It may dispose someone to sin. Unfortunately.
My other thought is this. It is disconcerting to me to see the number of uncharitable posts in this thread. The OP expressed his opinion and the number of attacks on his opinion seemed to out number the well thought responses. Are we that unable to withstand someone voicing opposition to something we hold dear? As Christians, if we have that kind of negative response to an opinion about something such as the music we like, shouldn’t we consider whether that music has become an idol? Just some thoughts.Preach it brother!
