I agree with her that it’s odd that blacks can use the word, but not whites. I guess the controversy proves her point.

Regardless of who uses it, it’s still a disgusting word that really shouldn’t be mentioned in public.

I have nothing against Dr. Laura, and I probably agree with her more than I disagree.

Doesn’t matter though-wrong is wrong.

She shouldn’t have said that, but she has a valid point about the other stuff. You should hear how black people talk to each other, and about white people, when they’re not around. It’s pure hypocrisy. I have to get up and leave the room sometimes, because it ticks me off.

Signed,
A black woman married to a white man, who is tired of that mess.

Excuse me, but she wasn’t calling anyone the “N” word, she was sighting an example of people on different programs that use the word to each other even affectionately. (One black man to another) So what, using this word as an example of how others use it is being RACIST??? Please!! I agree with her that people are hyper sensitive and call comments racist when there is NO RACISM involved. Almost like they’re looking for trouble. Too many people have bought in to the politics of racism, having been swayed by political hacks trying to drive a wedge in society. Common people, think on YOUR OWN 2 feet, don’t buy into the ridiculous hypersensitivity of those that ***have ***bought it. Call it racism when it actually IS RACISM!! There is plenty of actual racism around, we don’t need to fabricate it.

I dated a black girl for years (we’re still very close) and I never heard anyone in her family say that.

God help you if I was around and you said that in front of her…I’d do something…well, quite ungentlemanly.

…Where do they find these guys. . .
I could be wrong, but I think Dr. Laura is a woman…

Poor taste. Whether she was using it as an example or not, it shouldn’t be used in civil discourse.

Oh, then you were lucky. Or they were self-censoring in front of you. They say it doesn’t really count, because they’ve substituted the “er” for an “a”, which is a totally different word. And they say it on the radio all the time.

My family doesn’t say that, but I know plenty of others who do. It’s very common. What my family does is rag on white people, and speak about white people as if they are all interchangeable, or a collective.

White people do this… White people do that… All white people want… We can’t let the white people…

They act like white people are a political party, or something. And then they hold up a hand to my husband and say something trite like, “Present company excluded, of course. We know you’re down.” Nice. I’m sure the disclaimer makes it all okay.

Oh, then you were lucky. Or they were self-censoring in front of you.:
Maybe. Obviously I can’t read their minds. I hung out with them all the time, and I still do~I can say I’ve never, ever heard any of her brothers, sisters, cousins, any of them use it.

Have they used other words that are questionable? No comment, but let’s just say some of them are Yankee fans and some of them are Red Sox fans.

You decide for yourself if there has ever been other “naughty words” said.

I’m not saying it’s a good thing to say things like that.

I’m just saying that if they are so upset by being called names and treated like a faceless-collective, then maybe they should be leading by example.

Although interacial marriage is starting to make it difficult for even black people to talk like that.

Catholic German, I agree with you 100 percent!! Your way of thinking and my way of thinking are exactly alike. (Oh wait, how can this be???, your black, and I’m white !!! I too agree that I’ve had it to here with all this garbage. Why do they try to divide us all the time? Grouping people by the color of their skin is wrong, no matter who is doing it. Seems odd when any group that has had it done to them and knows how it feels, then turns around and does the same darn thing. I think that sometimes people never got out of grammer school in their minds and it shows. We are all just people, trying to live our lives the best we can. This has nothing to do with Dr. Laura I know, but it just felt good to say it!

I actually heard most of that conversation on WJR in Detroit several nights ago. Dr. Laura was wrong, but who can blame anyone for throwing up one's hands at this point? I used to listen to her often when she was broadcast in the Scranton area, and I heard her state MANY times that one should never tolerate these epithets, and should go as far as disassociating from those who use them.
Yet, I have heard so many black folks greet each other with "Hey *****'" or "*****" that I'm thoroughly disgusted. One has to wonder whether some actually BELIEVE that they are not worthy of respect and dignity, and that they really ARE inferior! Well, the black friends that I have, and the ones in the limelight that I pay attention to are most definitely NOT second class in any way, and they command respect. Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, Bill Cosby, Lynn Swann, Walter Williams, Star Parker, etc. are my brothers and sisters in every way!! :)

At any rate, although I agree with some of what Dr. Laura was saying, what she was saying had little to do with the caller. I agree that someone who is very sensitive about race should probably avoid being in an interracial relationship, because the topic becomes unavoidable. Unfortunately.

But if people are ragging on you, right in front of your husband, and he doesn’t say anything and just let’s them get away with it… then he’s no-account. You just don’t let people talk like that in front of your spouse. It’s totally disrespectful, and that isn’t really a race-specific issue.

I have friends of mine say to me “nigger please “now I can’t say it back I’ll get my butt kicked. The bro’s I hang with say it to each other all the time it don’t mean nothing it’s not done in a hatful way.

If it’s between friends I don’t have a problem with it.

Just like I seen white people get upset when a black guy calls another black guy brother or bro—again it don’t mean nothing it’s the same if I go up to someone and say, “Hey man.”

Of course we’re a bunch of active/retired army guys. 😛

Yeah, but it’s so juvenile. It’s one thing if guys are talking like that to each other, and we know that y’all are clowning around when you are “amongst yourselves”. But they were talking smack to the caller, right in front of her husband. That’s something different. You can’t let people talk smack to your wife. Otherwise you end up looking like a bigger fool than even she does, and totally lose her respect.

And a man with half a brain will be wary of anyone getting “overly familiar” with his wife, anyway. She sounds quite young and classy on the phone, and I bet she’s good looking, too. These guys might be teasing her to get her attention, and put themselves “above her”. That’s not a good place for them to be. She should be once-removed from them, so they should have to watch what they say directly to her.

If you listen to what she specifically says, these guys aren’t making random racist comments. All of the comments are directed specifically to her. But if they’re friends with her husband, and come over to his house, then they probably aren’t very racist. So… what’s with the comments? Easy, she’s hot and they’ve figured out that this is a good way to push her buttons. If she got upset about being called “fat”, they’d be teasing her about that instead.

Naw… I think her husband is pretty naive. Now she’s obsessing over these guys. Enough to call into a radio show to complain. She probably thinks about them all of the time, and is wondering why her husband is such a schmuck.

When I lived in Germany, German guys would “talk smack” about my being American, and then come on to me. It’s like in kindergarten, but it works surprisingly well. It’s a good way to keep a woman talking and make a lasting impression. It’s better to be a jerk than to be ignored.

I was just replying to what some people posted I didn’t listen to Dr. Laura or the caller.

I was just talking about the guys I hang with. Now if I’m with a group of just white people and racial jokes start coming out or the N-word I’ll stop them and say, “Hey I don’t play that.”

One I’m not married to a white woman and have had that racial garbage done to us.

Two I’ve had men non-white literally save my life and I theirs—I will not put up with racism at all.

What’s weird is that I’m half Polish and love American Polish jokes. :o

I guess I’ll listen to that call.

Yeah, listen to the call. It’s not really a racial issue. Dr. Laura just turned it into one and went off on a rant.

Hard to imagine she’d ever go off on a rant.😃

I used to enjoy listening to her when her show was more successful, but I haven’t stumbled upon it in recent years.

This reminds me of how some of the southern white women teachers I had in high school used to pronounce “negro”. They pronounced it “niggra”.

And yes, they pronounced it like that out of pure meanness.

Really being born and raised in Michigan I could never imagine a teacher saying that!
