…What? This post is a non sequitur if I ever saw one. :confused:
Far from it

World events are very closely related to happenings in the Church. Just see how in history Our God chooses saints at specific times. It all has meaning and is relational.

We must remember that the only guarantee the Church has is that, in matters pertaining to morals and to the Catholic faith, whatever has been the universal teaching through the ages is not in error and that the Church, with a valid successor to Peter, won’t teach error when proclaiming something as an infallible doctrine. So it behooves Catholics to know what the Church has taught for the past 2,000 years regarding faith and morals and when the Church is or is not proclaiming something as infallible.

You may see it, but I don’t see any relation between ISIS and the Synod. If you’re saying the Church is moving into apostasy while ISIS licks their chops for world domination, I find that hard to believe. God, in His goodness, would not let the pooch get THAT screwed!

God let Israel and the temple get wiped out by infidels time and again. :rolleyes:

The polygamy snyod? 😃
Perhaps that synod with give us something like “polygamists have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community.” We will be welcoming.
This would apply equally to polygamists. I’m assuming you were joking but it sounds like you and the above poster were comparing homosexuals to polygamists. That would be quite an insult to them; one which they definitely don’t deserve.

homosexual=/=polygamist
homosexual=/=pedophile
homosexual=/=horrible human being

lakotak, I empathize. What is happening here is a rather unsettling statement by churchmen that is not a definitive pronouncement by the Church herself. Only the latter has the guidance of the Holy Spirit such as to make it unquestionable.

The ordinary pronouncements of churchmen should be heeded and respected, since the hierarchy has the Godgiven vocation of teaching and upholding the Faith. ‘Heeded and respected’ means just that - we must as Catholics accept it, even if we don’t like it, unless, and only unless, it clearly undermines the Faith it is supposed to promote.

This document, well…let’s see how long it lasts in the hands of a Muller or a Burke. Certainly Cardinals like them will not be able to remain silent about it. I don’t think, on reflection, that it will last very long in its present form. If it does, batten down the hatches, for Arius is in town, and he has the whole weight of secular society behind him!
You know, even the very thought of this being brought up in this manner, if it is not a translation error, gives the impression that God is contradicting Himself. On the one hand, He destroyed because of these practices, now they are giving the impression that God has now changed His mind about homosexuality in the 21st century. I am surprised at the bishops, etc. who have not thought that this statement, if correct, would put God in a whole new light. What is there to value in this orientation, if God, saw it abhorrent enough to destroy two cities because of it. I hope this is just a translation error and not something that will take shape for doctrine, etc.

A major shift in the Church’s pastoral care for gay Catholics was put forward today at the Vatican’s Synod on the Family on Monday.

A document released at the halfway point of the gathering said that gay Catholics’ orientation should be valued and that they have “gifts and qualities” to offer parishes. The document also praised elements of same-sex partnerships.

“Are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing them fraternal space in our communities? Often they wish to encounter a Church that offers them a welcoming home,” the document, presented this morning by Cardinal Peter Erdo, the relator general of the synod, stated. “Are our communities capable of providing that, accepting and valuing their sexual orientation, without compromising Catholic doctrine on family and matrimony?”

It goes on to explain that while there are “moral problems” with homosexual unions, “there are cases in which mutual aid to the point of sacrifice constitutes a precious support in the life of the partners”.

The text also calls for the Church to recognise the “seeds of the Word that have spread beyond its visible and sacramental boundaries” to cohabiting couples, civil marriages and to Catholics who are divorced and remarried.

It adds that civil marriages and cohabiting relationships that have stability and deep affection and the responsibility of children, should be seen as “a germ to be accompanied in development towards the sacrament of marriage”.

This point reflects the law of graduality – the notion that an individual can come to the fullness of church teaching over the course of their lives – which has emerged as a theme at the synod.

This report troubles me greatly. We should be charitable to sinners, as we’re all sinners, but we should still condemn the sin. This document adds a lot of ambiguity and does not call homosexuality for what it is - a grave sin.

Keep in mind that we’ve yet to hear fully from all of the bishops. They haven’t voted on anything and they haven’t had a chance to speak out to the laity. Maybe there are some saints out there after all. There could more turns and twists ahead than you would ever imagine. I wonder what Thomas More is thinking right now? A LOT of the Church doctrine and tradition is soon to be obsolete, if not now, in the near future.

i have been following this thread and the following thought came to me regarding the confusion on gay Catholics’ orientation should be valued .

If this is an accurate interpretation of what is really intended then would it not lend to the idea that if the Holy Spirit is guiding the matters and preserves the Church from error and God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for their homosexual practices then God has changed His mind, therefore, God is changeable, when He is supposed to not be? This is only a layman’s thought, but I find it disturbing to me.

Maybe someone can give some insight on this as this is certainly not an area of expertise for me.

Thanks,
If that actually is an accurate transalation, my guess would be that it means we should value the whole person, even the flawed parts of them. Doesn’t seem like a very new teaching to me.

Gilliam, it’s not difficult to see. I knew a homosexual (not one myself BTW ;)). He came to our parish, regularly. He discussed his problem with me (he had the grace to know it was a problem - ‘valuing’, tosh!).** It never crossed his mind to bring his current partner with him to church, just like an alcoholic doesn’t bring a bottle of plonk and swig it back during Mass.**

The parish is - or should be - a Catholic space. Where we believe the same things and agree on the same Commandments. If we are imperfect and fail to keep them, that’s OK. **But we do nothing that in any way adds up to an *endorsement ***of sin. My friend was not endorsing sin when he came to church. His homosexuality was not a public fact. **But two homosexuals who come to church together ***are *****endorsing sin. A single visit, in ignorance, OK. We show a little understanding. But regular attendance, no.

We do as Christ did. Deal with public sinners on neutral ground, and let them visit our churches in a manner which makes clear they are not shoving their lifestyle in our faces.
What about the heterosexual couple who are known to be in an invalid marriage? Should they refrain from coming together? How about, like, almost every couple in the pews? Polls show that most Catholics use artificial birth control. Should they not go to Mass?

Which bishops or cardinals wrote this travesty? Kaspar probably helped draft this.

Really, I don’t see anything new in this statement. It talks about how we should respect and welcome people despite their flaws. That’s it. Nothing about how homosexual acts, contraception, etc. are no longer sinful. Nothing about changing doctrine. Nothing in this statement goes against true Catholic teaching and practice has been for 2,000 years.

These are more or less a group of baby boomers, largely of European extraction (directly or indirectly), liberal persuasion, appointed by Pope Francis who is the same. The same thinking you see influencing our Western culture in many, many other ways. Sorry, it’s many things, but new is not one of them.

When it includes words of “accepting and valuing their sexual orientation”, that is apostasy.

But remember that the Pope is protected by the Holy Spirit from teaching in error in regards to faith and morals.
Ya but he can’t teach anything that goes against previous teaching. He can’t teach against existing Church doctrine. If he did then he would cease to be pope.

No chance, but as I follow the synod, I can’t help thinking about the Arian crisis. That particular episode started with a fairly harmonious council (Nicaea) and ended in a episcopal free-for-all that lasted over half a century. The trouble then, as now, was the secular world. The Church had come to terms with the political system in the person of Constantine and found herself inundated with a mass of converts who were following the wind’s new direction and had only a superficial understanding of what it meant to be Catholic. A pagan-Catholic doctrinal compromise - Arianism - found support in Constantine’s son, Constantius, and the game was on, led by pro-Arian bishops like Eusebius of Nicomedia (who baptized Constantine on his deathbed).

Catholicism today is under a similar pressure: many Catholics who have a superficial understanding of what it means to be Catholic, a Church who has come to terms with secular society, and now pressure on the Church to find a doctrinal compromise which is neatly achieved by leaving doctrine in the theology books and taking a caring, *pragmatic *approach to sinners who have no intention of renouncing their sin.

Result: chaos.
