Yes and yes. Though the dress code is unwritten and unannounced, it is there, and it should be.

An example to make the why more obvious. You’re going to meet the queen of England—ignoring that she is de facto the head of a heretical and schismatic “Church.” What do you wear? Something nice, respectful of just whom you are meeting.

Now think to yourself you are meeting the King of all creation. What do you wear? The best you can actually manage.
I would wear an evening gown to meet the queen. Which would be highly inappropriate to wear to Mass.

My best would probably look something like this:

That would be far too ostentatious to wear to Mass.

Here’s the dress code at my church:

FOR MEN - A shirt and tie, with either suit coat, jacket or sweater, and dress shoes on Sundays and holy days of obligation. No earrings.

FOR LADIES - A dress or skirt is required; no pants. The skirt must at least cover the knee, and should not be tight or otherwise revealing in any way. Immodest slits are forbidden. Clothing should be loose and not form-fitting. A head covering is also required. See-through blouses are forbidden, as well as clothing which is low-cut.

FOR EVERYONE - No tennis shoes, sandals or denim to include weekdays. The standards of Catholic modesty must be observed.
I would point out my post upthread - what would they say to those of us who came straight to Mass in our work clothes? Surely my cargo pants and polo shirt didn’t meet the dress code. (And there is no way I would be cleaning bathrooms or working with floor stripper in a long skirt.)

The idea was the quality of your dress lol, not the exact genre

You would wear an evening gown even if it were a morning or daytime event? Why? You do realize that there are formal daytime clothes that aren’t evening formalwear?

See also this if you don’t know what is appropriate daytime formal clothing:

I’m intrigued…where are you at?

I know people at my wife’s church who don’t own some of that clothing (myself included)…then what? We just wouldn’t be able to attend your parish and would need to go find another one…? Interesting.

Edit: Who came up with such a dress code? Do you have like a velvet rope and ushers making sure people meet the dress code before entering?

No. People come in dressed as they like but I haven’t seen anyone wearing outrageous miniskirts or shorts. I have seen however people coming in with workout equipment (girl), very tight, and nobody said anything. And there was this one guy who was wearing jeans so tight he was standing out in a negative way on the men’s side.
But at my parish people come in and out of the church for the whole duration of 3 hrs of Liturgy. It’s very popular and very small for the amount of people who want to come in it especially at Major Feasts.
People who come in dressed shiny usually just come in to pay God respect at the end of the Liturgy, light candles and leave. People who stay for more don’t wear anything outrageous enough to be noticed. There is a lot of black, white, brown, gray, basic colors for the most part. And most women cover their heads.

Whose “standards of Catholic modesty”?
Certainly not mine.
I can’t think of the last time I wore a dress to Mass. And I wear jeans to work. Are you saying if I wanted to attend daily Mass at your parish, I would be turned away because of my denim? And would my ball cap or tie-dye bandana be considered appropriate headcovering?

Yes, I do not own some of the clothes required to attend mass there.

Also…I wouldn’t be one to wear a suit coat, jacket or sweater in the middle of summer.

According to Musicam Sacram or Sacram Musicam, if the choir is in the sanctuary, there should be no women in that choir.
What is the reason why women aren’t allowed in the sanctuary?

Do women by their very presence defile the sanctuary?

If I am unwelcome and turned away from daily mass because I come in work clothes then I won’t attend mass.

I work in the railroad so I won’t be wearing a dress and girly shoes but jeans and work boots.

I do dress up Sundays for mass.

Well, to be fair, @Bataar, did say women could not wear pants at all, and that denim was not allowed either.
I do have a long denim jumper I wear with a t-shirt and my Birkenstocks. I’m pretty sure that would violate this dress code too. 😳
So sad that people think it is up to them who is worthy to attend Mass or not.

People need to focus more on mass and less on what people are wearing. If they are distracted by people, they need to follow along in a missal, or keep their eyes on the priest, or a crucifix.

???
You wouldn’t wear such a thing during the day. Evening gown is is in the evening. The daytime formal wear is what you would wear to meet the queen during the day. That’s the same thing one would wear to Church.

On the contrary. People may wear what they like. If darklight wants to wear that, she may.
