Given typical american society it’s not that a bad thing to rebel against.
Depends in what ways. As a rule, questioning traditional values, family values, whatever, that would be bad. So if clothing or hair styles are picked for the purpose of making some ill statements, then that’s bad because of the cause. Refusal to accept legitimate authority is also problematic. But being a rebel as a personality quirk not really.

I’m not “normal”, neither are most catholics I know.

If you want to talk about going against tradition values and family values, concitor this; In my writing group there are 12 kids. Out of those twelve kids not only am I the only catholic, I am the only one without step parents, step siblings, half siblings, or parents that have been divorced. How’s that for normal?

does your school have a dress code? do you think there should be a dress code? tell your oppinion!!🙂
8 years of Catholic grade school and 4 years of Catholic High school…

i LOVED having a uniform. especially at the all boys high school i went to… no girls to impress…no colors to match… shirt and tie and blazer with dress pants… SO EASY!
(i rarely showered in the morning… got up in the AM, threw on the same outfit i had yesterday, maybe ran a comb through my hair and off i went)
i am 100% strongly for uniforms for kids. it teaches discipline and makes their lives easier.

i’m also completely for single sex schools… much better learning environment and less distractions than co-ed schools.

15 year olds shouldn’t be primping for math class… they should be studying and learning.

nothing at all is wrong with it. the more kids deface themselves and their ‘look’… the easier it’ll be for my kid to get the high paying job while the alternative crowd is busy sedating and expressing themselves.

When i was in art school, i loved the ‘artistic’ types who had no business sense and were in love with the concept of being different… they weren’t and still aren’t competition in the business food chain.

how many 25 year old do you know with that alternative look? 35 year olds?

there is a reason people outgrow it. with age, somethines, you get wisdom.

The is prehaps the most ignorent thing I’ve ever read. Not so much that in order to get a job one needs to take on a look that is presentable, that is common sence, but that an alternative look is always all about sedating and “being different” and eventually dies out.

An alternative look goes deeper for many people, it called sub culture. And one does not simply abanded something so meaning full. Within my sub culture, clothes can play little part in our lives. We can look professional and still maintain our identities. Because they are our identies. I really hate to tell you this, but just because your child didn’t dye his/her hair purple at one point and have odd piercings doesn’t mean he/she won’t have strong compition.

look, i understand your aversion to my post, it’s to be expected. but to call it ignorant, well, it’s simply the truth.

i state quite strongly after having worked in new york and philadelphia for years… if you look alternative, you will not make the same salary as a ‘clean cut’ worker in most business dealings.

it’s called an ‘alternative’ culture because it is DIFFERENT than the norm.
and in the process of wanting to be different, the alternative bunch flocks to the ‘alternative’… that makes them sheep, in their own way.

so in detaching from the mainstream and following the ‘alternatives’, you become a predictable rebel.

easily contained and labeled. in searching for difference, you find similarities.

kinda ironic in a way.

Not all of us want to be in the “business food chain”. I’m not exactly what one would call “alternative”- hair and nails are of normal color and length, no tattoos or odd piercings- but I appreciate that I work in a field (biomedical science) where I can go to my job in jeans or shorts, a T-shirt, and sandals and be taken seriously. Sure, if I have to go to a conference, business casual would be strongly recommended, but that’s about as far as it goes. I thank God every day that I love my field of work and that I don’t have to dress up in suits. I also thank God that I don’t have one of those high-paying business jobs that requires me to work 70+ hours a week on salary (read: no overtime pay), as many of my acquaintences are required to do.

I work in a business office, and can also dress very casually (thank goodness! I was in the NYC headquarters for ten years, and there, it was a suit every day. )

Now, how many visible tattoos, unusual piercings (or any piercings other than ears), or unusual makeup jobs will you see in my office? None!

(Incidentally, I don’t get overtime pay, but the upside of that is I can take a break whenever I want, I can leave in the middle of the day to run an errand, and can work from home when I want to. 😃 )

Sounds like a good deal to me. 🙂

Well, for one those kids aren’t responsible for the parents’ divorces or lack of marriage altogether. What’s wrong in having a step sibling or half-sibling or such, that would be our act or our fault? Nothing. 🙂

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying odd clothes or hair styles always or as a rule rebel against core values. Sure not. However, if they did, that would be wrong. Some people choose odd styles in clothing or hair in order to offend the average person’s sensibilities and challenge the society’s values. Some others choose to taunt the police or generally show disregard of authority. Again, political tastes are one thing and the party in power doesn’t suddenly become holy, but the offices of the state (rather than the holders specifically) ought to be respected, as should the agents of the law, the military… and all. It’s all in the motives. Express yourself? Fine. Annoy/taunt/disrespect others, not fine.
