I am not an avid watcher of the show, simply because of time constraints, although I have seen a few of the reruns more than once (the one with Willie trying to lose weight by doing yoga is really funny).

Anyway, I specifically watched a rerun last night, because I wanted to see 1) if Phil was edited out, and 2) to see if A&E placed some sort of disclaimer on the show. (Neither happened.)

I was, however, treated to a KMart commercial with guys in multi-colored boxers making suggestive movements to the tune of “Jingle Bells.” Apparently, that meets A&E’s high standards, and I should not voice my opinion about being offended by it.
That commercial is offensive and I change the channel whenever it comes on. Miley Cyrus and her twerking is the entertainer of the year, and Phil Robertson is suspended. I live in bizarro world.

If I may ask without being lynched: why would a gay person be offended if someone said gay behavior could morph into bestiality if a person’s sexuality is what it is, and if we should tolerate other sexual views, then why would they not just think people who like bestiality are just another strain of sexual preference? Could there be some subconscious tickle in their mind that tells them this is wrong? Could they articulate why outside of an emotional response?
Very good point. Evidently they get to be the judge of what is tolerable.

Abyssinia I am in my 60’s and grew up in South Carolina. In rural South Carolina. I remember the klan rallies on Saturday night, i remember the segregation of towns, buildings, schools et al. But I played with black kids, worked on farms with black men and women, and what was quoted was correct to a major degree. Were their injustices done? Absolutely. Was there racial hatred from some whites towards blacks? Yes there was. But as a whole, the images put forth by Hollywood and liberal instigators were greatly exaggerated. Most working class and lower working class blacks and whites were in the same boat, other than the Jim Crow laws. There is still animosity within some people against blacks, Jews and Catholics in the South, just as there is in the North, East and West. Heck, I have family in upstate New York that are much more hateful toward blacks than most southerners I grew up around. You see, one must understand that the South was complex, and not just paint everyone with a brush dipped in a lie concocted by some to disparage an entire region.
Oh, I also remember when the local Klan kids singled me and some friends out as Pope Luvin Mary Worshipers. So yes, there was some hate going on, but it was from a small segment of the population, and they were equal opportunity haters.

Have a Blessed Christmas Season.

Exactly. Moral relativism, the central dogma of leftist ideology, says that things are only evil if we say they are.
Very good point. Evidently they get to be the judge of what is tolerable.

I asked in a new combox if anyone could explain why GLAAD was so mad (btw, in opposition to their acronym ) if they thought homosexuality had indeed been compared to bestiality. So far I have zero responses to the question, but I did get a couple down votes…

Exactly, either GLADD and A&E are really confused about the English language and think Phil made a statement about causality (homosexual behaviors cause bestiality)

Or they think that Julie Andrews thought that whiskers on kittens were made out of bright copper kettles because she linked those as well 😛
GLAAD = Gay & Lesbian Association of Addicts to Drama

What happy self supporting black folks, next on MSNBC, Phil gives proof of his latent racism and white privledge. Here the dog whistles blowing. 😉
You are hearing dog whistles, Steve? Man. you libs are really straining to deflect people’s attention from REAL problems, such as the destruction of tens of millions of minority families since the onset of Great Society programs. This guy Phil worked side by side with many black folks during the 50’s. You and I did not. Rob

I don’t watch reality TV and could only stand a few minutes of “Duck Dynasty”, which I watched just to see what all the fuss was about. So, pardon my unfamilarity with this show.
What did the guy say that was so wrong? He is a Christian and he quoted the Bible.
I bolded your answer. Elitist secular progressive amoral hypocrites generally don’t like Christianity or the Bible.

I am guessing the suits at A&E can’t stand this family, but if they can make them some money, they’ll sacrifice whatever high-brow prejudices they have. See post 7 on page one of this topic for an example of their likely feelings about Phil’s family.

A Protestant friend told me today they would much rather hear stuff about Pope Francis than Phil Robertson. She said so many talking heads in the Christian media just seem to blab where the Pope seems to just be sharing this unique authentic spirituality with the world in his actions and interactions with others. She said when she thinks about the Pope she wants to cry because he seems like such a beautiful soul. I’m myself am a Catholic convert and couldn’t agree with her more. It seems so many good Christians who live outside of the sacraments try hard but can’t move beyond rhetoric. They just don’t seem to “get” it. I don’t know why so many people I know are posting on social media that they stand behind Phil Robertson but choose to ignore all the great things are current pope is doing.

Not exactly a loss to American cultural life.
A loss to American free speech though. I might not like all the opinions that are expressed on TV or in magazines. But I agree that they have the right to be expressed. One would hope that liberals would see the irony here: they are always claiming to be for “free speech” and diversity. But they are the first ones to not tolerate others’ opinions. What hypocrites.

This is not about what really happened in the pre-civil rights south, or if homosexuality should be compared with bestiality. This is about free-speech, and whether certain views should be tolerated. What a long way we have come when merely speaking one’s Christian beliefs causes one to be fired. But that is where we are at now.

Camille Paglia compared the outcry to fascism:

"this is the level of punitive PC, utterly fascist, utterly Stalinist, OK, that my liberal colleagues in the Democratic Party and on college campuses have supported and promoted over the last several decades,” Paglia said. “This is the whole legacy of free speech 1960’s that have been lost by my own party.”

Thus, the gay mafia seems to be in control now. I believe it will get worse.

Glenn Beck has already announced that Duck Dynasty is welcome on his network, and he will NOT be intimidated by extremists on the left. 🙂 Rob

Regardless of what you think about Phil Robertson’s comments, GLAAD gave an award last year to Dan Savage. Dan Savage had said most disgusting things, so vile, that I won’t even post the comments here. He has made comments that are hateful and disgusting about various public figures, so how does GLAAD have credibility denouncing Phil Robertson’s comments when they gave an award to a person who has said so many hateful things?

That K Mart commercial is vile! I was watching with my younger sister and we both were completely disgusted by that vulgar display.

It’s amazing that homosexual activists, via their platform of “this is who I am”, are able to mobilize and change the marriage laws in this country, but someone else who simply answers a question about “who he is” and what he believes in, is suspended from his job. The hypocrisy couldn’t be more blatant.

Free the Duck man, little crude but hasn’t he been right along? He crossed the proverbial line?

People should once and for all reject political correctness as the fascist ideology that it is. It’s only job is to shut people up (mostly Christians) and we’ll end up with ‘hate speech’ laws like other countries have.
Absolutely. 👍

This is a manufactured outrage, a pure boat race (or “dog and pony show” if you want the American equivalent), and though I’ve never seen this show (I like ducks, though!), this is a crying shame.

I was just born in the 50’s so give me a break. Now read carefully, said the folks at MSMBC will complain about latent racism and white privilege, something they do often, in case you missed it, they were the ones who heard dog whistles all through the RNC last election cycle. As for me, I just enjoy the show. 🍿

I often object to Biblical references (such as how this duck man used them) because they are not qualified by other teachings that soften the blow or contradict the apparent message in some ways. Do all those people who engage in those sins he noted end up in hell? No. Is the sin or punishment of one sexual perpetrator the same for another who commits the same act? Again, no. So that is one reason we have to refrain from calling out a sin and its definitive consequences. Jesus gave us His Church to be the authority on these matters and also in the interpretation of Scripture. And I believe the Catholic Church, far and away, is non-judgmental on the sins of others. They do not shy away from calling something a sin, such as abortion, but they do not condemn souls. None. Even if some here may think Scripture is doing it (i.e. condemning souls), I do not. This why when asked about gays Pope Francis said “who am I to judge?”

The day this world realizes there surely is a purgatory they will shy away from the teaching or belief that we all either go directly to heaven or hell upon death. Some may, but it seems so likely the vast majority do not. Which ones? Do not ask me because we do not dare say. But I will say this – being gay is not a death sentence any more than is being an adulterer or a multitude of other transgressions. God will not put some forsaken soul into hell for being an alcoholic or junkie and a crook if he came from a family of alcoholics, junkies or crooks. What chance did he have in many cases of overcoming such a plight?

Here is the passage of Scripture the duck man must have been referencing: 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.”

First of all, “inherit the kingdom of God” does not mean absolutely never to inherit it. There may be a sentence before becoming purified. Scripture also says “nothing defiled shall inherit the kingdom.” Who among us who has accepted Christ as savior and then proceeded to engage in those acts mentioned dare call himself “undefiled?” Another passage says “God is not one to be mocked.” I refuse to accept definitive heaven or hell judgments upon death. Too many variables for mankind to make these kinds of judgments upon us all no matter what one’s circumstances were. Too many other passages suggest something otherwise. The duck dynasty guy implied too much, IMO.

The Robertson family has released a statement regarding the suspension. They are negotiating with A&E, and the family may discontinue the show.

We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E’s decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Phil would never incite or encourage hate.We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.
