Exactly… Sounds like a form of watered-down “prosperity Gospel”. As far as New Age, let’s call a spade a spade here. It should be called Old Age–simply regurgitated paganism.
Code:
But that would not be appealing…Old Age…New Age is enticing. The title seduces you to think of so many myriad things…etc…etc…gnosticism would not be palatable either. Anyway, Old Age is NEGATIVE…we have to get with it…be POSITIVE…

Have any of you heard of “the secret”? Honestly, I don’t know much about it yet, but it looks suspicious in a New Age kind of way. Oprah recently had 2 shows discussing “the secret”, & thousands of people are convinced it’s the answer to all of life’s problems.

From the little I have gathered so far, “teachers” of the secret reveal a truth that only an elite few know, people like Einstein & Newton knew it & benefited greatly. Sounds a little like gnosticism. They reveal that everything in life is energies. There seems to be a lot of psychobabble positive thinking kind of stuff, which is harmless enough. They go on to teach that the universe is the source of everything, & we must open ourselves up to the universe.

I guess there are a lot of things in the universe I don’t want to open myself up to. It seems like an occult practice, but I don’t know that much about it. I’m sorry, I still don’t know how to link to things, but people are talking about it at oprah.com & on a site called thesecrettv.com (I’m sorry, I’m not sure if that’s the exact site, but it looks like a cheesy mix of The DaVinci Code & Harry Potter). Tons of people are thinking this is their answer to health, wealth & happiness. Seems spiritually dangerous to me.
I think you are smart to be suspicious. I watched a little bit of both shows and saw NOTHING new at ALL; rather it was the same old “visualize what you want” stuff. It sounds suspiciously like that very first sin, doesn’t it?

I was immediately suspicious when those who are pushing it claim to have ‘learned it from reading ancient manuscripts’ but cannot tell you where and claim that only an ‘elite few’ have known, thereby appealing to the masses through a proven sales technique (have the make up of the stars! have the tennis shoes of the pro athletes!).

My experience has been that accepting my vocation in life, my purpose (to love and serve God and others) and to live my life within the parameters offered by the Holy Mother Church is the greatest ‘secret’ around…

Bella-

I don’t believe Oprah to the the “evil one” either, but all it takes for satan’s influence is someone with really good intentions and their eyes off of Jesus. This has seemed to be the case with Oprah for some time IMHO.
I do think Oprah does do some good and does help people some of the time, but that is what makes it all the more dangerous. It is much more difficult for the average person to sort the good from the bad. Our jobs aren’t to live “good” lives anyway, it is to live “holy” ones. I think in that capacity, Oprah, like so much “good” of secular society, fails miserably.

We must also remember that the devil kills with kindness than comes for the kill…(by that I do not mean that Oprah is the devil…just one of the devil’s tactics…)

I just watched an episode of Oprah’s “after the show”. I have no idea why I even bother with it. I used to watch Oprah all the time and then quit for a while and I noticed over the past 10 years she’s gone hog wild New Age.

Two things of concern for me: so many women take Oprah’s words or wisdom as if it is the answer they have been looking for. Like she is a god or something. That bugs me.

And as for this movie / book “The Secret” it sounds way too much like Buddhism or something of the Eastern religions, that I would stay a way from it. All these people might have hearts of gold and truly want to help people live happier lives, but as with some psychologists who have gone off the goof-a-meter and blab psychobabble all day long, some of what they say is just heretical and Gnostic.

I agree with several who have stated that all things good come from God, not some New Age idea.

My only question is about the human mind, and what we don’t know about it. Is it possible that there are dimensions of the mind that science has not learned of yet that can explain some things that occur? And if there were, would this be against anything God has revealed to us about us humans? What I mean is that the Church teaches (in Sacred Scripture) that we are made in the image of God. Does that mean just physically (human body) or does that include the mind, the inner workings of the human brain?

No Shoshana, you are wrong. This is not a Catholic world we live in. Just because YOU don’t like Oprah, doesn’t mean that she can’t help others in their personal “search”. Prove to me that she is doing the devil’s work. You can’t. You have an opinion. Your opinion is not fact.

If Oprah is doing Satan’s work, then there are quite a few Catholics doing it as well.
Bella, sorry but YOU are wrong. Satan has got you fooled too. And just because you think many other Catholics are “doing this” does not make “the secret” right. Or just because many Catholics watch Oprah to “get help” does not make Oprah right. There are many Catholics who don’t even know their own faith. Since they dont’ know their own faith, perhaps they are going to follow “the secret” along with Oprah.

What’s this about “personal search?” Personal search?! What is that?! Why go to Oprah anyway for any kind of help when we have JESUS CHRIST?!

Like Father Corapi says;

“Satan will throw in 99 truths to get in 1 lie.”

I truly believe this is true. And that is why Satan fools so many people.

While I’m no fan of Oprah, to say she is doing Satan’s work I think is a bit of a stretch. Nobody has any proof to that effect.

Mikew262, that’s a really good point. Ideally, it would be good to hear an opinion from someone who read the book, but I think it’s fairly new & no one seems to have read it. Also, I think a lot of the people on these forums choose to avoid this like the plague.
A few posters saw the DVD or the Oprah show. I read a description of the show on Oprah’s site, & that was enough to concern me. I watched a trailor for the DVD at www.The SecretLinks.com. I checked out www.thesecret.tv.com & www.agapelive.com. This thread had warned me that this is based on occult & ancient far-eastern practices & gnosticism. These sites confirmed it for me.
thechrismyster had an informative post on the other thread that provided a link to amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS…teritysoft.20/ . A lot of this is based on 2 books by Esther & Jerry Hicks, The Law of Attraction & Ask & It Is Given: Learning To Manifest Your Desires. The authors channeled a group of non-physical beings collectively known as “Abraham” to find the wisdom in the 2nd book. “Abraham” says, We are called Abraham, & we are speaking to you from the Non-Physical dimension…"

I have to say, that one line there creeped me out more than anything. If I understand it correctly, a group of a few demons has led to the “New Thought” study of “Abrahamism”.

That was plenty of info for me… If someone in my family reads this, I might read it to enable me to refute it. Otherwise, I’m afraid my faith & sense of discernment might not be developed enough. I’ve seen enough to make me start praying for those affected by this. (Sorry so long!)

As soon as I get my hands on it, I will read. Have read the Prayer of Jabez and refuted it in all of its deception…

Looking forward to any light you can shed on this. I suspect my book group is going to want to read this. I want no part of it, but I need good, solid arguments, so my objections don’t just get pooh-poohed as close-mindedness.

I will do my best Carol…it is not unusual for me to do this for a priest-friend of mine anyway. And you are right…we cannot just say we have a bad feeling about something. We need concrete stuff in front of us…🙂

Nobody is calling Oprah Satan, or even a willing tool of Satan. But we would be fools if we thought that the Devil either didn’t exist (therefore, neither Oprah nor anybody else, could not be a part of a deception of Satan), or that even assuming a person–ANY person–somehow was immune from being used, willingly or not, by Satan.

So many people think of Satan as “something in a red body suit with horns and tail” and since they reject that picture, think they reject Satan. They don’t–they reject a kind of ‘idea’ of Satan, but not the real Satan. And so it is easy for Satan (who can look like an angel of light, remember?) to slip in and fool lots of people.

We all do satan’s business in some way or another. Oprah is no different. She is just much more visible and influential, and by all objective means, a fan of things “new age”. No one is saying she’s is satan’s minion, but certainly she is deceived in some way, as is many people within modern secular culture.

I NEVER said that Oprah “is doing Satan’s work” in the way that you might be thinking. Not once in my post did I say that ‘Oprah’ has got us all fooled. I said “Satan has got you fooled too” not ‘Oprah.’ (Not “you”). I never said that she was deliberately doing Satan’s work. None of us deliberately want to do Satan’s work but we all do it since we are sinners. We just don’t do it directly. I don’t think the majority of people reading or lurking in here are actual Satanists. I really didn’t want to say the ‘majority’ (I would’ve rather said "none of us are Satanists) but you never know who’s lurking in here to learn our ‘secrets’ so that they can later twist them around to ‘honor satan.’

And as far as proof, the world as it is today should be proof enough that we all contribute to sin.

My protestant sister has three books on that. One for her, one for her teenager and one for her 5 year old daughter. I didn’t know this until my daughter told me just now when she saw your post.

I went to the website, there are two, one is .org and one is .com. But can you enlighten me on what is negative about this? I don’t doubt that it is negative but if you can explain to me what is bad about this ‘prayer’ then maybe I can enlighten my sister about it. Not that she’ll listen to me or that I’ll tell her anytime soon but I’ll get the nerve to tell her some day. “Nerve” being “God’s time to tell me that it is time to tell her.”

I had it in my old computer but now Ionly have it on paper as theis computer does not have floppy disk. So, tell you what…give me time to type it. It is not in this newcomputer and will get back to you for sure. Now mind you, it is only li’l ol’ me…I am no great apologist. Apologist or not, the deception is there…I can also link you with some negative stuff about The prayer of Jabez. 🙂

I must agree with you…I don’t think she does it knowingly…so far she has been able to resist Scientology …so that says something for her…after all the scientology stars on her show and John Trovolta trying to get her to read the scientology books…still she resists…but she has always been a bit new age…
I think Oprah does everything knowingly. I also think she is involved in Scientology. I think eventually that will come out. Think of her links to the stars. Do a google search of Oprah and scientology and you will get quite a few hits. Many people think she is very involved.

I’ll check it out Fitz…I guess I didn’t want to believe it:eek:

I too have stated that she does everything knowingly…she a smart woman for sure…and perceptive to boot!

It is too bad she calls herself a Christian…she would know better!😦 It causes so much confusion…

I’m not a big Oprah fan believe me, but after reading all the posts here has anybody actually read “The Secret”? It seems all I’m reading is hearsay evidence that this book is bad and should be avoided.

I’d much rather read the opinion of somebody that has actually read it.
Mike,

I bought the DVD right before all this Oprah stuff came up. Which believe me…Oprah has boosted it, but it’s not like it was unknown prior to that. It was a big book after all.

I’m going to watch it tonight, I’ve put it off for too long.

The people involved in promoting it seem suspect, but there is more to it than the marketing, there is the root message.

If anyone would like, I could attempt to pick out and decipher and critique the root message (pro and con). If not, I will still do it for my own benefit but won’t bother to type anything of it here.

There’s other discussions of it that are surely more comprehensive and eloquent than what my little presentation would be.
