2 Kings 2:11 says: “As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind”
What is the Catholic interpretation of this passage? Was Elijah taken into Heaven in body and soul? How does this relate to Mary’s Assumption? My understanding is that Mary is the only human creature that has been assumed into Heaven in body and soul in anticipation of Judgement Day because of her special role in salvation history. What does the Church tell us about how to interpret Elijah being taken into Heaven?
