In the 1950s, Kathy Griffin would have ended her career had she dared to mouth off as she did in public.

In the 1950s, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen was in everybody’s living rooms, and won an Emmy for his show. Think he said something like what Miss Griffin said for his acceptance speech?

In the 1950s, we all pledged allegiance to our flag and sang Christmas carols in school, and there were no metal detectors and no mass school shootings. I could go on. Don’t feign ignorance.

Oh, but one thing has nothing to do with the other. Whatevs.

It seems you’re unable to separate your anger at Kathy Griffin from the bigger issue of censorship.

But to respond to the above quote:

Are you suggesting that lack of pledging and Christmas carols are somehow related to metal detectors and school shootings?

We also had white and black bathrooms in the 50’s.

We also had no tolerance for homosexuals in the 50’s.

You should move to WV. The kids still do that stuff in school here. They are behind the curve a bit on getting them ready for this world of ours, but that is my job. Tim

I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus.”

Now I could have been mildly insulted at that and turned the other cheek, as the founder of Christianity taught. But then she went on to say “Suck it, Jesus. This award is my God now.”

Needless to say, she offended me and millions of other Christians.

Why does this stuff surprise any of you?

1.) Quit watching it!
2.) Write the network that showed it and express your displeasure.

We are weaning ourselves off TV here at our house. I cut out 40 channels and HBO. Nobody noticed until some cocamamie thing came on HBO, and it was blocked. It took two months for anybody to be able to tell.

And to tolerate sin is indeed the wrong approach. Love the sinner, not the sin.

👍 👍 It’s no different from calling all Germans Nazis, or all Irishmen drunken wife-beaters,or all Italians lazy - that some or many are or have been, is not a reason to condemn all. Catholics don’t like being tarred with the guilt of what a good many Catholics have done, after all; are all Catholics in the entire world Jew-hating child-molesters ? Of course not. Neither are all liberals the lovers of all things vicious & sordid that some people seem to imagine.

Of course, it’s much easier to get through life if one imagines that all virtue & light is the exclusive possession of the group one happens to be in - but that sort of oversimplification is for children, not grown-ups. Real life is not that simple.

As for Kathy Griffin - what’s the big deal ? However regrettable what she said may be, none of us is in a position to be her judge (that is something best left to Almighty God, Who Alone sees all that is in the hearts of all people; we don’t, & can’t, & we have no business gate-crashing people’s souls when Christ Himself does not) . People who throw a wobbly every time some more or less public figure says a bad word or expresses an opinion they find unpleasant, are merely setting themselves up to become hypersensitive to every little thing that doesn’t meet with their approval. Such people are not very good company, & tend to end up very lonely - unsurprisingly. If that is what Christianity, or Catholicism in particular, does to people, then there’s not much to be said for either of them.

You’re joking, right? Whereas none of us are the judge of this woman’s soul, her words were a disgusting attack on God. This is a self-described militant atheist. She is militantly in favor of banishing God from our culture. Truly, there are certain matters which are ripe for over-sensitivity, but for those of us who guard against being a whining “victim” everytime someone insults our faith, this is an offense on the level of dipping a crucifix in urine and calling it art.

So, excuse me if I find your tepid response to these vile sentiments of Kathy Griffin to be somewhat disturbing. Whereas we cannot judge her soul, we can certainly repudiate her actions and call the public’s attention to the gravity of what she did. This, in and of itself, is an act of mercy toward our neighbors.

Maybe because the root issue of their Bush-bashing is a dreadful fear that he is going to “do something crazy, get us into a nuclear war, and get us all killed?” This is a direct quote from an acquaintance of mine who is extremely anti-Bush. I’m not defending the Bush-bashers, mind you, but fear is likely a big part of it. I wish they would take the energy they spend on bashing Bush and use it instead to pray for him and his administration. :gopray2:

One of the spiritual acts of mercy is to admonish sinners. We have a duty to our neighbors to point out the grave insult to God that this woman perpetrated. No one’s judging her soul. Her actions will be her own judge when the time comes.

As for censorship, the Church certainly teaches that we should avoid occasions of sin. This spew could certainly be an occasion of sin to those who hate the Church, as well as to those who love the Church and may become uncharitable out of anger. This is nothing but verbal pornography and beneficial to no one.

A return to a Godly nation will not help to prevent school shootings? “Tolerating” Griffin’s disgraceful behavior will?
 
A police officer was speaking about how neighborhoods decay and attract crime. I think it has some important parallels to this story. I’m paraphrasing:

“When a neighborhood is well maintained, people going by will know that it’s cared for. But something as simple as unrepaired broken glass in a building invites trouble. It encourages kids to come around and break more glass or write graffiti. Then you get people hanging around doing drug deals and such because they think people have stopped caring about their neighborhood.”

We, as Christians, need to care about comments like this. We need to speak in truth and love so as to say: This is an offense to ourselves and our God. This is not meant as a condemnation for Miss Griffin, but as a truthful response to an antireligious comment made to a wide audience. In the United States, we have free exercise of our religious freedom, as she does. It is always best to seek understanding and reconciliation.
