I know that when I taught kids and teens, I had to crush this false idea every year.

No, grannma is not an angel, your Uncle Joe is not an angel. A human does not become an angel when they die any more than they become porcupines when they die.

It’s a category error. They are thinking “heavenly beings who are not God = angels,” and not thinking “non-human pure spirits who are not God = angels.”

It’s also what happens when people don’t distinguish between “angels taking on human forms and names” and “angels are humans,” or when they attend churches that don’t believe in devotion to human saints but do believe in devotion to angels. Plus movies. Ugh.

Any Catholic who gets caught in these mistakes has been pretty badly taught, or left untaught. But Protestants unconsciously may be trying to get around theological errors of their own churches.

I agree since I’ve read that before. It doesn’t stop MANY Christians, Catholic and Protestant alike, to say that heaven got another angel when someone dies.
An idea born out of wanting to think the very best of a situation.
Heavy on emotion, not so much on actual scholarship.
