I suppose you might call it a cop out, but there’s belief and then there’s what we can reasonably hope to effect in the public/political landscape. It’s like pushing on a spaghetti noodle. If people want to call themselves “married” they will, legally recognized or not. We can’t really stop them. Shoot, I know two lesbian couples in Texas who call themselves “married” when they are no such thing…they’ve never even had any sort of civil or religious ceremony. Some conservatives have tried to skirt and sidestep the gay marriage agenda saying they’re in favor of “civil unions.” It seems a cop out to me. A serious Christian should be uncompromising in this area—civil unions and marriage are completely off limits for homosexuals, period.
I could call myself purple if I wanted. “I’m purple!” Am I purple? No. Did I take some purple away from things that are really purple…make them less purple? No.
The Church doesn’t recognize gay marriages, plural marriages, common law marriages…they have all co-opted the word marriage but the total change that’s effected on the Catholic sacrament of marriage is 0%.
(Now, I believe that homosexual relationships are wrong and that our society’s growing acceptance of homosexuality as “mainstream” is harmful. In the best of all possible worlds, I would love it if the Catholic Church got to have its way on this issue…heck, ALL issues!
