I like your style, lax16.
Good! šŸ™‚

Shall we continue with our Hugh Nibley lesson?
it should not be too much to ask you to hand in by the end of the semester (which will give you more time than he had)
from: jacobprimo.blogspot.com/2007/11/book-of-mormon-translation-timeline.html

**Sept 1827-**Joseph finally takes possession of the plates

April 1828-Joseph begins translation of Book of Lehi with Martin Harris as scribeJune 1828-Manuscripts for Book of Lehi are lost

July 1828- Joseph receives revelation telling him his gift of translating is taken away for a season

Sept 1828-Joseph starts re-translation of Book of Mormon without any instructions from God or any kind of revelation. He just does it on his own, the really odd thing is he doesn’t attempt to re-translate the Book of Lehi, and skips 1Nephi, 2Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jarom, Omni and Words of Mormon. He continues where he left off chronologically at the end of the Book of Lehi, or the beginning of Mosiah. His wife Emma served as scribe.

April 1829-Joseph begins the ā€œrapid-fireā€ translation now with Oliver Cowdery as scribe

May 1829-Joseph receives revelation not to re-translate Book of Lehi and to replace it with Books of Nephi. The Lord also tells Joseph that ā€œNOWā€ his gift of translating is ā€œrestoredā€ hmm…

June 1829-Transcript is finished, witnesses ā€œseeā€ the plates and Joseph gives them back to Moroni.

How long are the semesters at BYU?

So he likes your style, but does not answer your questions.

If the questions are too hard…act like they were never asked…interesting strategy

Hugh Nibley asssignment (continued)
five to six hundred pages in length.
from Mormonthink:

The first edition of the Book of Mormon

When the BOM was first published in 1830, it looked very different than today. The text was all in paragraph form. The original BOM had the appearance of an average ā€˜non-religious’ book. The modern BOM used in the Church looks much more ā€˜biblical’ as everything has been put into numbered chapters and verses, cross referenced with footnotes, etc.

So when determining whether or not Joseph could have written the Book of Mormon, we should actually be looking at the first edition of the BOM and not the current version we have today which has been altered by people other than Joseph Smith.

from: apologeticspress.org/rr/reprints/Book-of-Mormon.pdf

There are literally thousands of grammatical errors in the original edition of the Book of Mormon—
errors that gradually have been changed in later editions. These take the form of such things as double
negatives, incorrect adverbs and adjectives, and incorrect tenses. Note the following examples.

The original edition of the Book of Mormon contained dozens of misspelled words…

Can a BYU student write a paper with thousands of grammatical errors and dozens of misspelled words and turn it in without correction?

TY I only just recently started using the pretty link function.

I hope he answers my questions. If not, at least I am learning a lot from doing the ā€œresearch.ā€

So far, by using Hugh Nibley’s comparison, Joseph Smith is either not the uneducated farm boy he has always been portrayed to be or BYU students are a rather unusual group of young people. šŸ˜‰

He won’t.

He can’t

To answer truthfully acknowledges Joseph was a fraud.

So, either he lies, or he does not answer. That is a tough choice best resolved by not answering.

Still, I WOULD like to see some responses from Mormons…

Yes, I hope gazelam returns. The questions are piling up!
That is younger than most students at BYU?
How many BYU students can go into the woods and learn more in two hours from their Bible than they can in two years of meetings?

NeuroTypical has done the same thing.

When caught in a situation where he couldn’t adequately defend the mormon church, he stopped posting.

He has been online looking around, but hasn’t posted.

Very stereotypical.

Look…they simply cannot reply. They have no answers. When it is proven that your leader made everything up, it is tough to respond.

I had a similar situation with LivingWaters.

I sure miss the good ol’ days of ParkerD and Dianiad! At least we could always count on a daily response from them. šŸ™‚

I wonder if the LDS posters come on here either:
  1. truly believing that the LDS church and JS have an airtight case and are surprised to find out that there is evidence to the contrary
or
  1. they don’t expect Catholics to be able to defend their faith
(perhaps it is a little bit of both)

Maybe they weren’t aware of all of the information available on the internet and were caught off guard.

As much as I knew about JS, recentIy I have read even more debunking the person they claim he is.

Little by little, I think they will move away from JS and the BoM - one of my son’s thinks that they will eventually become a group like the Masons.

I didn’t even get a response from LivingWaters - I even offered to buy him a book!

I wish the LDS posters would engage in dialogue because I would like to know how they feel about the information presented.

Dianiad was a hoot and Parker was a steady apologist - at least they never backed down from a post! šŸ˜›

It was in those days that I’m surprised I didn’t get booted from the forum. I mean really, when you think back…:banghead:

Yeah, it really would get interesting sometimes! Some of those conversations would get heated…but really a lot would get discussed in great detail. They didn’t shy away from the questions and would stick with the topics for days-weeks-months!

They sure gave it their best shot!!
