**Eurovision 2016: Ukraine win over rivals Russia and Australia in tension-filled climax - and four other things we learned
Ukraine win the day
Ukraine have won Eurovision with a political, heartfelt and serious song about something with intense personal meaning to the singer, Jamala. It’s a song about Stalin’s forced deportation of Crimean Tatars, including members of Jamala’s own family, in 1944.
In the run-up to the contest, Russia complained that Ukraine shouldn’t be allowed to sing this particular song, as Eurovision generally bans overtly political songs, not least when they have contemporary resonances like this.**
But Jamala was eventually cleared to compete, and in the end she ended up going head-to-head with pre-contest favourite Russia’s Sergey Lazarev for the title. Her win proves that emotional and high-quality music can triumph at Eurovision, and the contest will always have a political element, no matter how much the organisers try to pretend it’s about music above all else…
After sending two storming performances in two years, Australia have proved that they take Eurovision seriously. If Dami Im had won, nobody would have begrudged her the title: she sang a brilliant song with real panache.
And nothing about Eurovision has ever really made any sense, so having Australia being a part of things doesn’t even feel that weird. Not with all of the other madness that’s always part and parcel of Eurovision every year, anyway.

So Ukraine confounded the bookmakers and Eurovision commentators who had been convinced that Russia - or possibly Australia - would win.
The computer graphics behind Russia’s song and the brilliance of Australia’s singing weren’t enough to defeat jazz artist Jamala.
She is the first ever Crimean Tatar to perform at the contest, and her song could not have been further from the usual Eurovision fare.
1944 is about the mass deportation during World War Two of the entire ethnic Tatar population from Crimea, by Soviet troops under the orders of Stalin.
Jamala dedicated the song to her great grandmother Nazylkhan, who with her five children were among a quarter of a million Tatars who packed on trains “like animals”.
“I had to release their souls. Because they never came back to Ukraine,” she has said.**

There were questions about how the votes were awarded and whether it was fair. BTW, UK finished last?

Not last but near the bottom. Our song was really duff and this is “Brexit referendum” year so no surprises there.

I think it was very fair. Eurovision is 50/50 a jury of musical experts and the popular vote in each country. When this was tallied together, Jamala for Ukraine had a clear victory.

Personally I thought Australia had the best song by far and Russia was good to, very Euro-pop and impressive pyrotechnics.

But in the end, Ukraine tugged at the heart strings with Jamala’s raw, personal story.

PersonallyI have neverreally watched this contest. It is basically homoerotic show now. 😊

Haha, that’s what I used to think too but this year it was actually better. There wasn’t the same political voting with the juries either (ie. neighbour countries), which made it tenser than usual since the board was all over the place.

It is still a bit on the “camp” side though, I’ll concede 😃

Interestingly the camp element among performers seems to come from Isreal and the Eastern European states. And last year there was the suggestive Polish milk maid which had to be partly cut.

The song is anti-war song, the singer is Ukrainian Tatar singer, Jamala song-statement should be also interpreted as a powerful statement against Putinism, what Stalin’s government was doing in the 20th century to Tatars, Putin is now doing to the Tatars in the Russian-occupied Crimea, by the Stalinist-modern way approach.
The Tatars unfortunately did not get much from Ukraine, from economic and national- approving sence, but the song is the occasion to draw attention to the problems of the Crimean Tatar people in the Russian-occupied Crimea.

So Ukraine won the award on the basis of a dislike of the politics of Russia. The people of Crimea voted to join Russia and the west does not want to allow them the right of self determination but would rather they be under the heel of NATO. Further, Russia does not allow SS marriage and does not allow the distribution of homosexual material to children and does not allow cursing in their movies. The west demands the right to curse and to use the Holy Name of Our Divine Lord in their movies and theatrical presentations.

Let’s get a couple of things straight here:
  • Russia militarily invaded and occupied Crimea, then the territory of its sovereign neighbour under international law, and enforced a rubber-stamp “referendum” to cover up its blatant land grab
  • Russia has the highest abortion rate in Europe and is hardly a bastion of sexual morality, as indicated by this:
dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3525344/Shooting-DOG-sex-girlfriend-flashing-breasts-drinking-urine-Spoiled-teenage-grandson-Russian-oligarch-proves-people-money.html
  • Russia’s treatment of homosexuals extends beyond mere opposition to same-sex marriage (which I support Russia regarding), to promoting a hyper-masculine, homophobic culture in which gay men feel physically and psychologically threatened. That is unacceptable and discriminatory.
  • The West is the region of the world populated by advanced, developed, high-income liberal democracies founded upon the rule of law, popular sovereignty and human rights. Russia is a mafia state run by corrupt oligarchs and an authoritarian cult of personality centered around Putin. The notion that we would prevent the holding of a legitimate referendum on self-determination for a group of people, with our democratic heritage, while absolutist Russia would is nothing short of laughable.
  • Catholicism is not a state-recognised religion in Russia, even today. That’s bad in my book.

Here is the official website of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Moscow Russia. It has several pictures and a video.

Congresswoman Yelena Mizulina has been in the forefront of an effort to restrict and reduce abortions in Russia. She was sanctioned by the American government.

They did not. After the West started ‘helping out’ in the Ukrainian protests and then ‘admitted’ to helping choose the anti-Russian coup d’etat government, Russia offered, the majority Russian populated, Crimea a referendum to become a republic within Russia and from under the rule of the anti-Russian, illegal coup government. The referendum was taken and the rest is history. No riots/protests from the Crimeans, only celebrations.

Possibly, but it would be interesting to see where the statistics originate from.

Where is the proof of that - or is it from the usual Western MSM anti-Russia propaganda sources. There are gay clubs in Russian cities, e.g. Moscow, gay magazines, a well recognised gay scene, etc…so if that ‘were’ the case there would be none, or it would be completely underground. theguardian.com/cities/2015/jun/13/gay-putin-moscow-life-nightlife-clubbing-law-lgbt

True, for political/historical and other reasons but moves have been made by the RO church, to the RC, when the Pope and Patriarch met, in Cuba. It will not happen overnight.

Putin has also vowed to assist persecuted Christians, worldwide, a topic that is not much discussed, if at all, by Western governments…

Congresswoman Yelena Mizulina has been in the forefront of an effort to restrict and reduce abortions in Russia. She was sanctioned by the American government.
Yes but not for her pro-life advocacy.

Every poll taken shows that the overwhelming majority of the people of Crimea want to join Russia. The west opposes the human right of self determination for Crimea.

Tell that to the Tatars and numerous others who had to flee Crimea during the 2014 annexation or stay at home for fear of the green - clad Russian soldiers patrolling outside the voting booths.

your arguments are one-sided and twisted.
if we talk about democratic elections and the desire to be independent, then Tuva and Yakutsk are the first on the list for democratic elections.😉
in the bowels of those siberian lands there are hundreds of billions of dollars, they can live richly as the citizens of Arabic Emirates.
you can dream that Mr. Putin will allow them democratic elections.
the same can be said about the peoples of the North Caucasus
(The Chechens voted too when Yeltsin proposed them “to take as much independence as possible”.and we know how Russia responded then to the will of the people.)
and about morality and immorality here you further exaggerate.
