I can’t imagine anyone calling belief a string unless they were hiding from the Light.

Rinnie, just to be clear, I didn’t mean you. I meant like atheists.

Also of I may add. That is why you hear Salvation is only through the Catholic Church. Show me one protestant Preacher who claims they can forgive sin. You won’t! But you will hear it in the Catholic Church. And we have the bible to back us up.

John 20:22-23 RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. WHOS SINS YOU FORGIVE ARE FORGIVEN THEM. WHO SINS YOU RETAIN ARE RETAINED.

My own Mother in law just told me this the other day, She said that my Priest has no authority. Her faith rejects this scripture. How I do not understand?
Rinnie, if I had to guess, all religion aside, I would say your Mother-in-law is coming from Hebrews 10.
I’ve never understood the need of a middle-man either.

Then why did Jesus give his disciples the power to forgive sin? Why also does Paul refer to the possibility of him being lost after bringing so many others to Christ?

Who goes to heaven? Regardless of one’s religion only apostolic Christians will go to heaven. Social Christians are not Biblical, and are only a recent phenom of recent Christianity. Do you believe what the Apostles believe? Do you believe your Eucharist gives you a license to sin? How can you be a liberal with God’s word. Yet, I see many of my brother and sister Catholics acting like a bunch of heathens. As Catholics we need to get more acquainted with the Bible. The Pope just requested we do Bible studies. When I first became a Catholic I told the priest that I didn’t feel a need to go to confession. He said as long as I asked God to forgive me that was fine. I do feel, however, we are the most biblically based church. Our entire service is found in the Bible.

There was a famous preacher in England named Spurgeon. It is well known that wwhen he preached sermons about hell the parishoners would scream for him to stop.

Praise to our soon to be King Jesus Christ!

In hindsight (and reading my post you quoted), I didn’t mean to be disrespectful when I said “middle man”. Go-between isn’t much better so I’ll just stop.
I apologize if I offended anyone.

Marsha, I would like to have a look at the scriptures, and there’s not enough there to bring to mind a time when Paul was concerned about his own salvation. Was he double-minded at times? Yes, he was human. The things I want to do I don’t do, etc. I praise the Lord for Paul because I see myself in his failings. But he wasn’t double-minded in his teachings. Right now, I just keep thinking of "“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith…” as Paul was looking forward to going to Heaven.

Gonna go read what abilities Jesus gave the disciples. Casting out devils, healing the blind and sick, forgiving sins? I don’t recall that. You would save me time if you have the scripture handy. Thanks!

LOL, I’m an eager learner. Couldn’t leave fast enough to go read.
I meant to say "Casting out devils, healing the blind and sick, yes. forgiving sins?

1 Corinthians 9:26-27 (Amplified Bible)
26Therefore I do not run uncertainly (without definite aim). I do not box like one beating the air and striking without an adversary.

27But [like a boxer] I buffet my body [handle it roughly, discipline it by hardships] and subdue it, for fear that after proclaiming to others the Gospel and things pertaining to it, I myself should become unfit [not stand the test, be unapproved and rejected as a counterfeit].

Gonna go read what abilities Jesus gave the disciples. Casting out devils, healing the blind and sick, forgiving sins? I don’t recall that. You would save me time if you have the scripture handy. Thanks!

John 20:22-23 RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. WHOSE SINS YOU FORGIVE ARE FORGIVEN THEM. WHO SINS YOU RETAIN ARE RETAINED.
Here are the texts that you asked for.

But you must remember Jesus did not tell us those words for no reason. See my Mother in law does not understand scripture. Also I don’t go by the words of others, I go by Gods words. You have to remember Jesus gave the Apostles the Power to forgive sin, God gave Jesus the Power to forgive sin. Alot of the Jews felt Jesus also had no right to forgive sin. Remember. But see Jesus understood the reason for a middle man. He may not have explained it in a way that you like, but he did say it. He did not say that we have the power to forgive our own sin. He said we must repent, and do Penance. Penance is confession. The Sacrament of Penance is a gift from God. That another free gift he has given us to keep our salvation. See how they both tie in together.

Now why do you think Jesus gave the apostles that power? He had to have a reason right?

Marsha, I found it. John 20:23.
Know that I’m coming from a non-religious point of view here. I would guess that Jesus was giving all authority to the eleven. Could they then transfer that authority to others?

Rinnie, No. I don’t see it.
After I believe, I want that gift. My belief is not a string because I already believe. I can’t imagine anyone calling belief a string unless they were hiding from the Light. We all make choices in life. Choices do not equal stings attached. A family member dies. The attorney calls and says “Come pick up your inheritance check”. Free money- no strings. I can choose to pick up the check or not. If I choose not to, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a check waiting with my name on it.

As to “and do you want to keep it” - “For God so loved that world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes, repents, says 10 hail Marys, is baptized and keep the commandments, shall not perish but have everlasting life.”

Is that what God’s Word says? No.

Don’t you think that something as important as our salvation would be made clear in scripture? That’s why all apparent contradictions need to be personally investigated and reconciled based on the foundation that every Word of scripture is Truth. You said "Jesus himself says He who endures to the end will be saved(matt 24-13)
Matthew 24 is Jesus speaking about the Tribulation, and I don’t plan on being here to “endure to the end” when God pours out His wrath upon the world. The church (the body of Christ) is promised to be saved from the wrath to come, so we won’t be around. Jesus is speaking to Jews (and any others I would presume) who will be saved in those last days.

I would have to ponder and study “once saved always saved”. I don’t recall any mention of a easer when speaking of the Book of Life. Seems that something as important as LOSING your salvation would be spelled out clearly. It has been my experience that those who are supposedly saved, yet show no evidence, were never saved in the first place - Just my opinion on that matter.
Well hold on a minute, Where in the bible does it say that you cannot fall from Grace. Now I will admit I never have heard it say you have salvation but there are strings attached, but I can see where someone can say that you have to stay in the good Grace of God to have Salvation.

1 Corinthians 9:26-27

Thanks, Marsha.

Do you ever doubt? I know that I know that I know, and I sometimes doubt. Thomas got to hang out with the Living Christ and doubted. Paul’s gospel to the Gentiles is pure and clean and totally on message, but Paul was human just like us.

But you must remember Jesus did not tell us those words for no reason. QUOTE]

Rinnie, that’s true. Those will be precious words (Matt. 24) for those who endure to the end during the tribulation. We can’t take scripture that describes the tribulation and those who find salvation at that time and say it describes every day and all people now.

Rinnie, if you can see it, please show it to me in scripture. Salvation by Grace is the gift. It’s not a gift if we have to stay in good to keep it.

Pardon my ignorance, but this “once saved always saved” issue is on another thread and I’m curious. If you feel that you can lose your salvation, what do you believe happens to you when you die?

No one can say what happens to them when they die. Did God not say that we will all have judgement day. Why would we have judgement day if we are not judged. Only God know who is going to be saved and who is not.

the N. T teaches us that genuine assurance is possible and desirable but is also WARNS US that we can be deceived through a FALSE ASSURANCE. Jesus said in Matt 7:21 Not everyone who says to me Lord Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven,

Think about it, how do you lose salvation, through Mortal Sin. How can someone have mortal sin and still be saved? One way, you must repent and confess that sin. You cannot confess and repent mortal sin on your own, You must have a priest. That is where John 20;21-23 comes in, It reconciles you with God. That is why we call it a sacrament.

I should also explain what a sacrament is. ( a sacrament is an OUTWARD SIGN instituted by GOD to GIVE GRACE.) See that is why confession is a Sacrament and can take you out of sin, and put you back into the good grace of God.

Confession is probally one of our only ways of staying in a state of Grace. Why, Because we all sin. Now if you do not have mortal sin on you, you do not have to confess that sin, but heres the thing, why would you not want to confess any sin, to be on the safe side. And by confessing a sin you not only get back into the good Grace of God, you also get more FREE GIFTS as you call it. you get additional GRACE from God to help you from not sinning again.

Sure we can confess our sins to God in private, thats okay too, but God did not tell us to do that. He said to repent and do Penance. So why not do both? Why not accept that great Sacrament God gave us.

I am totally rejoicing here!. What the Pope has done is HUGE, enlightened and far-thinking. I think it’s awesome and it adds to my hope. Thanks for telling it, a burger!

I’m a fan of what little I’ve read of Spurgeon. If I listened to the atheists, a Spurgeon fan makes me a nut. 🙂 But I like his no-holds-barred preaching style. They say of his sermon “Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God” that he read it straight, without voice inflection, right off his notes.

I once got so frustrated with my atheist friends that I told them what they wanted me to say all along - That yes, here is what the Bible says is your fate.(Ever notice that atheists talk more about hell then anyone?) My Christian friends turned their backs to me. Oh, they came back around, but they would tell me today that I was wrong to speak “brimstone”.

Gonna hit the bed now, Hope I have help in some small way. If there is anything I can do to help you lean the faith, I will sure try. I know its alot to grasp. Ive been RC my whole life and I am still learning. You will learn until God takes you out of this world. Some you will learn from others, some God will open up to you in special ways. What amazing is someone can try to explains something to you for years, then one day God just opens your eyes up, and you are like wow, How did I miss it. You are on the right road. Just keep traveling my Love. Good night!

Let’s look at the verses: "10For we must all appear and be revealed as we are before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive [his pay] according to what he has done in the body, whether good or evil [considering [a]what his purpose and motive have been, and what he has **achieved, been busy with, and given himself and his attention to accomplishing]. (Amplified Bible) a. Alexander Souter, Pocket Lexicon of the Greek New Testament. b. Joseph Thayer, A Greek-English Lexicon. (2 Corinthians 5:10)

(Jesus speaking to the Pharisees) "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. (Matt. 12:36-37)

Rinnie, on this day of Judgment, how could the verdict be anything but “Guilty as Charged!”?

That’s where we would be without the Blood of Jesus.**

Jesus said in Matt 7:21 Not everyone who says to me Lord Lord shall enter the kingdom of heaven

Rinnie, I found this board while searching the internet for better understand of a Catholic friend who, through many private emails finally confided that she can’t believe the Bible and though she feels she is saved, can’t believe the Jesus of the Bible.

I refuse to go near trying to judge someone’s salvation. Only God knows what’s in our hearts. But sometimes I see these tv preachers leading thousands astray in the name of Jesus, and I get a glimpse of their end as in Matt. 7.

I’m sorry, but I know nothing of Mortal Sins. I’ve heard the term, but the only unforgivable sin I know of is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, and of course, rejecting God’s Perfect Gift.

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When I was a weird little girl, I worried that if I died suddenly I wouldn’t have time to ask forgiveness for my sins. Later, I learned that confession to God was an act of obedience and not a requirement of salvation. If I just pray “forgive me for my sins”, I really haven’t reflected on those sins so there can’t be any real repentance. But the point being, God is sufficient because He said He is.
