Edit for purposes of charity
🤷

Faith1960 isn’t the source of “the earth is flat”, or the comment about the sun; he is clearly repeating what someone else has said that he had no reason to doubt up until now. That doesn’t have anything to do with being “smart”, but rather trusting blindly.

So, In what way would the bolded line be uncharitable (if that’s what you mean)?

Clearly, intelligence, knowledge, ignorance are not all improved today over yesterday in every person. I don’t recall anyone (least of all Faith1960, or you?) proudly claiming to be the most intelligent person alive for all ages – therefore, I directly insulted no-one. At most, it’s a near miss. As far as I know, Faith1960 doesn’t even believe that the ECF’s thought the world was FLAT “flat”. Do you?

I think they most certainly did think that, back in the day…

The Myth of the Flat Earth

Introduction

We all know that Christopher Columbus encountered stiff resistance about his idea of sailing off West to try and reach the East Indies. Many of us have laboured under the impression that people were concerned that he would sail off the edge of the Earth which was widely believed to be flat. History is thought to have vindicated Columbus against those filled with the Christian superstition of a flat Earth who held on to old fashioned beliefs. A minority of people are even under the impression that Galileo’s trial centred on the subject rather than whether the Earth orbited the sun.
It comes as some surprise, therefore, to find that Columbus was wrong and his critics were right - not because the world is actually flat after all, but because at the time everyone knew it was a globe and were arguing about how big it was. The idea that the uncouth people of the Middle Ages thought the Earth was flat is an example of the myth that has been propagated since the nineteenth century to give us a quite unfair view of this vibrant and exciting period.

Do you have a secular source?

Do you have a secular source?
I mentioned St. Augustine, circa year 400, who’s writings in black and white show that he understood there could be people on the other side of the earth – though he had no reason to believe there were people there – eg: stating it as a fact without proof is a “fable”. What difference does it make that he is a religious source? Its even MORE ironic that he is a religious source.

I am not denying that SOME people thought the earth was ‘flat’… (Whatever that means) but that ought not color one’s perception of the whole human race.

newadvent.org/cathen/01581a.htm

Notice, anti-pode generally means the “EXACT opposite side of a sphere”. Augustine is in northern Africa (Hippo), and may have been dark skinned to boot. I have never put him to the test, using a Globe and go 180 degrees from the tip of north Africa. Is it water or land? Even if you discount Augustine, recognize that he had to have someone to argue with to even talk about the issue, and his argument is sound. He does NOT say, “they would fall off… ha ha ha”…

Are we, as Catholics, required to believe that Eve was literally created by God taking a rib from Adam while he was asleep or is that just a story?
Not being Catholic I am a little off topic. But I am not sure why we wouldn’t want to believe it.
The concept of typology, where something real is a type of something else, requires that the first thing be real.

The same typology is used in the narrative of Eli’s sons, where flesh is ripped from the side of Christ, which flesh he then marries. We do not challenge the historicity of Eli’s sons.

That the church came forth from the death of Christ is the ante-type of both narratives. By principle, it insists that both narratives are historical.

The rib only takes on typological significance after we see Christ. At the time it was written, there was no motivation for a parable as such. since they had no knowledge of Christ or the church.

Faith 1960 is innocent of the moving goalposts.
You are uncharitable to reason for doing so in the post number 56 where you move the goalpost to flat earthers.

What goalposts? What on earth are you talking about?
Of course Faith1960 is innocent of moving goal posts! There aren’t any.
🤷

If Faith1960 wants to gratuitously comment on part of my post, that’s his business.
It’s not like **I **built a “straw man” argument and tore Faith1960 down.

Just because the smart people today aren’t the same as those yesteryear (hint: they died). Doesn’t mean everyone is. The sun has spun on its axis next to mother earth for a very long time. There is nothing new under the sun. The magnetic fields of earth and sun predict some of the motion of the ions contained in them – which cause the magnetic field & the “northern” lights – which are now starting to show up at lower altitudes. Not only high people see them now, but very few people really understand how any of that “really” works even today.

Besides, in post 55 I gave a reasonably thorough discussion about Adam’s rib.
No joke!

Charity often consists in the little things. Like giving a person a warning before totally demolishing their argument. A hint or two, before they go too far.

Peace.

Is it possible I am viewing the thread in the default way, and not in a way where I can see the posts clearly (threaded vs something else)
Because I am seeing something that indicates one of us is clearly not seeing the posts.

I really have no idea what you’re talking about.

With all the talk today with stem cells and cloning is it so hard to except the “Possiblity” that God is able to take a man’s rib and make a woman? Really? Is it that hard?

I think you meant to say
accept, not except.
Who cares though.
Of course there is the possiblility. There is very little if any remnant of probablility in it.

I won’t even get into a debate about the logical fallacy you present in your post from the start because this is not apologetics. Just realize that you may not be able to get off so easy with a statement like that in apologetics.

I don’t know. It don’t know what you mean about “Getting away” with something. It just seems like basic common sense. Man is now on the brink of cloning. They take some cells from here, some cells from there. Before, a lot of the same people who were aetheists and saying the bible stories, like eve being made from Adam’s rib, were silly. Now they speak about cloning with reverence. So the whole Eve out of Adam’s rib thing is not so silly if you call it cloning it seems. Either that, or God seems a little more practical and maybe… BELIEVABLE!!! God forbid… oh wait.
