It’s distressing when a Pope’s words can’t be accepted at face value. And considering Saint John Paul 2 had one of the finest minds God ever gave a human being, the idea that commentators need to tell him what he meant to say is disturbing.
Fr Becker is a creationist.
Scott Hahn is brilliant and inspired, but he’s not a scientist, and doesn’t pretend to be.
Your paragraph about Darwin is a gross oversimplification.
Belloc likewise is not a scientist, he lived in a generation prior to John Paul 2, so while I love Belloc, I’ll accept John Paul’s words at face value.

Sorry Granny, but if we try to find out something about nature, we look at nature, we don’t consult Humani Generis nor the Catechism.
After all, nature was and is created by God, and there are plenty of God-believing scientists around to reassure us that there is no conflict.

To find purpose and reasons for the human soul, yes, we look at the Church and her teaching. You got it.
