Hi, I think EWTN should offer more eastern catholic programing. Id love to see a weekly byzantine divine litergy broadcasted. Who is with me? I think we should tell EWTN to make some changes, and be more inclusive to their eastern brothers and sisters.

I agree with you that more Eastern Catholic programming and have said as much in the past. I’m not sure we should “tell” them to make changes, but requesting that they do so politely would be something I could get behind.

I would love to see a weekly Divine Liturgy and it would be great to have at least one call in style show hosted by an Eastern priest. I’ve suggested in the past that Father Pacwa, who is able to celebrate in both the Eastern and Latin Rites, should host a show discussing the shared traditions between the two branches of our Catholic faith.

You can certainly petition EWTN if you’re a cable or satellite TV subscriber and give them your suggestion.

But you should know that the Byzantine rite is a pretty small minority in the Catholic Church, and the network does need to present programming that will interest lots of viewers to maintain their position in the cable TV network pecking order.

In the meantime, WEDO is now doing the webcast thingie, and they broadcast Byzantine Catholic liturgies each Sunday from McKees Rocks, PA. So you don’t have to do without, if EWTN decides not to go with your programming ideas.

EWTN is a television network of Roman Catholics to promote Roman Catholic traditions. I know of a number of Eastern Catholic priests who wanted to put together Eastern Catholic programs to make the Eastern Catholic Churches more known to Roman Catholics. Unfortunately the powers to be at EWTN wanted Eastern Catholic lite. No mention of married priesthood please, cut the Divine Liturgy down to fit in a 1 hour time frame please. How about some of those Latinized devotions.

I agree but EWTN is probably not going to be much of asource of Eastern Catholic programming. I will give Father Mitch credit though because he does mention fairly regularly things about Eastern Catholicism which is more than I hear any of the others do. I am being realistic because it is a Latin Catholic network.
Thanks Kielbasi for that link .🙂

Better yet, I wish they had their own network. Is that possible do you think? There CAN’T be that few Eastern … can there?

I am a Ukrainian Catholic, went to Ukrainian Catholic grade school and RC high school. What I have experienced is this: RCs do not really understand the Universality of the Catholic Church. If you are not RC, you are beneath them. And I am truly not bashing here. For example,1st day of high school, I was placed the first seat, first row (even though I was a J not an A) and my partner from gradeschool who was a K (set in the middle of the room, appropriately). The principal came in and asked for me. I have no clue why except for the fact that I have always spoken up for my faith and my right. She told me: I’m watching you. and I said (though I didnt mean it nastily or critical) I hope you do. Then immediately she criticized my ‘partner’ for crossing himself the wrong way. Now, that was up to him to tell her otherwise, though I am certain she knew we were Eastern Rite (and we were not the 1st Eastern Rites in that high school). Anyway, all of this changed when a son of the parish became an Eastern Rite priest, had his first mass at that RC church in the Eastern Rite style. Then, suddenly it was OK. Me and my ‘partner’ were asked to go to each home room and to explain how & why we receive Communion under both species and the other differences. (Again, without bashing, I would like to interject here that I was asked to leave the RC church during May Honors because ‘I didnt belong’).

I was on a phone interview in the old days with Mother Angelica Live show. They just dont know, they just dont understand. My interview at that time dealt with married priests.
With all my interactions between RC and ER I believe it is only honest ignorance. I usually end my interviews with the statement: If the Schism (Orthodox vs Eastern Rite Catholics) had not occurred, the RCs would be in the minority. Just like black vs white in the USA (The Civil War was in the US not the rest of the world) they just have no clue and as such neither does EWTN. to them it is a novelty, not the Universal church.

I personally lived through the ‘discrimination’ in our true faith in the USA just as my parents lived through it in the concentration camps and slave labor in Germany. Keep in mind that the first sin was the sin of pride: 1) The bad angels thought they were as good as God and 2) Adam and Eve took of the tree or Wisdom after the serpent told them they could be as gods.

This came to me in a dream: When the end times come the RC church will be attacked, and laid desolate, and we will succumb to what we ER Catholics are used to, the underground priests/churches to carry on the catholic faith.

OLTV needs our support if it is going to get off the ground. oltv.tv/

check it out!!
Yeah it’s a great site. It’s where I bought my Mytical theology dvd set by Kallistos ware.

Wish it was global like EWTN on the tele.

Keep supporting it and maybe it will be in the future!

Jack Figle is an amazing man…he has basically gotten this off the ground by himself by both supporting it financially and doing 90% of the leg work himself…he NEEDS our help…lets step up to the plate and give him a hand.

Any way you can! Promote it’s use, donate if you can, purchase the things offered, pray for them, volunteer time or whatever is needed. This ministry is VERY needed by the church right now…lets help out as much as we can. Lets put EWTN to shame!! 😃

Halyna , thats pretty sad, going through that kind of discrimination in a parochial school your parents pay for . Not that I care how this person or that person crosses themselves, even though I Cross myself the Orthodox Fashion , I would have told that lady that she needs to look in the mirror when she crosses herself so she can get it down right ! ha . but seriously I had looked at the history of the OCA and was shocked that even though it has roots in Slav tradition it really came about thanks to a Liberal Catholic Bishop (Ireland) over married priests not being allowed to serve among E C Churches . I brought this up once in in convo with some RC Friends , they weren’t keen at lying the blame for that debacle at the feet of a RC Bishop and said it was the EC Priests fault for causing the whole mess !. You mention that some RC loose sight of the universality of the Church I have found that as well among some Orthodox . indeed quiet unfortunate ,

In fairness, I don’t think Abp. Ireland was liberal. He’s a Latin Supremacist, but not liberal. I could be wrong though 😃 but the reason of his friction with St. Alexis Toth is that he was enforcing the law to the letter.

Though i do agree that there should be programing for all religions on television, I don’t think EC should be on EWTN. That’s like saying RC should be on a Protestant station (I would like that but I don’t think it would be right). Maybe find someone who is studying to go into television who is EC find out if they are interested in starting an EC station or program and go from there.

You don’t think Eastern Catholics should be represented on Catholic Television? Luckily EWTN doesn’t agree. There have been a number of excellent programs about the Eastern Catholic Churches. As OP says, we think here should be more.

I’m not personally interested in a weekly broadcast of the Divine Liturgy. I would like to see/hear a monthly program devoted to Eastern and Oriental Catholics. At least one of the Catholic Answers radio programs devotes a program weekly or monthly to Q& A for non-Catholics callers only. In a similar restricted focus it would good to have a weekly or monthly Q&A where the apologist is an EC/OC apologist. Since they don’t have to be in the studio to do the show EWTN/Catholic radio could do this easily.

Fr. Mitch may be only bi-ritual priest who has an ongoing program on EWTN but Fr. Benedict Groeschel is very knowledge about our Churches and about Holy Orthodoxy. I’ve been rather surprised at the accurate knowledge a number of the apologists on Catholic radio and TV have about our Churches and about Orthodoxy, on the occasions when questions come up about us. Questions about us do come up, just not often enough. And, for example, when someone asks about priestly celibacy the Latin apologists will initiate making the point that we ECs do have married priests. Or in discussions about the Eucharist they will bring up how we receive in Eastern Churches, and perhaps differences in our fasting., etc.

If we don’t keep asking it is guaranteed nothing will change. I also have said many times when they do air a good programs about our Churches contact them and thank them. Believe me the Latin faithful are plenty vocal about what they like and don’t like.

And I totally agree about OLTV and Jack Figle. What Jack has done for the Body of Christ is really unique. How many of you listened, and listened again, to the OL plenaries on Ancient Faith Radio and never made a donation to help cover the costs? It’s not too late! 🙂 I think that was the first time all the plenaries were offered in full. It’s unclear there will even be another OL Conference the need for $ support for that is so significant.

Maybe Alexander Roman can be a host for an Eastern show on EWTN. That would be awesome.
