I love EWTN and think the programming is very orthodox. I just don’t get the original person’s post. How in the world can you construe EWTN as unorthodox or too secular?

Also, I’ve heard that Catholics are among the cheapest givers out there. It’s no wonder Deacon Bill has to keep going on tv to ask for donations. I’d rather have him asking for money so we don’t have to have secular commercials on the network.

Overall, I think EWTN is a blessing from God, and I would hope most Catholics feel the same way.

OT, I can’t wait for the new series called “Saints Alive”. It looks like it’s going to be really good.🙂

I feel the same way about Joan Bekonvic. I signed up for her Women of Grace magazine and I was inundated with requests for charity contributions, throught snail mail and even over the phone.
I had the same experience. I felt like I was being hounded to make a donation ALL THE TIME.

That caught me off guard as well. I’m assuming that he was describing a certain show that he dislikes that happens to have a woman teaching scripture to a man, and that he is not saying that he doesn’t like the idea of women teaching scripture in general.
Im guessing he was referring to Mother Angelica herself? She is/was always teaching from the scriptures. 🤷

  1. The Raymond Arroyo and Laura Ingrham Show
  2. Jonette B. and father I forget his name show
  3. The Raddix and Brother Leo show. The kids in the background are just props
  4. GK chester and what ever message they’re trying to get across not all of us enjoy watching a huge actor with a fake musache mumble woth a BAD english accent. This show is mainly about the producer, director. I’ll be the first to tell you I’m not a philopher.
  5. Crossing the Goal. I just don’t get it.
I could go on but I think you get the point.
PS
Then along comes Deacon Bill asking for donations because they’re 800k in the red. Maybe they should scale down their sets wardrobe.
I am so sorry you see it that way, I am truely blessed by this programing and I’m protestant (but seriously feeling Catholic) My husband too is very drawn to Crossing the Goal as a men’s ministry. It calls men to be what God has called them to be. I’m especially blessed by Jonette B.'s show, Women of Grace.(sp?) These shows help me live a more pure life, encouraging me in my faith and helping me see needs of others. HOW can be WRONG?! I’m sure if your mind is “set” in this frame there will be no convincing you, but for people to grow in faith and love for Jesus, trying to become more holy can’t be wrong. I hope you will consider the witness of others as you think about this.

Blessings to you on you own journey of faith,
mlz

Just a word of “caution” to my brothers and sisters in Christ. When God is doing a great thing (EWTN) be very aware that this is something the enemy of our souls ISN’T happy with and will do all he can to pull us apart and separate us in disunity. All the more is necessary to stand firm in faith together against this. I realize this is my opinion, but I’ve seen this happen more than once in my faith walk and am concerned. Please prayerfully consider this and pray for EWTN. There is some “attack” going on, and it ISN’T from the Lord.

Thank you for listening.
His rich blessing on all you dear family in Jesus,
mlz

I don’t know if Catholics are among the cheapest. I do believe that many Catholics have become their own enemies. You see, it is one thing to be angry and it is another to do harm to yourself because you’re angry.

Catholics may have many reasons to be angry. However, we have fallen into the same trap as the rest of society. When we get angry, we become resentlful and punitive. The way that American Catholics punish is by holding on to the purse strings. It’s a very Capitalist and secularist expression of anger, which is actually a violation of Canon Law. Catholics who have the mans may not withhold donations from Catholic apostolates. Even though it’s no longer on the list of Commandments of the Church, it’s still in the Code of Canon Law of 1983.

We have embraced secularism. What’s a hoot is that we use it to combat secularism. Everytime we think that the Church, the diocese or a certain religious order or organization is embracing secularism, what do we do? We do exactly what secularism teaches. We go for the almighty dollar and we hold back on it as a means to punish. In the end, it may not really change anything. I’ve known ministries, parishes and organizations that have chosen to close than be bullied by those who withhold their donations.

I don’t know if it’s that Catholics are cheap. I believe that many are resentful and this is not a good thing. There is a healthy kind of anger that expresses itself with great humilty, kindness and good manners. There is an unhealthy kind of anger that seeks to punish. Too often, I think we fall into the latter category and that’s why we hold back on donations.

I find EWTN is becoming too secular for me. Especially the host and hostess. seems to me they use their shows to plug their own personal agenda without any regard to Catholic teachings. They seem to be straying more and more!
I don’t see that. EWTN is, in my opinion a huge blessing to the church. I know of no one there that strays from the churches’s doctrine.
Fr. Mitch, Fr. Mark, Fr. Benedict, Marcus Grodi etc. are all top notch. Not to mention Mother Angelica, who started it all.

I think that secularism is everywhere in the minds of the people everywhere. many cannot even identify it. Today at Mass, i heard this prayer, “that all students grow in knowledge of earthly things and God also.” I was confused about this.

I am not cheap…I’m poor!!

No, he’s not referring to Mother Angelica, though she did teach Scripture in her early years and on her Live program.

It’s another Sister from another Order who has a Scripture teaching program. Her name is Sister Joan (I think). Can’t remember her last name.

I was also trying to remember the name of the priest who is on Johnette Benkovic’s program, ‘Women of Grace’. He is Father Edmund Sylvia (I knew he had a woman’s last name :o 😛 ).

I haven’t read all the posts in this thread, so please excuse me if I’m repeating something.🤷

I love the EWTN coverage of the Pope’s live broadcasts – of his Apostolic visits, seasonal masses, etc. If one watches them live, one receives his blessing (via t.v. or radio broadcasts). For example, the recent WYD was like a retreat for me. I stayed up to catch live broadcasts in the wee small hours, my time. I saw most of the events and was very inspired. I’m looking forward to EWTN’s coverage of his trip to Germany, and other journeys as well as the holy seasons’ broadcasts.👍 Fr. Mitch Pacwa has a very informative show on Tuesday eve’s called “Threshold of Hope” where he discusses the encyclicals of Blessed Pope John Paul II. I love the EWTN movies about saints. The homilies in their masses are top notch.
I feel there is a definite connection with St. Clare, patroness saint of television, and Mother Angelica’s Poor Clares.

If the OP has shows he/she doesn’t like, that’s no reason to make a sweeping put-down about the entire network…EWTN is a blessing, for heaven’s sake!😉

I love EWTN! Both the radio shows and television shows. The only program I have found that I don’t like/can’t watch is The World Over. And that is just because the host rubs me the wrong way, not because I dislike the content.
I watch “The World Over” it has the best news on TV but I certainly can understand Mrs. V. sentiment. Aroyo can be just a tad bit to much.

Do not get me wrong. I like Raymond Aroyo also. He is a bit like a family friend in my mind. He can be a be a tad to much, but his good qualities certainly out weight that.

Greetings all,

I would not say EWTN has gotten more secular; however, I would say there have been changes to a more liberal or fundamentalist stance. This can be evidenced in the current programming. For example, shows like “Crossing the Goal” comes across more like it belongs on the PTL network than EWTN.

There have also been a “vanishing” of programs that were unapologetically Catholic; such as The Roman Forum with Dr. Marra; all of Fr. Rutler’s early series, (I also enjoy his current series, “Christ in the City”)- but you should have seen some of his earlier programs- WOW! And there are quite a few other series that have been lost to the years that I, unfortunately, cannot recall the titles of after 20 years. 😃

I still watch EWTN but I don’t think the network has been the same since Mother Angelica suffered that aneurism and others, (I believe more liberal or less orthodox- however you want to say it), took over control of the network. In fact, the only shows I watch are Sunday Night Live with Fr. Groeshel; Fr. Rutler’s “Christ in the City” and the vintage programs with Mother Angelica- the rest of them leave me cold.

Oremus pro invicem,

Sean C. :knight2:
You may feel that way for yourself, but I assure you that EWTN in many of the shows you aren’t as comfortable with are tremendous evangelical outreaches to those outside the Catholic faith and bringing many into Holy Mother Church.🙂

Blessings in Him,

I believe that you must put things in their context.

Let’s try to look at some realities.

We cannot make any apostolate into our image and likeness. There are going to be things that you like and I don’t and the other way around.

Even though EWTN is owned and operated by a secular corporation, it’s philosophy and mission statement remains very Franciscan. Franciscans have never been known for proselytizing or trying to convert non-Catholics. That’s not why we were founded nor what we do. That’s the mission of the Dominican Order. Franciscans were founded to convert Catholics. When Mother founded the network, she was targeting Catholics, not non-Catholics. Even when she brought in “The Journey Home” she said that she wanted the program to highlight a convert for the benefit of those Catholics who were considering leaving the faith or had fallen away. She was not deliberately targeting Protestants. The way that we Franciscans see it is that if it happens, Glory to God, if it does not happen, then it’s not meant to be at this time. Another instrument will come around.

The current government of EWTN is made up of men and women from many walks of life and many parts of the Church. They are going to bring with them a greater assortment of interests and projects. When Mother and the nuns ran the network alone, there was no diversity or variety, because all of them were in the same culture. That’s not the case today. The leaders are not nuns who live in the same house, share the same history, the same culture and follow the same superior. These leaders a secular men and women from many parts of the Church. This is going to be reflected in the network.

All that being said, the network is very Catholic and very faithful to the Holy See, to the USCCB and to the original Franciscan vision. I have not seen anything that one can say, “not Catholic enough.”

If EWTN is anything it’s boring but then again I suffer from an over developed fantasy life. 😃

No, they do have some programs that I find boring, because there is too much talking. One that particularly bores me is “The Journey Home”. There is an absence of action and enthusiasm in the dialogue, unlike other talk shows. I like “Life on the Rock”. Fr. Mark and Mr. Barry are very funny and play off each other. They keep the conversation with their guests moving at a quick pace.

Fr. Benedict is also very animated. I’ve known him since I was a very young man. He has always been a genius and a nutjob. I say that with the greatest fraternal affection. Franciscans love him very much, but he’s always been a male version of Auntie Mame. He is very funny and at the same time very intelligent and very orthodox. He’s also a very loving man.

I love Fr. Mitch, because he’s very scholarly. I’m a very curious person and I really enjoy the background information. When he covers different thoelogical and pastoral writings, he works a lot with background information.
