Actually, I don’t think you need to leave the RCC to better study the scriptures. I just thought that the audacity of the op should not be countenanced. I agree that the polititians you mentioned should be excluded from fellowship.
Catholics, like myself who left the church were doing it because they thought they were following Christ through the scriptures. When you consider the many Catholics that were marginal Christians not to mention Catholics you can see why. This includes certain (not all) priests. The RCC has changed dramatically since I was 15 and if the church had been what it is now I may have never left but that wasn’t the case then.
I was disappointed in the lack of emphasis on teaching when I was a teenager, as it seemed more like just do what I say… Now, there’s an explosion of learning of the faithful, those who desire to learn.

If the water is fine for you, why don’t you come back, then?

The point is I don’t know how fine the water is. Though I’m leaning towards it.

Well, it does have the ultimate Lifeguard, preventing those who want to pee in the pool from messing it up. Considering the Lifeguard, it is okay to fall in or dive in. If you lean far enough, you fall in. You may look better coming off the board with a nice dive… doesn’t have to be perfect though. Ultimately, you have your own decision to swim there or not, can lay by the pool in the lounge chair, dip your toes in the water, and make your own determination. This pool has the best training capability for those who want to swim at the next level. At some point, though, the Lifeguard closes the pool and determines who’s on the swim team.

Ultimately its down to this I have a family. My wife is against the Church because Catholics that she knows don’t live for christ. Our children know the scriptures and are very involved in our non Catholic church and have an understanding of a relationship with God. Moving from that to the Catholic church would be problematic for them. Going from an environment were they are surrounded by people who love God and encourage each other and know scripture to an environment where people may know the liturgy and some scripture but never read the bible through and may be lukewarm in their faith is an issue. It was the issue I dealt with as a Catholic child. I would hate to have them fall away from the Lord for the confusion of it. I know I can train them. But there is always that fear. My family loves God and we have nightly devotions they will start getting confused when we start the prayers to the saints and Catholic School where the alter boys may not be the nicest kid on the block.

It is difficult to separate the official teachings of the Church from the actions and behaviors of Catholics. People who are Catholics can be extremely devout and understand and live the faith, and on the other end of the same pew someone who doesn’t have a clue and doesn’t live the faith at all… I recommend reading the Catechism, and making sure that what you’re teaching them comes from the Church teachings, even if they don’t understand where it comes from yet. The Catechism makes the Bible come alive. This way, they will have the correct interpretations and teachings. It’s wonderful to love Jesus. We also must know who He is as we develop in our walk and friendship with Him. St. Jerome told us that ignorance of the Bible is ignorance of Christ. The official Church teachings will help keep the teachings of Scripture in line with what the Apostles taught so that your children know more truth about the Christ that they have come to love.

Other considerations at some point are also that through the Apostolic Succession in the Church, the Sacraments of Confirmation, Reconciliation, and especially Communion help us to become closer to Christ. Apostolic Succession gives us valid Bishops which are the successors of the Apostles, and with valid Bishops, the Church can have a valid Priesthood. Through Confirmation, the Holy Spirit comes more into my life. Through reconciliation, the sins are forgiven just as Christ gave that power to His Apostles, and through the Eucharist I am bonded with Christ’s real and true Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity which is incomparable. It all depends on the faith of one receiving, though. Just as many touched Christ’s garment and nothing happened, the hemorrhaging woman touched His garment with expectant faith and was healed. The Beautiful realities found in Christ’s Church are available nowhere else, though must be received in faith. Those without faith will walk out of the greatest opportunity given to mankind, and continue being as they were. Others walk out strengthened and bonded with our Lord. It’s an incomparable thing, which I eagerly receive and adore. The Eucharist has brought my wife and I together much stronger and made us a stronger couple, and strengthened our walk with God. There’s nothing else that even compares with God’s presence in our lives that comes through the Eucharist.
