*Exactly* three persons in one God?

I can’t imagine why you would question revelation in the Bible and the 2000 year tradition of the Church. Certainly, no human being can completely explain the Trinity.

What you may overlook is the belief that there is only one God. The idea of an infinite God trumps any worry about this matter. Infinity has been described mathematically as “everything and more” – certainly more than you or I can imagine.

In heaven, we will be in perfect ecstasy (no drugs) and this question will be forgotten. We will be enthralled eternally by the mere encounter with even one of the three persons of the Triune Godhead. We will meet Jesus face to face.

There is certainly nothing to suggest otherwise and, as Jesus is Truth, He would have told us so.

HawkEye, Right on, Brother. It’s all in the Apostle’s Creed…or if you have the Nicine Creed handy…that’ll work too!

Racer X:
I submitted this to the AAA forum a few days ago but it hasn’t shown up there.

Does the Church teach that there are three and only three persons within the one God? Or do we only say that Father, Son and Holy Spirit are the three persons which have been revealed to the Church but leave open the question of whether there are more?

I would consider it a highly conceited position to assume that God has revealed Himself fully (in any of His aspects) to us mortals unless He has explicitly told us that He has done so.
The answer is very simple.

Human is a triune being with body, soul, and spirit.

Human was copied from the likeness and image of God.

Therefore God is three in “Persons” but one God in nature.

There is simply no reason for God to hide the true number of persons of the Holy Trinity from us. Thus, we should take Jesus’ word that we should baptize in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

That is all there is to it and all we need to know.

Going along with Racer’s question,

If there were other intelligent sentient beings on another planet, Jesus Christ would be their Redeemer as well. Since Christ is God incarnate and Christ is the Savior of the world (not just our world), any other intelligent being would be Redeemed by Him alone. God is Triune, that is His nature. There can be no more, no less. So He has revealed to His Church.

Does the Church ever explicitly say that my computer is not the body of Christ? Does the Church ever explicitly say that the tree outside my window is not God? Does the Church ever say I can’t jump up in the middle of the homily and start singing Michael Jackson? The Church isn’t about defining what is ONLY, she is about defining what IS. It has been revealed that bread and wine become the body of Christ. No need to explain that ONLY bread and wine do, and that my car does not. See what I’m saying? There’s a whole bunch of teachings within the Church that have not been officially promulgated. But when the bishops teach in union with each other and the pope, it is validly Church teaching.
