'Exorcist’ author, William Peter Blatty, to sue Georgetown University in Catholic court

Good for William Peter Blatty! I hope he wins so another Catholic in Name university can be publically stripped of the title of Catholic University which they so thoughtlessly misused!

I hope this happens across the world to all hospitals, adoption agencies and other organizations that claim to represent Catholics and then behave like heretics!

IMHO, it’s not a question of whether Mr. Blatty has more standing than any other Catholic. I’m sure he’d be the first one to say he doesn’t. …

That’s quite a stretch. To gain standing, he has to show he is harmed much more than the average Catholic.

I mean, I don’t think Mr. Blatty thinks he has *more *standing than any other Catholic. But I don’t think he has any *less *standing, either. He just happens to be taking the initiative, same as any other Catholic who had both the means and the desire to defend our freedom could. Rosa Parks didn’t have any *more *standing to protest segregation than any other African-American, but neither did she have any less. She took the initiative, and look what she was able to accomplish.

The author who turned Georgetown University into a horror scene in “The Exorcist” plans to sue the school in church court, charging that his alma mater has strayed so far from church doctrine that it should no longer call itself Catholic.

She didn’t sue; she protested an unjust law. She purposely violated the law so she would get arrested to challenge it in court. She had an advocacy group behind her. In fact, they found her to be the defendant. When you sue, you are the plaintiff, so the two situations are not the same thing.

How does he have any more standing than other Catholics?

Standing is different at canon law. You don’t need to prove meticulously that you have standing. Only if it is without doubt that a person lacks legitimate personal standing in a trial can a suit be rejected. And I doubt a canon law judge is going to employ leaps of legal logic to keep his docket thin. Not in important, public cases.

The Jesuits have no control over Georgetown anymore. It is governed by a lay board. Even if the clergy wanted to make changes, they could not, because it is out of their hands now.

More standing than what, or who? How does that give him more than, say, the average Catholic?

He is also an alumni of Georgetown and so are the others who signed his petition. I believe being a Catholic alum of Georgetown gives him some standing to criticize the direction of the university. Especially, as all alumni know, universities deluge you with requests of monetary support.

In general, powerful alumni and boosters wield quite a bit of influence in the academic world. This isn’t unusual really.

Somewhat off topic-- when I lived in DC in the 90s I used to attend daily Mass at the Georgetown chapel. During the consecration all in attendance were invited to stand around the altar. Thought that was somewhat of an abuse. It was actually surreal. You would have like 10 people standing by the altar and nobody sitting in the pews
