“Oh and another thought. It’s one thing to be compassionate. But it’s also ok to have expectations.”
You said a mouthful! My husband and I have encouraged everyone in the family to help this poor woman. Instead of talking about her behind her back when she leaves, reach out to her. Explain expectations to her. They think that reaching out to her would be a waste of time and that we are wrong to think that we are “better than her.” I know I’ve made better choices in my life, but I do not think that I am a better human being in comparison to anyone. I recently saw my sister-in-law at a funeral and she ignored me. So, I purposely walked up to her and asked her how she and her children are doing this school year. She immediately launched into a story about a fight she had with the father of one of her children (three different fathers of six children and only one marriage out of the three). It was embarrassing to stand there with her as she loudly procIaimed that her child’s father is nothing but a “cash cow” and other explicit words. But I will never give up on being kind to her when I see her. I will always reach out to her and be that example of kindness, even when she makes fun of my kindness. But after eight years, Christmas Day is finally about Christ - my husband and I are excited about attending Mass on Christmas day and starting a new tradition with our children this year!!
