Today, parishes are fortunately bringing in younger and younger people…
Oh, I couldn’t disagree more…or perhaps agreeing with how literal you mean “younger and younger.” Yes, you’ve got the Sunday school and K-8 kids and families and LifeTeen, but ater that…? It’s like there’s a concerted effort to EXCLUDE singles from the Eucharist and from the life of local parish communities. Single Catholics are invisible. Single Catholics don’t exist in the Church except as a “vocation” and the lies we tell singles that there’s someone out there for them and just be patient and keep praying.
For the rare Catholic parish that does have a “singles” group, there seems to be a “cut-off” age, whether 21 or 25 or 30 or 35 or whatever. Or, at the Catholic churches I have tried to get involved in, a
minimum age of 35 or 36, only to find out when I go there it’s a group of senior citizens. Yeah, like I’m really going to have a lot in common with retirees who have grown kids older than me…that’s what passes for “singles” groups at a lot of Catholic parishes. I’m not exaggerating. (I won’t name parishes publicly, but if you’re curious for proof, PM me for the name of the parish and number to call if you don’t believe me.)
Logic would dictate that if there are younger priests coming into the parishes, 20’s, 30’s range, that they might at least have some appreciation for the singles in their parish, but unfortunately, that’s not the case at all.
I absolutely understand Church teachings and I strive for the fullness provided by the One, Catholic, Holy, and Apostolic Church, and I absolutely know about how participating in the sacraments will bring a more fruitful relationship with Jesus. (It’s a myth that “fallen away Catholics” are necessarily ignorant of it.) However, I also know all too well what it’s like to constantly be at the “back seat of the bus” any time I go the church. If the people dispensing the Lord’s Supper don’t want me there, I can take the hint. (And apparently, a lot of people already have, or else this wouldn’t be a thread.)
