Family synod: Married couple ask Pope to clear up ‘confusion’ on contraception

I was talking to a couple of priest today and one of them quoted St. Thomas Aquinas saying “we know infinitely less about God then we know of Him”, which to me means God still has things for us to learn or ways to see clearer.

I can never understand when people think we should live, understand, or see things the same way as we did 2000 years ago or when some of these things were decided. The world has evolved and people grow. Our understanding grows.

Both the priest told me yes, it is possible that there could be changes on this issue. I was basically called a liar the last time said this, but I will say it again. My husband wanted only two children, but we compromised on three. I discussed with my priest that we didn’t want anymore children and we would be using ABC. He told me that I has answer God calling for being open to children and that we needed to follow our conscious.

We send our children to Catholic school so they can live their faith day in and day out and we sacrifice to do so. That is how we honor God.

Humanae Vitae was written in the sixties. Hardly 2000 years agoope Pious VI was so prescient in what he wrote of the ramifications of using ABC. Higher divorce,increased promiscuity,increase in abortion,SSA.Pretty much everything we are living todayIf you haven’t read it,I highly recommend it.I only studied recently and I am in my early 60’s.Personally,I had a lot of shoulda coulda woulda regrets after realizing I chose to plan my family n my terms.I have also witnessed many young families within my parish who adhere to Church Teachings within their marriage. The couples are very connected and in tune with each other,I admire and really regret not having lived my childbearing years in the same manner.

Jim, thanks, I do know this. But clem456’s statement was a little hard to swallow. Sort of like saying that, even though I removed the engine from my car, you should not stand in front of it in case it starts up and runs you over.

While I agree that there are times that getting pregnant does equate with being run over by a car …

If we don’t believe that our private sexual behaviours have any bearing on ‘the good of our species’ or have any divine ends… we could actually justify just about anything. Masturbation, sodomy, beastiality (with the beasts approval). Conforming our sexual behaviours to a common standard actually does mean something tangible to the common good and to the Communion of Saints we belong to.

I know what the Church is, and actually it is Christ who is alive in the Church, not the Church in Christ, as the Church with ALL its teachings, especially over time, is not the same as the time of Christ.

I think you’ve hit on the point. Whether a couple finishes the correct way each time doesn’t really matter to the “good of the species”. The Divine end? I don’t know. BUT, the Church has to have the rule in place that every act has to end the right way so that those things you mentioned are never in play. The unitive and procreate rule, even for a couple that can’t procreate, is there in some ways to hold the line against other practices…

So in some cases then, for Catholics, the use of ABC would not be a mortal sin, provided they got permission from their priest?

I don’t see where there is any confusion on contraception. The Catechism of the Catholic says it is a mortal sin. The Pope wrote the article Humane Vita, Every organization has its laws. Break the law and you are out. Contraception is against the Natural Law. Jump out of an airplane without a parachute and you are going against the Natural Law.
