I think that is a good idea. We should start with closing all the US military bases there. Perhaps its time Europe defended themselves.

Exactly, that’s one of the things that Independence from America would involve.

Do you think that the youth in Europe would be up for joining the military? I mean, if Europe became independent (as we both agree should happen) then wouldn’t there be a greater burden among the French, Germans, etc. to build up their armed forces? What is the state of the youth in Europe these days in terms of enthusiasm for the military? Here in America you still have some enthusiasm - much more than in the 1970’s which was really a low point. Does Europe have the will to defend its interests and way of life?

Spoken like colonial masters throughout the ages! 😃

To Broomwaggon.
Please be careful with this. The EDL are very much a bunch of violent, ignorant thugs, who hate anyone that isn’t White and “British”. It would seem that they are not very different from the BNP. I saw one interview a while back with a person claimin to be EDL, who was spouting such horrible stuff about “them muslamics”. - I kid you not. THAT is the EDL, they will, if they can, use the current racial tensions in the UK as a platform to start a race war with the ultimate intentions of “sending them all back to their country”. (in this context “them” would mean; black people, Asian people, Jewish people, come to think of it ALL non pure Anglo-Saxons.)
It’s one thing for angry people to protest against extremist-jihadist-corruptions of Islam, it’s another thing altogether to defend or support the EDL.
I don’t think one can support or even defend such people on here with a catholic conscience. It would be AS BAD as defending g the jihadists who butchered that poor soldier.
(May God grant him eternal rest and comfort his family.)
Also from what I’ve seen on tv, and read In the news, our media are failing to distinguish between the SMALL minority of Muslims who support extremist ideas, and the VAST MAJORITY of British Muslims who hate terrorism as much as everyone else.

God bless and pray for peace.

Paul
I would be careful about talking about a “small” minority of violent men. The IRA is a small minority of Irishmen, and they have not enjoyed as much sympathy among the majority of Irishmen since 1922 as Al Qaeda enjoys among Muslims today. And one should remember that the gap in the worldviews of Catholics and Protestants is, though significant, is far narrower than those between the ordinary Britain and a practicing Muslim.

You lost me, Kaninchen. Keep in mind you’re talking to a good ol’ American boy who is maybe not as sophisticated as those across the pond.

Colonial masters have a grand tradition of generating ‘arguments’ as to why their ‘subjects’ would be unable to survive without them - like the idea that poor, benighted, weak Europeans would be incapable of developing military instincts (we are talking about a continent with a very long and unsurpassed history of annihilating people, by the way).

Yes, of course, no longer being a colony of the US might involve difficulties but growing up is a difficult business.

Oh - I get it - thanks for clarifying. Let’s hope that if Europe does become “independent” it does not rediscover is ability to annihilate people. 😃

Unlikely, mind you with unemployment sitting at a conservative 20% across the EU there may be a mad rush to join as this has especially hit the youth. What way of life, the EU has at its core the destruction of the way of life for all its members.

I didn’t know the EDL were in favour of state control of the means of production, distribution and exchange.

The things you learn on CAF, amazing.
Glad you learning something, and that it is amazing is even more satisfying.

Europeans consider themselves American colonies? No wonder people react so harshly in these Europe-related threads. I had no idea we were dealing with inferiority complexes. 😉

As you were saying to the Memsahib only the other day when you were sitting on the porch taking tiffin (or whatever the terms are in the US version of the Raj).

Ill have to admit that one went right over my head!-🙂

I gotta say I didn’t get it either.
I was playing with ideas in response to something said but you probably do need to have grown up with ‘The Far Pavilions’, ‘A Passage To India’ or, even, ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ to see the pictures.

I was imagining rlg94086 as, perhaps, a character from Downton Abbey transported to, say, a ‘hill station’ like Simla (from where the ‘Raj’ - the British Empire in India - was run when Delhi got just too hot), the ‘Memsahib’ would be his wife, of course, with him as the ‘Sahib’. They would be ‘taking tiffin’ (a light meal) out on the porch and rlg94086 would have been commentating on the silly notions held by the natives.

I can picture it all very clearly, Kaninchen!

I guess you missed the winking smiley. Alas, no sense of humor, apparently…

A pale view of hills (as that Japanese Englishman, Kazuo Ishiguro, might put it), a shimmer of heat and the exotic calls of a BBC4 documentary crew doing yet another ‘Great Railway Journeys’ series (or whatever). 😃
