Muslims started to fast which will go ahead for a month. It is the demonstration of trustworthiness of Muslims for faith. Muslims do not eat or drink for about 17 hours nowadays during fast. The fast demonstrate the faithful of Islam and it prove that Islam is very truely religion of God as it is mentioned in Qur’an. Otherwise nothing else could force people to abide so difficulties during fast.

It is mentioned in Qur’an that the fast was ordered for previous Ummah(People of scripture) too. Do Christians or Jews have fast?

What would happen if a Muslim, in a Muslim country, refused to fast at all and sat around eating and drinking in public?

LDS fast one day once a month, to focus more on God, and the money saved on the missed meals goes to care for the needy. An LDS person will also fast to grow closer God other times, such as during a deep times of prayers for help or guidence.

Catholics fast during Lent and can voluntarily fast on Fridays throughout the year or any day of their choosing.

Catholics fast before a feast. Also abstain from meat on Fridays. Some also abstain on Wednesdays. Lent is 40 days of fasting and abstaining before Easter.

Christians similarly have the liturgical season of lent where Christians will fast, abstain, and give alms. It is limited to how much is required of a Catholic, but Catholics will do more penance in the spirit of the season. Yet, we have had saints in the Catholic Church who had taken on severe penances. St. Catherine of Siena never ate food, but would only consume the Holy Eucharist.

The major holiday fast in Judaism is that which occurs on the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur). This holy day is the culmination of the Days of Awe which begin with Rosh Hashanah. It is a 24-hour fast (actually somewhat longer than this) during which no food or drink is allowed, not even brushing one’s teeth. I have observed this fast since I was 10 years old even though I am not Orthodox. While one is supposed to feel the pangs of hunger, fasting alone on Yom Kippur without prayer and reflection is regarded as hollow. There are also a few minor holiday fasts which are observed by Orthodox Jews.

But seriously, how many Christians actually FAST? From all food and drink? Not many I know do. Many will abstain but to do a 25 hour fast such as on Yom Kippur, or a sunrise to sunset fast as in Ramadan? We have gotten rather slack, IMHO. I have much respect for Muslims during Ramadan. They have more spiritual discipline than I do.

A very poor argument. Political activists of all stripes have fasted far longer than that to prove their points, starting with Mahatma Gandhi. 🙂

Also, sorry to be a grammar Nazi, but it’s “truly”. 😛

In defense of all other religious, aren’t you publicly beaten or jailed if you fail to fast? It seems to me that fear drives the fast, not love or genuine belief.

Depends upon the Muslim country, obviously. Some are more secularised than others.

Baha’is fast the last month of our year which is the month of 'Ala (Loftiness). Our month is nineteen days and we abstain from liquids and solid food from sunrise to sunset.
The fast ends with Naw-Ruz at the vernal equinox.

During the Fast we can be aware that there are people without enough to eat and drink each day and that we should consider ways to serve them.

I am always happy that my Muslim friends are fasting and are dedicating themselves.

With all due respect, that proves nothing.

There are some Christians who have fasted for 40 days straight with no food AT ALL. They must be super people of God.

Depends on the Christian group. In Orthodoxy Wednesdays and Fridays are fast days unless specified otherwise. There are at least two major seasons of fasting, lent and nativity. This fasting doesn’t prove however whether or not Orthodoxy is a religion of God any more than Hindu/Buddhist ascetics fasting proves that view correct.

The thing about fasting in Christianity is that it isn’t done under compulsion. You don’t have to fast throughout lent, though it is strongly encouraged that one do so because that ascetic practice leads one away from the world to reliance on God. The fasting rules are not immovable unbreakable laws that the Christian must adhere to. They are guidelines which can be accommodated for those who are not yet strong enough to do the full amount of fasting (I include myself in that).
