Catholics fast during Lent and can voluntarily fast on Fridays throughout the year or any day of their choosing.
We’re only required (with many exceptions) to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. We abstain from meat the Fridays of Lent. Catholic fasting doesn’t require going without food; we are allowed to eat one full meal and two small meals. And all beverages are allowed. That isn’t something I would call penitential at all. Unless Catholics have become so self-indulgent that we can’t go more than a couple of hours without eating a snack or meal.

The purpose of bodily penances is not really about feeling physical distress, but rather a self-reminder of penitence.

Unless you are Muslim, naturally. Food is one thing, but my head shakes as to how those living in Mideastern climates, when Ramadan falls in summer (due to the calendars, it doesn’t always), deal with body dehydration.

I spent a week in Saudi Arabia during Ramadan and that was my observation. The economy became a night time economy with sleeping during the day being common, and “travelling” to avoid the fast.

It that way; I fast daily from 9pm to 5am, but I also have to ‘travel’ to work every day.
What is the relation of “travelling” to the Ramadan fast?

With all due respect, that proves nothing.

There are some Christians who have fasted for 40 days straight with no food AT ALL. They must be super people of God.
And there are people with no religion (or none that was mentioned) who have fasted for that long and longer for reasons of health. There was a man in England who fasted for over 300 days. Water & vitamins - and the supervision of a doctor. He lost a LOT of weight - which was the point of the fast.

Fasting for long or short periods is not a sign that someone is holy, or that a religion or political ideal are correct. I fast for 16+ hours every day - for my health. Of course, I’m asleep for part of that, but I’m still going for a long stretch without food. I drink a LOT of water. 😃

256-There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in taghūt and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing. Al-Baqarah
hasantas,

8:1
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the bounties [of war]. Say, "The [decision concerning] bounties is for Allah and the Messenger.
" So fear Allah and amend that which is between you and obey Allah and His Messenger, if you should be believers.

8:13
That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger
  • indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
8:14
“That [is yours], so taste it.” And indeed for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.

8:39
And fight them until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion, all of it, is for Allah .
And if they cease - then indeed, Allah is Seeing of what they do.

9:30
The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah "; and the Christians say, “The Messiah is the son of Allah .”
That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved [before them].
May Allah destroy them; how are they deluded?

9:31
They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allah , and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary.
And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him.
Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

9:32
They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah refuses except to perfect His light,
although the disbelievers dislike it.

9:33
It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion,
although they who associate others with Allah dislike it.

“No compulsion in religion” you say?
“Allah and His Messenger” = Muhammad

Muslims started to fast which will go ahead for a month. It is the demonstration of trustworthiness of Muslims for faith. Muslims do not eat or drink for about 17 hours nowadays during fast. The fast demonstrate the faithful of Islam and it prove that Islam is very truely religion of God as it is mentioned in Qur’an. Otherwise nothing else could force people to abide so difficulties during fast.

It is mentioned in Qur’an that the fast was ordered for previous Ummah(People of scripture) too. Do Christians or Jews have fast?
We fast during lent , and personally I fast on Ramadan as well

Yes I know it is not fair to talk about crusaders in that case. But it is not use/fair to propose atrocities of ISIS to disprove or attack Islam. That invalid gang firstly harm Islam and Muslims.
The leader of ISIS has a PhD in islamic theology from the University of Baghdad.

Indeed in many Muslim countries there are attempts to portray the Baha’i Faith as a “false sect of Islam” when it is in fact an independent religion… a “free religion” with it’s own Holy Books, sites of pilgrimage, calendar and practices.

Further Baha’is bear no ill will toward Muslims even though many Baha’is over the years have been incarcerated and persecute for their beliefs.

You don’t have to fast if you are travelling. The Jordanian I worked with said, if he drives more than 20 miles, he can eat.
Sounds like a rule that didn’t keep up with modern technology. Twenty miles by foot, horse, camel, or donkey is a lot more work than 20 miles by car!

Have Muslims agreed yet on what should be done in Arctic lands? I’ve read that the northernmost mosque in the world is in Tromsø, Norway. The sun will not set at all in Tromsø during Ramadan. Talk about an intense fast!

Yow!

Conversely, due to the misalignment of the calendars, in the years to come, Ramadan will fall in winter, and the sun would then not rise there! Would they then be exempt from fasting?

From arabnews.com:
JEDDAH: Muslims in the Artic region and northern parts of Norway can follow the fasting hours of Makkah or the nearest Muslim country.
The fasting time was described in a fatwa issued by Islamic scholars in light of very long gap between sunrise and sunset, Norwegian Ambassador Ralph Philly Hansen told local media.

That’s just one fatwa though. Last I heard opinions differed from one cleric to the next. A Scandinavian Muslim colleague of mine once told me that she was instructed to fast according to daylight hours in the nearest locale that actually had a sunset (not specifically the closest Muslim nation). Another American Muslim colleague of mine told me that summer fasting hours in the arctic were fixed at 20 hours. Yet another told me that you should abide by the fasting hours of your home country (in the case of Muslim immigrants to the arctic). I was wondering if the Muslim world has come to a stronger consensus.

It is suitable for Muslims.

16 ¶Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. Matthew 6.
So , just Isa said before that when you pray say the Our Father? Yes ?

Im looking forward to your affirmation my brother in Christ Jesus.👍

Matthew 6 :9

This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,[a]
but deliver us from the evil one.**’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
This reminded me of a Hadit:

“Those who are merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One in the heavens will have mercy upon you.”

Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhi? 1924

Surah Ali Imran 3:8
Our Lord!" (they say), "Let not our hearts deviate now after You have guided us, but grant us mercy from Your Own Presence; for You are the Grantor of bounties without measure.

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. The hypocrites seek a worldly result, wanted to be praised from other people , They will never be rewarded by The Mighty in the hereafter.

This is Hidden Shirk in Islam:
when someone is showing one’s deeds to others or speaking about them in order to gain respect or some other worldly benefit.

Surah az-Zumar 39:65
But it has already been revealed to you, - as it was to those before you, - If you were to join (gods with Allah), truly fruitless will be your work (in life), and you will surely be in the ranks of those who lose (all spiritual good)

Yes. That’s good.

However, hypocrites can also be saved. If they repent and do reparation.

God’s ways are not man’s. We as man, can’t judge whether one being a hypocrite can’t enter Heaven. Only God knows the heart of another person.

We ourselves can be hypocrites at times, but must seek forgiveness.

So Jesus being God and Man, spoke long before 🙂

To Him Be The Glory. For ever and ever. Amen.
