Right, even before I was a Christian I believe that homosexuality goes against natural law…please understand that does not mean that I don’t love my friends who were homosexual or bisexual growing up. God please guide all your children to live chase and Holy lives. In Jesus amen.

Bishop Fulton Sheen

"Christian love bears evil, but it does not tolerate it.

"It does penance for the sins of others, but it is not broadminded about sin.

"The cry for tolerance never induces it to quench its hatred of the evil philosophies that have entered into contest with the Truth.

"It forgives the sinner, and it hates the sin; it is unmerciful to the error in his mind.

"The sinner it will always take back into the bosom of the Mystical Body;
but his lie will never be taken into the treasury of His Wisdom.

"Real love involves real hatred:
whoever has lost the power of moral indignation and the urge to drive the buyers and sellers from the temples has also lost a living, fervent love of Truth.

"Charity, then, is not a mild philosophy of “live and let live”;
it is not a species of sloppy sentiment.

“Charity is the infusion of the Spirit of God,
which makes us love the beautiful and hate the morally ugly.”

Though I’m not certain, it’s likely he just meant for the person to leave the thread.

I would urge members to discuss the issue not other members. More often than not, threads become toxic when we start pretending we know complete strangers as if we’ve know them all our lives.

If I can just comment on the video as a whole.

I am surprised that Catholic priests can give such frank personal assessments of the Pope.

Fr. Martin was critical of Pope Francis handling of sexual abuse scandals for instance.

The interviewer reinforces a divide in the Church between traditionalists and progressives. And Father Martin too seems happy with it. Arent these kinds of interviews working against Church Unity ? Would father martin be happier to be known as a Progressive Catholic than just Catholic?
That is an excellent analysis, @goodcatholic. While many participants of this discussion, myself included, got sidetracked by Fr. Martin’s reputation, either attacking or defending it, or just worrying about it, you actually thought about and commented on the interview.

The thread title, based on CNN’s headline, would lead one to assume that homophobia was of central importance to the video. It wasn’t. CNN exploited the hot-button appeal of the word in order to spice up the headline.

It’s interesting how the interview evolves. Ms. Amanpour and Fr. Martin begin by looking back on the first 5 years of Francis’ papacy. Within the first 90 seconds, Fr. Martin has introduced the “us vs. them” world view, as Pope Francis vs. the traditionalists. Ms. Amanpour briefly acknowledges this point. She then launches into a series of well-rehearsed statements about the sexual abuse scandal, and accuses Pope Francis of poorly handling it. Fr. Martin seems flummoxed by this, or at any rate has very little to say in defense of Pope Francis or the Church.

Ms. Amanpour then directs the conversation to Fr. Martin’s cause, and his book. The “us vs. them” language appears over and over throughout the remainder of the interview.
Arent these kinds of interviews working against Church Unity ?
You got that right.

Has Fr. Martin ever mentioned the need to be chaste/celibate for those with same-sex attraction? This tidbit of info always seems to be missing from articles where he’s the topic of discussion. Has he said it and no one bothered reporting it?

My mother always said if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.

Well, count me among the vile traditionalists who support the church’s teachings! I find it incredibly uncharitable that he would say this about Catholics that support the Church’s teachings on this matter. The Catholic Church’s teachings on this are far more charitable than most other churches. He is intent on altering those teachings, I think if Mr. Martin can’t submit himself to those teachings he should resign the priesthood.
