If you are going to take it to mean “anyone”, then you should call no one father. What do you call your father?
** I am a Muslim. My prophet did not prohibit me to call any one as my father on this earth. It was your God (Jesus) who had told you something and you are disobeying it. So, was it a mistake of Jesus or he never said such a thing. or you are disobedient???

You need to correct your system. As per bibleNT, you should never call any one your father on the earth. The question remains.**

Matthew 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

Should Catholics be using the term “father” for the priests or the pope?
One must know the difference between earthly fathers and The Heavenly Father.

It’s a no-brainer.

playing semantics:rolleyes:

The bible clearly says “father”.

Matthew 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
Did you even read the article? Do you want an answer, or did you just come here to find fault?

In Jesus’ day, there were various schools of Rabbi’s. It was customary to brag about who your “father” was, just as Paul often did. He grew up at the feet of Gamaliel, and was one of his best students/proteges. Jesus was saying, don’t pride yourself on who taught you in the faith. Don’t make segregations and rivalries based upon your spiritual formation. Paul ran into this with the Galatians, who were clicking up, saying “I am of Paul” or “I was baptized by Cephas”, etc. Jesus was trying to show that this factiousness is contrary to what He wants.

If Paul thought it meant what you think it meant, he would not have called himself a spiritual father!

EGAD! We’ve been caught! Catholics Run! They know our secret! Like its been said did you want a proper discourse, a chance to review the answer given, or are you just doing a drive by posting of your opinion have no real interest in an open conversation. If not hello and good by and I pray you have a blessed Holy Week. 🙂

Many verses from the Apostles show that it is clearly alright to call other men father. The point of the passage is that we are not to elevate them to the status of the Heavenly Father.

**1 Cor. 4:15 - Paul writes, “I became your father in Christ Jesus.”

1 Cor. 4:17 - Paul calls Bishop Timothy a beloved and faithful “child” in the Lord.

2 Cor. 12:14 - Paul describes his role as parent over his “children” the Corinthians.

Phil. 2:22 - Paul calls Timothy’s service to him as a son serves a “father.”

1 Thess. 2:11- Paul compares the Church elders’ ministry to the people like a father with his children.

1 Tim. 1:2,18; 2 Tim. 1:2-3 - Paul calls Timothy his true “child” in the faith and his son.

Titus 1:4 - Paul calls Titus his true “child” in a common faith. Priests are our spiritual fathers in the family of God.

Philemon 10 - Paul says he has become the “father” of Onesimus. **

Now, as Planten is going to revisit this thread and let us know exactly what he thinks of St. Paul, here are some other saints agreeing:

**Heb. 12:7,9 - emphasizes our earthly “fathers.” But these are not just biological but also spiritual (the priests of the Church).

1 Peter 5:13 - Peter refers to himself as father by calling Mark his “son.”

1 John 2:1,13,14 - John calls the elders of the Church “fathers.”

1 John 2:1,18,28; 3:18; 5:21; 3 John 4 - John calls members of the Church “children.”

1 Macc. 2:65 - Mattathias the priest tells his sons that Simeon will be their “father.” **

There we go. No need to change the doctrine of the Holy Apostolic Church, guess we were doing things the right way all along.

It appears you are either not reading or understanding the posts that have answered this question.

First we have the verse that says “Call no man father”, then in several places in the bible( which has been pointed out) we see that the Apostles themselves and others call someone “father”. Does this not make you think that maybe you are misunderstanding the “meaning” behind the verse? If the use of the word “father” is forbidden, then why is it used in the bible?

The first problem is that although Jesus seems to prohibit the use of the term “teacher,” in Matthew 28:19–20, Christ himself appointed certain men to be teachers in his Church: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations . . . teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Paul speaks of his commission as a teacher: “For this I was appointed a preacher and apostle . . . a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth” (1 Tim. 2:7); “For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher” (2 Tim. 1:11). He also reminds us that the Church has an office of teacher: “God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers” (1 Cor. 12:28); and “his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers” (Eph. 4:11). There is no doubt that Paul was not violating Christ’s teaching in Matthew 23 by referring so often to others as “teachers.”

Jesus criticized Jewish leaders who love “the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues, and salutations in the market places, and being called ‘rabbi’ by men” (Matt. 23:6–7). His admonition here is a response to the Pharisees’ proud hearts and their g.asping after marks of status and prestige.

He was using hyperbole (exaggeration to make a point) to show the scribes and Pharisees how sinful and proud they were for not looking humbly to God as the source of all authority and fatherhood and teaching, and instead setting themselves up as the ultimate authorities, father figures, and teachers.

Now when the American Revolution ended, they elected the first president, George Washington who became know as “The Father of Our Country”, I might also remind you that there were no Catholics in the early days of the U.S… So all the Protestants had no problem using the word “Father”

This is simply one of the more brainless objections to the True Faith of Catholicism. It is a hoary and easily dismissed criticism which has been dealt with dozens if not hundreds of times on these fora.
There are much more challenging and button-pushing issues that the OP could bring up,such as our putative “worship” of Mary. Any bets that the OP will ignore all explanations and challenges presented to him/her and just repeating her mantra.Another Non-Catholic Christian who interprets the Bible literally except of course for John 6 and all the other “Catholic” parts.

So intelligent, yet you can not defend or debate your own threads.

Let me guess, you did not start college till 35 because you are so smart, you had MIT, Yale and Harvard fighting for you right? I mean, anyone who waits till 35 to go to college must have an intelligent reason for waiting so long.

Wait, you were so smart you tested out of years of med school and became a doctor by the time you were 18 right? Decided to go back at 35 since you missed those “college days”?

Defend yourself if you want to debate something. Your true intelligence is begining to show.

Typical fundamentalist “debate”.Make an absurd claim, ignore all apologetics which demolish the contention.Refuse to debate.Leave the thread-start another "proving"that Catholicism is “unbiblical”.Repeat process ad nauseum. In the process become a joke whose true agenda of calumny and slander becomes evermore apparent.Do they learn this specious argumentation in a class?

Waste of time.

Lightweight.

Read the earlier posts. You misunderstand what the prohibition means.

Maybe we should start vetting these people so we can have some intelligent dialog.

It is clear that the original poster does not understand the bible verse. That is not all that important as a fact. What is germaine is that there have been some good informed responses. Many people might read a thread like this without responding. It is important that Catholics responded effectively so that those who only read the thread get solid information.

It is always an error to take a single verse and attempt to use it as a stand alone. The use of a numbering system in the Bible is a relatively new invention. Robert Estienne of France developed the system in the early 1500’s. Great for locating parts, but it does tend to lead people to fracture chapters and take thoughts out of context.

If I ask (and I do ask) the original poster to cite for me both the verse preceding and following the verse of Matthew 23:9. I am sure they cannot do so. At least not without having to do a web search or opening a Bible.

Post #6 was well done 👍

God bless

This is a silly discussion. The term Father as Jesus refers to in the scriptures is THE FATHER, meaning THE LORD, such as the Romans used for Caesar.

The fact is that the Jews had the term father in their vocabulary, not only for their biological fathers, but also for the patriarchs. The term “patriarch” itself means father.

Along with that, there is a universal tradition of calling a leader, Father, Master, or Teacher. This in no way equates with THE FATHER or THE LORD.

Priests are not the only leaders in Catholic tradition called Father. Superiors of religious communities were always called Abbot, which means Abba or Father. Most of them were not ordained. They were lay brothers. The title described the individual’s role in the monastic community. He was the father or protector of his brothers. When priets joined religous communities many became superiors. They became Father or Abbot. Later the term was taken outside the cloister into the diocese and diocesan priests came to be called Father some time between 1800 and today.

Prior to this, diocesan priests were called Mr and religious superiors were called Father or Rev. Father.

To avoid all the confusion, the Church organized the titles. Today, Father is a priest, an Eastern deacon, or a religious superior.

In my community we call our founder, our Holy Father Francis. Francis was not a priest or a Byzantine deacon. He was a lay brother. Many thought he was a deacon, because he was called Father by the brothers. Recent studies in Francisan history suggest that he may not have been a deacon at all, but a licensed preacher.

This is one example of how customs begin without any intention to violate the Lord’s command.

I hope this helps.

Fraternally,

JR 🙂

AsSalum o Aleikum,
you have jumped in on what you have learned in many other threads. Why this is not a thread about associating partners with Allah.

We have 99 attributes of Allah indeed they are the attributes of what a father longs to be for his child.

You understand the context of the narrated offering of Isa (pbwh) very well.

Has Allah commanded you to pick fights or gently warn believers with the truth give you?

Please Brother be not in error of the guidance Allah has blessed us with.

May Allah bless and guide you and yours as youes submit unto Him.

Maybe we should love and help people so we all can grow in the spirit rather than judging people for their intelligence or prejudice against a lack of.

The person in question has been given ample explantion for the question in the OP. By his own words he deems himself more intelligent than most people he has met. He does not engage in dialog and refuses to answer questions. Have you looked at the posts? You should recognize a troll when you see one

It’s not a judgment but an observation.

By golly! You have the reputation for “hit and run”. I am surprised that you are even readin the posts, after firing your round and disappearing.

What is your purpose here? You say you do not see “evidence for debating”. What might that be? Why did you join a Catholic forum, find fault with our beliefs, then state it is not worth talking about?

It is like throwing eggs at the house, then saying “there is no point talking about it”.

You are right.

The question remains, why throw?

I see what you are saying and accept it is an observation, apologies if i did not treat you well. I guess i see 2 much crule treatment in the forum and jumped on you. No excuse for me though.

Best way to treat a troll would be dont bother with the bait. They will tire and cast where they get bites or go home.

That is as soon as we dont see the question as genuine we dont respond.

Same way we should treat satan “get behind me satan” and we dont look back.

God bless you and yours
