Actually, I listed it in my previous post as being one of my favorite movies of all time (post #33 in this thread). It is phenominal! I remember the first time I saw it. I had seen other versions of Hamlet before, like the Mel Gibson version. However, when I saw Branagh’s, which is Hamlet in its entirely, I was finally able to say “I get it!” With other versions, which always had a considerable amount cut out of the original work, all I could say was :ehh:. Everyone in it was so good that I forgot I was watching Shakespeare.

I also really liked the fact that they didn’t make the American actors in it try and perform with English accents.

Yes, I was amazed at how much I understood in it considering it was the entire play (no cuts, no changes to the text, no additions). The cast was magnificent, and (considering it was from Shakespeare) put real meaning in their lines. And before I saw this movie I would never have been able to see either Robin Williams or Billy Crystal doing Shakespeare.

Cant complain about using a nineteenth century setting either. 😉

If I were only able to watch a few, they would have to be;
Dr. Zhivago
Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?
Honkytonk Man
Bronco Billy
Kathy

Whoops, sorry. I forgot Olivier did Henry V, too.

I was refering to the Branagh version. It is soooo good. That man has more theatrical talent in his little finger than most in Hollywood do in their whole bodies. He’s absolutely brilliant.

I borrowed a library DVD of this JUST to re-watch the “Battle Hymn” sequence

“Non nobis Domine
Domine non nobis Domine
Sed nomine, sed nomine
Tuo da gloria”

That is such a great scene! I love that movie. That tenor that sang was wonderful. He is the same that sang in “Much Ado About Nothing”? I know Branagh likes to use the same people a lot.

I love the Non nobis hymn but unfortunately there was an authentic hymn composed by the English after their victory at Agincourt - which was used in the Olivier version of Henry V - Sir William Walton’s score.

I apologize for this mp3. They’ve got the music right but not the pronounciation - it is what they think is middle English not middle English (e.g. cry is pronounced kree; our is pronounced oure). The Agincourt Carol.

I watch The Passion once a year on Good Friday.

Going My Way: “A golf course is nothing but a pool room moved outdoors.” :rotfl:

And my favorite comedy is an obscure little film Tom Hanks did in the late 80s/early 90s called The Burbs. When the neighbor unhooked the electric line so they could break into the house…still makes me laugh. Or…“There go the http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/4/4_2_211.gif brownies!” You just have to see it.

Course, another of my all time fav’s that has male choir singing:

ZULU

Historicaly, it didn’t happen at Rourke’s Drift that the Brit’s and Welsh sang counterpoint to the Zulu’s battlesinging–but they SHOULD have!

"Men of Harlech, on to glory,
This will ever be your story,
Keep these fighting words before ye’
Cambria (Welshmen) never yeild!

That is the track! But I guess I am an old fogey. I like the Branagh Henry V but I can’t but help see the French knights and English longbowmen of the Olivier. And, Sir William Walton used the actual medieval carol in his sound track. For me, it comes down to the Agincourt Carol in Middle English. Non nobis, no matter how noble does not stack up against that which our ancestors wrote.

Another one of my favorites, although I prefer the Italian version with the opera music over the english version with the folk songs. Good movie either way though.
I’ve never seen the Italian one. I love the english one. 🙂

Love the movie and the singing too … and indeed they should have sung Men of Harlech if they didn’t.

I think they were a little busy in real life to be singing though, somehow 😉

Do you know, that on 9/11/01, survivors of Tower 1 could hear in the stairwell, the voice of Rick Recoric singing the movie lyrics of “Men of Harlech”?–the same (1st Lt)Rick Recoric who sang that song & others to his troops at the battle of Ia Drang in 1965??

I love Kenneth Branagh and I ADORED
the film Henry V.

And that song on the battlefield, NON NOBIS DOMINE,
had me in tears the first time I saw that film. I was
in tears, had goosebumps, and chills running up and down my spine.

I would love to get that soundtrack on DVD.
