2 Timothy
7 * **I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.
**8 * From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me,
which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day,
and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his
appearance.

I have two, both of them from the Gospel of Matthew.

The first is Mt 5:1-12:
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
He began to teach them, saying:

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven." Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
I consider the Beatitudes one of the most powerful passages in the Bible.

The second is Mt 21: 28:32:
What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’ He said in reply, ‘I will not,’ but afterwards he changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, ‘Yes, sir,’ but did not go. Which of the two did his father’s will?" They answered, “The first.” Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him.
This was the Gospel reading at the first Mass I attended back when I was in college.

Mine is Sirach 34:15-17 (or 17-20 in the DRV)

"The soul of him that feareth the Lord is blessed.
To whom doth he look, and who is his strength?

***The eyes of the Lord are upon them that fear him, he is their powerful protector, and strong stay, ***

a defence from the heat, and a cover from the sun at noon, a*** preservation from stumbling, and a help from falling: ***

he raiseth up the soul, and enlighteneth the eyes, and giveth health, and life, and blessing."

I really like today’s first reading from John. It focus our attention toward our relationship with God as a relationship of love rather than of fear.

11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No man has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his own Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we know and believe the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 In this is love perfected with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and he who fears is not perfected in love.

This is my favorite:

Mark 1:17 Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
But this is the one that describes my life the best:

Matthew 6:19 13 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

My Favorite:

"I will put enmities between thee and the woman,

and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head,

and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. "

(Genesis 3:15, The Vulgate**)**

Isaiah 40:11(NIV) -

He shall tend his flock like a shepherd,
He shall gather the lambs in his arms
and carry them in his bosom
and shall gently lead those that are with young.

I also love the verse from Isaiah 40–Those who wait upon the Lord will rise up in strength, they will mount up on wings of eagles, they will run and not be weary, they will walk and not faint…

Yes! That’s one of my favorites too. But don’t tell anyone that I prefer the KJV rendering. . . .

Revelation 5:12

"Worthy is the Lamb that was slain
to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength,
honor and glory and blessing."

I first ran into this in Handel’s Messiah, years ago. We just don’t hear this wonderful verse of praise as much as we should.

These aren’t exactly favourites but they did stand out for me when I read them recently.

Mark 1:41.
"Moved with pity, He stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I will…”

Mark 8:22-25.
“And He took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the village… and [he] saw everything clearly.”

(Paraphrasing) “And He took compassion on them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd, and He began to teach them…”

And on a different note, Galatians 2:20.
“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.”

YES! I LOVE that verse. I get chills whenever I look up in the National Shrine and see that inscribed in gold above the altar. It feels as if the whole of heaven is crying it out.

[regarding jcphoenix’s post, if you use the link to the Vatican I provided in the opening post of the thread, you will see that the New American Bible groups joshua-ruth in with the Pentateuchal books. Not my call. I’m not a biblical scholar. Someone probably has a reason, but that sounds like a topic for a different thread.]

"The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of publicans and sinners."

Amen!

Dear friends

Isaiah ‘I have called you by name and I love you’

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

I like Romans 11:34-35 “For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?”

It just seems to fit with things going on in my life, it can explain so much.

My favorite is Jeremiah 17:7-8

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by the water, that sends out it’s roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”

This tells me that if all my trust is in the Lord then it does not matter what happens to me, I will be okay and still bear fruit for the Lord.

**Psalm 139 ** 👍

(All of it … but here’s a few of my favourite lines from it… makes me weep at the thought of God’s love for us even before we were conceived!)

*Where can I hide from your love? From your presence, where can I flee? If I fly with the wings of dawn and alight beyond the sea, Even there your hand will guide me, your right hand hold me fast.

You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb.My very self you knew; my bones were not hidden from you, When I was being made in secret, fashioned as in the depths of the earth. *

Deuteronomy 4:29 “**You shall seek the LORD, your God; and you shall indeed find him when you search after him with your whole heart and your whole soul.” **

Also love John 6:68-69 **"Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” **

I probably have several favorite verses, but one of late that I have turned to often is in Philipians 3:10:

“…to know him and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead” (NAB)

Also,

Romans 8:14 has particular power for me: “those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.” (NAB)

Keep in mind, where did the Spirit lead Jesus?: into the desert to be tempted (Mk 1:12), to the Cross, and through the Resurrection (Rom 8:11). When we experience temptation and suffering, this is no curse, it means that we are children of God conformed (and being ever more conformed) into the Son,… and so these are brief stops onto the final destination of God’s glory.

There are just too many verses that inspire from time to time. My current favorite is John 2:5

“His mother said … ‘Do whatever he tells you.’”

What does Dominus meus et Deus meus! mean?
**
**
*"Do you think I enjoy seeing an evil man die? asks the sovereign LORD. “No I would rather see him repent and live.” *
**
  • Ezekiel 18:23 *
