Hi again kage,
I think you state that very well. The United States is the richest country in the world. We Americans are the privilaged rich of this world. Our Mexican brothers and sisters who come here are usually from the ‘peasantry’ of that country.

Just who was Jesus talking about when he spoke about the poor? How we treat these people is how we treat Christ.
Then why are there people here who are starving, homeless, and jobless if we are collectively so very rich? I’ll be sure to let the bum on the corner know exactly how “priviledged” he is. Why are Americans so eager to reach beyond our borders to help others, but when it comes to people here, we just turn a blind eye.
There may be a lot of people in the US who are rich, even filthy rich. However, there are a lot of poor ones as well. I guess they’re just the “peasantry” of this country, eh?

The message I get at church is that we are to welcome all immigrants. Read this. Our church is strongly pro-immigration.

Catholic Bishops on Immigration

I think they basically see illegal immigration a natural result of our restrictive laws. 🙂
What restrictive laws? The US has the most pro immigration laws in the world. You try to immigrate to The UK, or India and see how far you get.

Yes, there is deprivation in this country too. Most bums on the street statistically suffer from mental illness or substance addictions, as you probably know. It’s very sad. I guess we have to do the best we can. What do you suggest?

I object, however, to labeling undocumented aliens as ‘criminals’. I don’t think they are criminals just by sneaking into the country anymore than I am for going over the speed limit. Strictly speaking, yes, but the label criminal I don’t think accurately describes poor people who are scratching out a living for their families by sneaking into the land of plenty.

Like when that meddling John Paul II didn’t mind his own business when it came to supporting Solidarity in Poland. That should have strictly been between the unionists and the Party.
Yes.

And just like Father Drynan was asked to step down.

This drives me nuts! I discussed this issue with my sales counterpart in the Netherlands, when he moaned about our “treatment” of illegal aliens. I asked him if the Netherlands would tolerate people coming into the country illegally, working without proper documentation and using public services. His answer, of course…“well…no.”

I applaud our president for trying to propose a workable solution with a guest worker program. That, along with improved enforcement of the borders and sending back criminals (I mean illegal aliens who have also committed crimes btw), will go a long way in solving the problem.

God Bless,

Robert.

This one of the programs where this liberal totally agrees with the conservative president.

Did Jesus say it is okay to ignore man’s laws? The proper way to enter any country is to apply for a work visa. I know. I had to fill out a lot of forms and wade through a bureaucratic process just to work in my company’s UK office for a year.

hi rlg,
Yes, I think we’ve been too lax on immigrants who violate our laws. Also, I like what Europe is doing to deport Islamic rabble rousers who stir up hatred and violence in Mosques.

Hopefully the Bush initiative will address some of the problems in the system in a realistic way. But, putting land mines on the border… no, that is a horrible thought.

But, no matter what, these are real humans, very poor people, and our Church is universal, not nationalistic. We need to help the poor, it’s our mandate from Christ.

I just wish more conservatives agreed with him on this. It’s really frustrating!

Maybe our system would have more resources available to help our own people if there was not such a drain on the health care system because hospitals have to care for alien indigents. This land of plenty is being sucked dry to the point that our own people are suffering. How fair is that?
Your reference to speeding is not too great, because an awful lot of people die as a result of speeding accidents. I don’t think the answer lies in saying that some laws, in your judgement, are ok to break while others are not. Why can’t I sneak into someone’s house of plenty and raid their fridge without being carted off to jail?
Also, how fair have these people been to their children? Now these poor kids have to deal with no mom, no dad, all because their parents could not be responsible enough to come here legally.

He’s a conservative. I presume he views things from a conservative point of view, including guest worker programs. What’s not to like about it, and why aren’t conservatives behind their man on this?

I know no liberals who oppose this program of Bush’s. Strange.:hmmm:

I agree, come here legally, but, if I have my suspicions, INS WILL be called!!!
INS wont even talk to you about Illegal Mexicans or anyone else. The standing order is “let them go”. I have called in numerous groups of ‘admitted’ illegal aliens. They just let them go. Now if you have a suspected terrorist they will care. The INS has no want to enforce anything. If they get past border patrol there in. I would love to see a change.

Well, I wish I could concur with your last statement…I listen to AirAmerica occasionally, and nothing Bush does/says is okay with most of their hosts. They believe Bush’s proposal is just a way for him to make his buddies rich on the backs of immigrants. Nice. He’s evil incarnate you know  .

I’m not totally surprised - it hasn’t been called the INS for nearly three years now 🙂

They’re wrong. He may be a buddy of oilmen, but I never saw him as particularly chummy with growers.

Not incarnate. 🙂

As far as healthcare, since I work in that field and take care of ‘illegals’ at times, I’m quite aware of that situation. They generally are wonderful, family oriented people, in my estimation. I think poor people are entitled to get married and have children too, btw.

Probably nothing more can be done by me on this thread. Good day to you all. 🙂

Good Day,

I respect the fact that you have so much love and mercy for illegals. You are totaly correct to do so. There is a problem that also needs to be solved with illegal aliens being in the country. Maybe if the government cracks down the Mexican government will pull it’s head out of the sand and help there people. I think we should love illegals just like you and also call a crime a crime.
