Concerning illigal aliens. They are all criminals and should be deported. The steal US jobs, they are overwhelming our social services.

My Grandparents were immigrants and came through Ellis Island ‘LEGALLY’. They learned English, worked hard and became good and LEGAL US citizens.

The US is not going to crack down on the borders, it is a show statement.

Almost all the jobs they take are jobs no one else will do. Here in Arkansas, they are the bulk of workers at poultry processing plants. They are the bulk of farm workers. They do almost all of the domestic work in hotels.

American citizens can’t be receuited for those positions, plain and simple.

There are reasons for opposing illegal immigration, sure, but stealing American jobs is not one of them.

You are absolutely correct. As long as there are illegals willing to work for sub poverty level wages and no benefits, there will always be people willing to exploit them. If there weren’t the illegal issue, these factory farm owners would actually have to (Gasp!!!) pay a living wage and provide benefits to make these positions attractive…we wouldn’t want that now, would we.

My Parish is gathering supplies and donations for children who were left without parents a few days ago. The INS did a big round up of workers at a local business – and “shipped em back”. This left children behind, children who lost one or both parents, to be taken in by friends and other family members. As these families lost bread winners, those who have taken in the children are struggling. Our Parish is working to gather school supplies, good backpacks, and $$ to assist these children.

Please, pray for these families in crisis – and remember, we are talking about FAMILIES when we use the word “illegals”.

Exactly my point, kage. These are human beings who are striving for a better life in a hostile and uncertain world. Yes, it’s true that our immigration quotas for Mexico are limited. It’s also true that a certain percetage of Mexicans are involved in gang activties and real crime and wear out their welcome. But nevertheless, we as Catholics are supposed to help the smallest and most humble of God’s people. That is how we serve Christ. That is what we’re instructed to do by our Church.

It’s difficult to follow Christ and the edicts of our Church. It’s not easy. We have to constantly be vigilant to overcome some of our natural tendencies to sin. We have to discipline ourselves in so many things! We have to obey our Bishops, even when we disagree! Yes, it’s not easy.

But when did Christ say “Aid and Abet (sp?) criminals?”.

Hi tcay,
I guess I don’t view people who come here out of desparation in order to put bread on the table, through humble and menial work, as ‘criminals’. The Church also states that a human being has a right to food and basic neccessities, even if civil law must be disobeyed to do so.

Hi HH,
I think you have a huge heart. While circumstances can alleviate some of the culpability for a sin, it cannot alleviate all culpability. When folks do this (illegally immigrate), it is thought out and planned for a long time. They know it is illegal…they’ve thought about it…they do it anyway…what further requirement is there for sin?
They somehow manage to save enough money to get here, so I don’t think they’re starving in the streets. I’m sure they want a better station in life, more for their families and kids, but don’t we all? What if their station in life is the cross God has given them? Immigration laws were put in place by people to whom God gave that authority by virtue of allowing them to have that job. Isn’t illegal immigration then an attempt to defy God?
The INS has procedures for people who are trying to escape persecution in their own country, but most of these folks are just poor…not persecuted. I don’t see how greed makes it ok to break the law.

I don’t trust the border patrol to do much. Land mines, though, should work pretty well at stopping both TM’s and OTM’s.

The Feds report that 70,000 OTM’s have run across the border just this year, and they report finding prayer rugs and Koran’s in the desert. Maybe there are Bishops and some folks here who don’t think it’s wrong to break the law. But it is wrong, no matter what they say. And we need to act to prevent the next disaster from happening here.

Hi tcay,
Probably it varies with each person. I agree with you, it’s a difficult situation. I’ve been annoyed with it myself at times. But, when I get to know some of these folks individually through my work, it’s changed my outlook.

Dear mdzialo,
Surely you’re not serious? Mexican immigrants are hardly a threat to national security!

The Sheriff of that county and even the Republican Governor (Huckabee) were angered by the Gestapo tactics of the damned Feds in arresting those people.

Yes, their tactics.

Darn is far too mild a word.

Jawohl. Ich diene! Befehl ist Befehl!
…what a bunch of jerks
You’ve got that right.
…upholding the laws of the country…they should be ashamed.
Right. No notice to local authorities, no indications to the state authorities. They should be more than ashamed. They ought to lose their jobs.

The laws of God are where we as Christians are accountable - we are commanded to love one another. We are commanded to care for the poor.

To escape crushing poverty and hunger is not greed - to have all that we have and say “no no no, we will not share” THAT is greed.

These were hard working family people, doing what they have to do to support their children. The majority of them are Christian - and most of the Chrisitans are Catholic. I am ashamed that my state did this to my brothers and sisters in Christ.

Hi again kage,
I think you state that very well. The United States is the richest country in the world. We Americans are the privilaged rich of this world. Our Mexican brothers and sisters who come here are usually from the ‘peasantry’ of that country.

Just who was Jesus talking about when he spoke about the poor? How we treat these people is how we treat Christ.

The message I get at church is that we are to welcome all immigrants. Read this. Our church is strongly pro-immigration.

Catholic Bishops on Immigration

I think they basically see illegal immigration a natural result of our restrictive laws. 🙂
The Catholic Church needs to mind its own business when it comes to politics.

All the Bishops have done is to put me at odds with their political decisions. I cannot possibly agree with tolerance towards illegal immigration and I will vehemently argue against my Bishop here in Boston against such a policy. Again, I believe in the seperation of Church and state.

Is that so? Do you apply that sentiment universally? 🙂

Uh Richard, I was just asking for a link to perhaps, say, a newspaper article describing what happened.

Like when that meddling John Paul II didn’t mind his own business when it came to supporting Solidarity in Poland. That should have strictly been between the unionists and the Party.
