Where are you in the immigration process? If you are bringing her here on a K-1 visa, she cannot arrive more than 30 days prior to the wedding, so she will only have to stay with someone for a very short time. It may take up to a year to go through immigration, so don’t plan a wedding until you know she has been granted a visa.

My husband is British, so “been there done that”. It’s hard, but it can be done.

But don’t live together - that’s just not cool for many of the reasons noted above.

Hi Liza. She applied for an extended visa using me as a sponsor. Big long process (ugh). She will be able to stay long enough for us to get married. When we do it’ll make it a lot easier for her to get residency status. I’ve heard horror stories even when people are married though. It’s worth it though 🙂

I am not saying this is right but the above poster is wrong. I was in a situation like you posted and I ended up living with my future wife for about 3 months. NO we did not have sex.
Your example is not to be followed as a good and holy one. It sounds like it was scandalous, and it could have been a violation of the 5th Commandment – more info from the Catechism, #2284-2287.

Respect for the souls of others: scandal

2284 Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. The person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor’s tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.

2285 Scandal takes on a particular gravity by reason of the authority of those who cause it or the weakness of those who are scandalized. It prompted our Lord to utter this curse: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."Scandal is grave when given by those who by nature or office are obliged to teach and educate others. Jesus reproaches the scribes and Pharisees on this account: he likens them to wolves in sheep’s clothing.

2286 Scandal can be provoked by laws or institutions, by fashion or opinion.

Therefore, they are guilty of scandal who establish laws or social structures leading to the decline of morals and the corruption of religious practice, or to “social conditions that, intentionally or not, make Christian conduct and obedience to the Commandments difficult and practically impossible.” This is also true of business leaders who make rules encouraging fraud, teachers who provoke their children to anger, or manipulators of public opinion who turn it away from moral values.

2287 Anyone who uses the power at his disposal in such a way that it leads others to do wrong becomes guilty of scandal and responsible for the evil that he has directly or indirectly encouraged. “Temptations to sin are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come!”

It is for marriage prep and am told the marriage prep you receive from your priest is generally this long. Another reason is being to save up for a small wedding. Nothing spectacular, but these things cost money. I will talk to my priest though to see if he can speed things up a little
I would advise you to either: Get married ASAP, while NOT living together OR wait to get married and still, NOT live together. I know, it’s cheaper to shack up, but so not worth it! Long-term, you risk a lot - like the relationship itself.

The wedding trappings - clothing, flowers, reception - are the very LEAST important part. The vows to each other and to God are the whole reason to be there. It’s not just a fun day with a great party. We are talking the rest of your life here, and even eternity.

Thanks for all the great replies! I definitely didn’t expect this many.

One thing several of you mentioned is her or me moving in with family. I know you guys are right about not living together. I have an aunt and uncle in town that are very good Catholics. They have a bunch of young noisy and bratty kids 🙂 and I don’t think I could maroon her to their house (even though it would be funny 🙂 ). Maybe with the speeding up of the marriage prep I would request from the priest with the combination of me staying at my families I can get avoid cohabitation. It makes things heck of alot harder but I guess the way to heaven isnt easy 😦 She loves me but thinks I do weird things sometimes for my religion. She’s going to have a field day with this one! Haha

I cannot recommend enough going to the forum on this site - it was priceless to me when trying to navigate the immigration process: www.visajourney.com

No, the way to Heaven isn’t easy. But if it were, you wouldn’t be fit for Heaven when you get there, because “nothing unclean can enter Heaven”.

This has not been addressed, but you need to be very careful of marrying someone who does not share your religion. It’s great that she’s Christian, but there are still a world of challenges for Protestants and Catholics to get through in marriage. Be very sure that she is willing to submit to your beliefs, and pray continuously for her whole-hearted conversion.

In all fairness though, she’s almost there; as Lutherans are as close as one can get to “Catholic without the Pope” (depends on the branch of Lutheranism though).

Sure, she ought to convert, but from inner convincing, and not just because of marriage to a Catholic. Right now, they have about 2000 steps to go through together; there will be time for RCIA later on.

How so? I was under the impression that there are some pretty irreconcilable differences between the two. Some Lutherans don’t even believe Catholics are Christians at all.

While reunification with Lutheran churches is not possible as it is with the Eastern churches, the bar keeping a Lutheran from fully embracing the Catholic faith is much lower than with other Protestants. Lutherans have a liturgical form of worship and similar theology. For many of them, it is as simple as asking the question, “Why aren’t I Catholic?”

Some of this depends too on what sort of Lutheran one is. I understand that there are different types. Some closer to Catholicism than others.

The OP stated this:
How do we live with each other and not end up having sex? It might be about 6 months till then. Im catholic but am not a saint or have the will power of one.
so it’s pretty safe to assume that having sex for this couple is likely.

Could some people cohabitate? Yes, if the circumstances are appropriate. If there is an apartment in the home, or a trailer on the property, or separate cottage, or various other scenarios, it might be workable. It would be advisable to discuss the situation with the priest to avoid scandal or any other issues even in this case.

Should the OP cohabitate? No, given what has been stated. If the OP has had a relationship of a reasonable time, and is sure this marriage is the right course of action, it might be best to discuss speeding up the marriage date with the priest.

My brother a devout Catholic and recently converted wife lived together before the wedding and managed somehow not to have sex.

She was living in a bad situation with her family and needed to move out. My bro took her in on the condition that they wouldn’t engage in sex. Guess what?? They made it. Lots of prayer pulled them through.

The answer is simple. If you live together, you will end up having sex.

Speak to a Catholic priest immediately about this.
Not that I think I was right to do this, but I lived with my now husband for nearly 2 years before marriage without having sex. I agree it is a risky situation and generally ill advised, but it isn’t necessarily a “sentence” to premarital sex.

People get shot in the head and 5% survive. Those who survive suffer lasting neurological problems.

The gun is cohabitation. Why put it to your head and pull the trigger? Why advocate such behavior at all?

I’m hearing a lot of rush, rush, rush to the altar. A few posters have questioned if you’ve both given this upcoming marriage enough time, discernment and serious prayer. Given the brief amount of time you were actually dating (2 months), I would probably have to say sloooooooooow down. Marriage is one solution to getting the two of you in the same country; BUT, marriage is forever. Is their really no other way of getting her here (or you going there) to allow yourselves some “normal” dating opportunities? I don’t want to sound negative, but I’ve seen so many other posters who are currently struggling with infidelity, living in miserable marriages, separation, divorce and annulments. PLEASE give yourself time.

I am not at all familiar with immigration laws or working visas, but I’ve seen several posters give you some websites to visit. Try to see if there are any alternatives available for her.

I also saw you’'ve come up with one solution to avoid living together. Excellent!! By living with your cousin’s family, you may also learn some parenting tips.🙂

God will guide you if you let him. I’m praying for both of you.

Hi, I’m new to this site, but have been stealing knowledge from it for about a year. I finally have a question that I can’t find though.
-I was in the army and stationed in Italy. I went to Denmark on a mission for a couple months and met a Danish women. Long story short… I’m out of the army now and back in America. We are planning on her coming to America in September and getting married as soon as we can do it right in the church. the only place during this time she is going to be able to stay is with me. This is for financial reasons, as she won’t have a job and I can’t afford 2 separate house or apartment payments. She is Lutheran and I am a practicing catholic, but she is open to the catholic faith and she is entertaining the idea of converting.
My question is simple. How do we live with each other and not end up having sex? It might be about 6 months till then. Im catholic but am not a saint or have the will power of one. Or if you have any other ideas about any other living arrangements that could work, they would be much appreciated

I was going to post this in the questions forum, but I think married Catholics would have a better outlook and more ideas. Thanks guys
Talk with your priest about the situation. He will give you guidence.

I wasn’t advocating, I was responding to your comment that suggested that cohabitating would definitely lead to sex, which isn’t always the case. If a couple is commited to chastity, but are put in a situation of living together, they can choose not to have sex. Obviously most cohabitating couples do have sex, but most of the time that was part of the intent of living together to begin with, and most of the time they are already having sex when they move in together. Again I agree it is generally a bad idea, but I am proof that a couple can live together without having sex.

Your proof could be proof of scandal. The more you hold up yourself (and others) as an example on how you were able to do it (even without doing it), the more you go against Church teaching on cohabitating. It’s not just a bad idea; it is ruinous one and one that is absolutely contrary to chasity and Catholic morality. Is this not clear?

I’m not holding myself up or advocating cohabitation. I’m just saying that it is not humanly impossible to live together without having sex. Additionally, scandal is something that leads another to sin, not merely something that makes others think you might be sinning. The term is often misused. In biblical times, the betrothed husband often lived with the wife’s family before their marriage. I understand it is not the same thing as modern cohabitation so no need for you to point out the difference. Modern couples spend a lot of alone time together as it is generally whether or not they live together.

It seems you don’t understand the gravity of giving scandal. If someone does something that causes another to sin, they themselves sin.

[BIBLEDRB]Luke 17:1-2[/BIBLEDRB]

Even though the unmarried couple who cohabits “chastely” did not commit sin, themselves, if their example causes a weaker couple to attempt the same, when the weaker couple fails, the stronger couple shares in that sin.

Since they think they are above reproach (like the pharisees of Jesus day), it is more of a challenge for them to actually repent and find forgiveness. (that is why it is “better” for the one who gives scandal to have a millstone hung around his neck)

Also, it is incorrect to compare unmarried couples today with betrothed couples in that time. Betrothal is marriage. It is just an “early stage” of marriage where the couple is not yet permitted to engage in the marital act or live in their own home.
