The LDS Church has recently published a 6 minute video presentation which I thought is very interesting and professionally done. I searched to see if somebody has put it up on the Internet yet, but didn’t find any, so I decided to put it up there myself. Here it is:

This is my first venture into YouTube; and also my first venture in the art of DVD ripping! I have not yet mastered the technique to perfection; but it is okay for now. Tell us what you think. I think it is good! What is your opinion? Does the Catholic Church has anything comparable?

The usual Mormon feel-good marketing fare. Trolling for converts?

Looks like a lot of “milk before the meat” there.

If by “comparable” you mean “superior”, then yes. It’s called Sacred Scripture and 2,000 years of Sacred Tradition.

I like these a lot better than your Mormon one, z. They go into specifics rather than trying to sucker people in with emotionalism.
Thank you, those were very nice videos. I was wondering, however, if the Catholic Church officially publishes presentational materials of this kind. Those videos were published by Catholics Come Home, which I assume is an independent organization. The video I had put up is an official publication of the LDS Church.

I think you are laboring under a misconception about how the Church operates here. The Church’s official means of reaching out is through its ordained ministers preaching the Gospel. It doesn’t do videos or other such things, but rather encourages its ministers and lay people to create ministries/apostolates as the need arises.

So, there aren’t any “Vatican-made” videos that I know of. Independent organizations, such as the one cited here (and Catholic Answers, etc.) are free to put out whatever they like but are subject to the local bishop.

There are organizations that have the Church’s approval as “a public association of the faithful” or Orders, etc. But, to my knowledge (please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, people) the Vatican doesn’t do this sort of thing.

The LDS video was geared towards a specific group of people; those who were searching for a meaning and purpose to their lives; or those who had not yet thought about that, but were capable of being provoked to do so. It is when you begin to ask those kinds of questions that the message of the LDS Church becomes the most attractive message around.

Thank you Della for your informative post.

It was a nice video. but gave no indication as to who made it or were to go for more info. I really was expecting by the end to have an 800 # given for a free copy of the BoM and to set up someone to talk to.

Dang. “Epic” brought tears to my eyes. I’ve heard that spot on the radio, but the images made it that much more powerful.

Even gave a shot of my hometown!
The first link was good (haven’t seen the second link.)

As for the Mormon video, it was full of platitudes that could have been produced by any church (or another religion.) It didn’t mention LDS church or the book of Mormon, or LDS teaching at all. It was almost as though the makers of the video were ashamed to mention the LDS faith, as if the LDS church was something shameful.

At least the Epic video made it VERY clear that the video is about the Catholic Church.

Yes I understand the LDS have taken up marketing in a big way it shows on my TV and radio. I think the video you linked shows a good understanding of marketing to a wide audience. The word that comes to mind for me is “cheesy” sorry.

I do see LDS identifiers in the video, toward the end the young men are obviously LDS missionaries. If you watch the only people who smile are people who are speaking to the missionaries or later the people in prayer ( arms folded LDS prayer posture). This happy prayer position is contrasted by earlier shots of somber, unfulfilled or unhappy people shown in the general Christian prayer posture.

The whole thing is just The Ensign put on video, lot’s of emotionalism no substance.

The original video does give you that information. At the end there is a scene that directs you to www.mormon.org. But I have not yet mastered the black art of video ripping and editing to put it all together properly. The video comes in different segments, and several different languages and settings; and I haven’t figured out how it all works to be able to rip the right pieces and stitch them together. When I have learned how to do that, I will create a better version of it and put it up there again. In the mean time that is good enough to get along with. If you really want to see it all properly in action, ask the LDS missionaries to give you one! It is a brand new video, and some of them may not yet have it. It is called “Finding Happiness”.

I didn’t realize crossing arms was the LDS posture for prayer. I thought the children looked very uncomfortable, as though praying was the absolutely last thing they wanted to do.

Now Rebecca, don’t be so bias. I watched the video without the sound, and it came across very catholic. The imaging is certainly catholic. The catholic message is simple: finding meaning in a secularized society. If you watch the video without the sound, you will see perhaps catholic churches, alienated people, and yet, there are meaningful images of togetherness with god. Thus, it agrees with the pope that happiness and meaning are difficult to find if a person embraces secularism.

Perhaps, but praying in front of a camera is not comfortable regardless if it is a child or an adult. Crossing one’s arms is not lds although many do so. Most pray with hands clasped in front of them.

Think about the significance of the body language in various prayer positions. Folded arms suggest the person is closed off to further (name removed by moderator)ut, in a self-protective mode. The earliest Christians prayed in the orans position: arms extended, palms turned up, signifying openness and willingness to receive. It’s like kids - when they pout, they fold their arms and make a face. What do they do when they want your attention and love? They open their arms and reach out for you
I think our prayer posture matters. Just some food for thought.

Does a British or Australian accent supposedly increase the validity of the Mormon message? Can’t they find a good Utah accent so people would really know what they were getting into?

Is there a Utah accent? Never been there.
