At the time he was fired the Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal George, said Collette was dismissed for his "participation in a form of union that cannot be recognized as a sacrament by the church."
The judge, ruling in favor of the church, said that "the Supreme Court has recognized the right of religious organizations to control their own affairs," Kocoras wrote. "This right includes the freedom to 'decide for themselves, free from state interference, matters of church government" and "to select their own leaders."
