For something that was suppose to elementary and no problem, we now have 1-dead, 48 being observed, 5 in quarantine and a New Case. You have to wonder. 😦
This part is confusing:
“The patient claims to have had contact with the Dallas ‘patient zero,’” according to a statement from Dana Baird-Hanks, a spokeswoman with the city of Frisco.
According to a statement from the clinic, the patient answered “yes” on a form “regarding travel to West Africa.”
So did he become infected a) via Duncan b) via his recent time in W Africa or c) they came over together?

Person who says he had contact with Duncan showing Ebola symptoms. Looks like we might have a second case coming in:

According to this news page, the person who is en route to the hospital wasn’t one who was in isolation. He decided to walk into an urgent care and say, “I might have Ebola.” and expose a building full of people. What is wrong with people? Call 911 from home! Keep your fatal disease exposure to a minimum!

Which is why I keep yammering on about how irresponsible it is for the CDC to portray this as difficult to contract. It is highly contagious and the people better wake up before the system becomes overwhelmed. While I understand they are trying to control panic levels, they need to understand that the people are really going to start panicking and throwing around wild conspiracy theories if they feel they’ve been lied to. I’ve seen too many comments online where people actually think this is similar to HIV. They make glib comments like, “well just don’t go playing with someones bodily fluids and you’ll be fine.”

I agree. It is, it must be, much easier to catch. The spanish nurse evidently was exposed while removing her PPE. That’s a very short amount of time and somehow I doubt she allowed an open wound to touch dripping blood. She’s a well trained nurse who knows how to handle contaminated materials. New protocols must be taught to everyone!

It looks like it was the deputy who had to go pay Duncan’s apartment a visit unprotected. From what I remember in the past he was very upset about it.
The patient was identified as Sgt. Michael Monning, a deputy who accompanied county health officials Zachary Thompson and Christopher Perkins into the apartment where Thomas Eric Duncan stayed in Dallas.
The deputy was ordered to go inside the unit with officials to get a quarantine order signed. No one who went inside the unit that day wore protective gear.
According to Christopher Dyer, with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Association, Monning said he was feeling sick to his stomach before his visit to the clinic. Dyer expressed concern for Monning and his family.
Completely irresponsible of the CDC to let people near a hot zone without protection!

Somehow I doubt the deputy was recently in Africa, so perhaps he checked the box just to get through to the proper people and make sure they took his claims seriously.

Wow,that is just shameful! how could they have forced anyone in the home? Why? Why did they even consider sending anyone in without protective equipment? Are they TRYING to spread the virus? I’m shocked. This poor man is just doing his job and he is now at possible risk to lose his life with one of the most frightening viruses we have in the world 😦

Does it take a day or two for the blood test?
I heard the person was from Frisco, Texas.
Why was the debuty sent to the apartment?

I think jen said it best. Ebola is highly contagious and it’s irresponsible for the authorities to be telling us otherwise.

More cases to come. How long do you think the deputy was inside the apartment? A lot less time than the 4 people who were with Duncan while he was sick…

God help those poor children…

I think they can get the results within minutes, but they have to wait a day or so to retest due to what happend to Dr. Brantly. Remember that while he was symptomatic he first tested negative. I am not sure how many hours they waited, but his second test came back positive.

The deputy needed the legal paperwork for the quaratine signed. Lord only knows what happened to the pen and clipboard. His car and clothing were later confiscated. It’s not as if his commanding officer who didn’t know better ordered him into the apartment, but rather, health officials. This type of ignorance could wipe out half of Dallas.
Sgt. Monnig says they were assured by health officials that no one inside the apartment was showing symptoms of Ebola and that the danger was remote.

This is really scary! I pray he doesn’t have ebola!
I didn’t know the doctor’s blood tests had first shown negative.

But how come no one else in the apartment has shown any symptoms?
Maybe the door or door frame? I am really shocked the girlfriend has not gotten sick yet.

And on it goes. I pray to God this guy doesn’t have it, but if he does then the web continues to grow.
Chuck Moreno, who went into the CareNow center with his 15-year-old son to get a flu shot, said he saw a patient [Sgt Monning] whose skin was flushed enter the clinic with his wife. He was hunched over but walking.
Within minutes, police and fire units were there. Moreno said he asked a CareNow employee if the response was related to Ebola, and the employee nodded her head “yes.”
Moreno said he and his son went into an examination room, put on surgical masks they found there and sprayed disinfectant on themselves. Staff told them he and his son could not leave CareNow and would be transferred to a major medical center.

The incubation period is up to 21 days. She is not out of the woods yet. I would be amazed if she and the others aren’t infected.

And Africa started the exact same way from 1 to 6. I agree the treatment and conditions are better here, but the handling is a disaster because of the ease which it spreads. The first two treated here have no idea how they contracted the virus, no different than the woman in Spain. 🤷

It started in rural areas. It’s true there are many variables over there that we aren’t going to have to face, but at the same time, we are looking at an outbreak starting in a major city. We need to err on the side of caution. If I lived in TX I would be stocking up on food, water, bleach, tp, soap, gloves, masks etc. If I lived in Dallas I’d go buy a gas mask before they sell out. I think this is one of those rare instances when a bit of fear mongering would be healthy. EDIT: might be healthy.

The deputy was in the apartment for 30 minutes.
That seems long enough to me for him to touch a surface and become infected. I sure hope this deputy is just stressed out and has a flu bug.

Mexico has zero cases of Ebola. You have to have Ebola to spread Ebola. The interjection of immigration in this thread is fear-mongering over and impossible event, at least at this time. .
With a 7-21 day incubation period, there is nothing impossible about a Liberian flying in to Mexico prior to showing symptoms and crossing the border as his condition worsened.

You really don’t seem to grasp how sophisticated the human smuggling industry has become in the USA.

latino.foxnews.com/latino/news/2014/10/08/top-us-general-says-ebola-outbreak-coming-through-central-america-is-real/
“If Ebola breaks into Haiti, and Central America, I think it is literally ‘Katie by the bar’ in terms of the mass migration of Central Americans into the United States,” Kelly said, of the thousands he foresees fleeing countries like Honduras, El Salvaldor and Guatemala if an Ebola outbreak there were to occur. “These populations will move to either run away from Ebola or, in the fear of having been infected, to get to the United States, where it would be taken care of.”
The general added, “If there is an outbreak in the Caribbean, particularly in Central America, it would make the 68,000 unaccompanied children, I think, look like a small problem.”
