Hillary was also helped out somewhat by the moderator–no surprise from a main stream media person. He interrupted Trump 41 times and Hillary 7 times. She was allowed to talk on and on while he was cut off time and again.
Perhaps he was biased, but did you consider:
  1. Trump cut across Hillary far more than she cut across him.
  2. Hillary stayed on topic, relatively speaking, for each question she was asked. Trump very obviously went off on massive tangents occasionally, like for the birther thing and Holt was trying to get him to answer.

Yeah, that kind of debate will work except in this year, when you have Trump the unconventional candidate. It’s pleasant to hear someone talk like a normal person even if he misses talking points. He comes off as authentic, which Hillary can’t ever dream of doing.
Well, I’m not sure ā€œauthenticā€ is a judge of how well one did in a debate if it means talking like you spent no time preparing. A debate is ā€œscoredā€ based on debating skills and countering your opponent, not on whether or not you stick it to the man. But I don’t like Trump’s ā€œauthenticā€ regardless - he comes off as volatile, rude and ignorant.

Again, I’d vote for him before Hillary, but because of the pro-life issue.

Lester Holt is a registered Republican. 🤷

The questions were not known ahead of time, so how could she be reading from a TelePrompTer? They aren’t small, someone in the audience could have turned their heads and scene it. Trump would have seen it.

Like her or dislike her, she did very well yesterday.
No surprise she did well. She gave us the same pap she has been feeding us for years about what she wants to do. And the bit about helping the middle class and small businesses made me ill.

I agree with you. I watched with my husband and teen-age son, and they were much happier with him than I was. I kept thinking, he should have included this info, he should have pointed that out, and my menfolk kept talking about what she did or didn’t do. They did not think he did as badly as I did.

I read someone mentioned to lighting: there was a huge difference in how each is permitted to present him- or herself. : she can wear flattering colors, he’s pretty much stuck with grey. She can wear gobs of make-up, he can’t. How did she get to look 30 years younger?

But the way they filmed each of them was very disadvantageous to him too. First, they shot him from further away so he looked smaller than she did. The lighting was very different for each of them: his was very normal but hers was bright and flattering. And her mic was at the right height for her and his was not.
Those are good points about the lighting. He seemed almost colorless and she wore that bright red pantsuit for power.

I cannot believe that anyone could concieve that Trump won. I would never ever vote for Hillary, but she came across well prepared and had answers to all of the questions that were coherent and didn’t involve her saying ā€˜there are no jobs’ twenty times in a minute. I felt embarrassed for Trump. And that he came off as more elitist thinking that he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread because he’s a billionaire and that entitles him to be president.

When he leaned into the mic after she accused him of not paying taxes I was sure he would deny it but he said ā€œthat’s businessā€. I nearly choked. And how his tax policy involves cutting taxes for the wealthy? How self serving is that? I’m sorry, I cannot understand how his responses to those two things alone didn’t loose him the debate.

Both candidates got a few good punches in on various issues but I think Hillary recovered from them better.

Holt was obviously going to interrupt Trump more given that Trump kept trying to speak when he wasn’t suposed to. Hillary did it too but Trump was more rude about it. Also Trump refused to answer some questions like the Birther thing so Holt cut across to try and get him to stop waffling.

I guess if you really dislike Clinton it colours your opinion of her. But her ā€˜smug’ look was probably unavoidable because she knew she didn’t want to be accused of scowling the whole time. She probably practiced her not talking face. Unlike Trump.

Trump’s temperament comment was one of the more ironic moments in the debate for me.

Ultimately it comes down to a candidate that would be terrible for unborn babies (the ultimate no no) or a dude who comes across as embarrassingly unsuited to the job. I would probably vote for trump and feel sick afterwards or vote third party. But I don’t have a vote. I don’t envy you guys your choices this time around.
I completely agree with your analysis. At no time has it been more apparent that Trump is not a politician and does not give pat political answers to questions than during this debate. This may be appealing to many voters but I think the charm is wearing thin for others.

Some in the media actually got it right before the debate when they said, minds are made up, this is about motivating the people who already support you.

Yes, there are no ā€œgood old daysā€. Life has never been better in this country than now – when you look at everybody on average, not just privileged white folks. And certainly I don’t look for the ā€œgood old daysā€ either (and I’m white). Life has never been better and more exciting.
The ā€œgood old daysā€ were before we were forced to look the other way while millions of babies were being slaughtered.

Here’s my take on the debate

Trump’s goal was to seem reasonable and stay out of the gutter. I think he did that

Hillary’s two goals were to show that Trump was not to be trusted with the keys of the nation and show she had the stamina to be president. I don’t know if she accomplished that first goal, but I think she accomplished the second.

Trump definitely communicated that Clinton was for status quo; and Hillary seemed to embrace that.

Will this change the numbers? Maybe
This was my take as well.

But her ā€˜smug’ look was probably unavoidable because she knew she didn’t want to be accused of scowling the whole time. She probably practiced her not talking face.
I have seen the same face on other elderly people when they are feeling a little gassy. I assumed her tummy was upset.

The debate exposed once again Trump’s fatal flaw: his egocentricity. Time after time Clinton successfully baited him into spending valuable time defending his businesses and personal behavior. He was on the defensive 90% of the night. That plus his lack of discipline and composure, and his lack of articulation. If Trump is not able to focus on the task at hand in a debate, how are Americans supposed to elect to him the highest office?

Now we know that Lester Holt is a Democrat. He is not man enough to stand up to NBC as he knows he would lose his job and also his son’s job who works there.

He would not stop Hillary from talking, he let her talk over Trump, she lied several times and looked like the cat that swallowed the canary. Such a smug face. Holt also interrupted Trump constantly so that Trump could not get his thoughts together.

Holt was terrible and I am sure that the others will be the same. I don’t understand why the RNC doesn’t demand that half the moderators are Republicans who are not anti Trump.

Of course Hillary has done this 15 times and has had 8 years to prepare. I have lost all respect for both parties, but for the Democrats more. One of the media said that it seemed she was reading a teleprompter. I felt she looked like a robot and was repeating what had been programed into her.

Whether one likes Trump or not I believe he has a heart and does want the best for the U.S. Hillary just want power and don’t be surprised if we have a dictator after the election. Our country has really gone to pot. I remember when life seemed hopeful and I understand that many are too young to remember the good old days.

Hopefully Trump will reconsider the next debates and set different fair standards for it. I knew this would happen.

Perception is everything. Unfortunately, your perception is wrong. They did the counts. Trump interrupted Clinton 51 times, Clinton interrupted Trump 17 times!

I couldn’t figure out why she chose red. It wasn’t very flattering. She was like a red bull.
LOL, I thought the effect was good, all around she looked visually brighter than Trump. I think that’s a serious disadvantage for men, who can’t do much to change their appearance.

I find the different reactions to the debate very interesting!

This is the first debate I’ve watched in a long time. Like any political debate there was very little substance. The answers provided didn’t give much detail. I think very few people changed their mind based on the debate. But with nationwide politics the whole point is to appeal to the narrow middle who decide the outcome. Each candidate fights to be the most moderate. This is why Hillary Clinton, a multi millionaire who achieved her wealth through politics, kept using the term ā€˜middle class’.

The question then is who most appealed to the middle class. Trump’s appeal is in the notion that our country is in terrible shape because of the politicians who have run it. Clinton’s appeal is that the country is doing well because people like her have been running it. So it all comes down to which position the middle ground voters resonate with.

The debate moderation was not surprisingly biased against Trump. Holt asked silly questions designed to embarrass Trump.
HOLT: Mr. Trump, for five years, you perpetuated a false claim that the nation’s first black president was not a natural-born citizen. You questioned his legitimacy. In the last couple of weeks, you acknowledged what most Americans have accepted for years: The president was born in the United States. Can you tell us what took you so long?
Here the moderator works in the word false and also race. What does race have to do with the claim? For that matter is Obama the first Black president? He is mixed race, unless you go by the racist idea that just one drop of Black blood makes you Black. Holt should fact check his own questions.

Another question was designed to make Trump look sexist.
HOLT: Mr. Trump, this year Secretary Clinton became the first woman nominated for president by a major party. Earlier this month, you said she doesn’t have, quote, ā€œa presidential look.ā€ She’s standing here right now. What did you mean by that?
What does her being a woman have to do with anything?

But Clinton wasn’t asked about any of her many problems except for the emails which was asked almost in passing.
HOLT: He also — he also raised the issue of your e-mails. Do you want to respond to that?
Here regarding an issue of judgment and possible criminal conduct related to Clintons actual government work Holt decides to skip any biased characterization and just let Clinton make a statement.

Overall I think Trump appeared more genuine and Hillary more canned. I do think Trump was able to somewhat contain himself. He tended to ramble as he does. He failed to shut down effectively a few issues or take good political advantage of Hillary attacks. For instance when Hillary brought up bankruptcy he should have tied her to the Wall Street bailouts. Both were true to themselves so it all comes down to what appeals most to the middle.

Wow…what a bunch of whining nit picking bunch here on CAF…I won’t be voting for HC or DT…but to read the comments by some here on HC…what color dress she wore…was she going to stand on a box to look taller…her makeup…she looked like she had a tummy upset…on and on…just spiteful comments by people who call themselves Catholic…it just shows how politics takes precedence over any sense of Christian charity by some…sad.
