First thing in the morning, how do you pray? Do you get up first or pray while still in bed?

Do you kneel by the bedside floor? Do you immediately say the rosary?

Do you go and get breakfast first or spend time with God first?

What specific prayer(s) do you say?

I am interested in learning about all the ways and means to live a God centered life, with prayer beginning the day and then sewn through out the day.

Its been difficult to focus and your (name removed by moderator)ut would be appreciated.

For me, I try to make an extra effort of waking up earlier than everyone else so I can have the quiet time (which isn’t too hard in my house — I’m the only early bird). I make a cup of coffee and take care of any minor things (five minutes or less) that need addressed essential to the day’s successful flow, maybe get a small bite of something if I absolutely need to, and settle in my recliner. Then, interspersed with some spontaneity:
  • The morning offering
  • Papal intentions and other short daily prayers for specific causes (these social justice themed prayers change daily and are published by a religious order; I subscribe)
  • Memorare
  • prayers from the order I’m attached to
  • my own personal list of intentions
  • Morning Prayer (i.e., Lauds)
I’ve got all of the above down to 25-ish minutes, more or less, depending on the day. On weekdays, I may need to abbreviate some if I overslept; on weekends, I can usually add some spiritual reading to the end. {And the weekend routine often begins an hour or two later in the day, but is still much the same otherwise.}

I say some prayers before I get out of bed.
And it is the last thing I do once in bed for the night.

I definitely prayed (mostly) this way before. Obviously, certain specific prayers were added after it was appropriate to include them (I wasn’t praying in unity with the order until I was part of it, so why include their specific prayers? In some cases, I only learned the prayers as part of that community because they aren’t really widely shared elsewhere.)

The order has helped me frame my inner spiritual approach to these prayer practices, though, and I can also say that I believe my prayer routine lended itself to the discernment process of which community to join. (I had about 4 options of realistic equality before I had a way to “measure” them spiritually.)

My first prayer on getting out of bed is, “God, thank you for bringing me through the night. Thank you for giving me another day. Let this be a day of a healing for all those who are sick and a day that I can be of service to You and to Your people.” While shaving and showering, I pray the Memorare, Angelus, and Morning Offering. If it’s a workday, I head to church for part of my Rosary followed by Morning Prayer and Mass.

I hope that God rewards effort, because to be honest, I’m not a morning person by nature and my first prayers are often, shall we say, less than contemplative in nature.

Edited to add: To answer the original question, “First thing in the morning, how do you pray?”…my honest self-evaluation is, “Half asleep.” 🙂

I usually wake up to the 6 am Angelus alarm so if I’m awake enough I’ll start trying to stumble through that while I finish waking up and make my way to the bathroom or after I am done. If I am not awake enough, I say it later.

When I first wake up I have tried to say “Bless this day” as the Christian guy does in the movie version of “Sometimes a Great Notion”. I then read or heard that Mother Teresa always started her day by saying “Good Morning Jesus”, so I started saying “Good Morning Jesus, bless this day.” It usually gets said while I’m still laying down or just getting up.

I don’t kneel in the morning and I don’t have a prayer corner or anything, I’m sadly disorganized and also I’m not a morning person at all, so the above is about all I can manage usually. It can be physically difficult for me to wake up too fast or get out of bed too fast. Most of my praying is done later in the day when I am awake.

I usually wake up at 5:00AM…pray to God…to guide me in everything I say and do,
to give me peace, to live but for today and no worry what’s ahead, to give me the courage that I need to face life’s trials, and keep this thought in mind…thy will not mine be done…
I then get up and go turn the coffee maker on and return to the bedroom to light a candle…go back and get a cup of coffee, and go back and sit near the candle and peacefully Pray the Rosary… 🙂

Still in bed.
Do you kneel by the bedside floor? Do you immediately say the rosary?
(1) I don’t kneel.

(2) I say the rosary, but usually at night, with EWTN.
Do you go and get breakfast first or spend time with God first?
Prayer first.
What specific prayer(s) do you say?
Mostly the standard prayers my mother taught me (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, etc. and a few others).

“Mediation on the mysteries is the most important part of the Rosary. Put yourself in the place of Jesus or Mary and live the mysteries with them.”

I’m a morning person so pray about an hour in the morning before work. I love the quiet of the dark and then watching the dawn come. Morning offering, morning prayer from the LOTH, Divine Mercy novena (perpetual, for me), some personal prayers to Our Lady, St. Joseph, and the saints, and the Rosary. I’m a very slow Rosary pray-er and try to make it really meditative. I go to Mass at noon most days, and I do evening prayer from the LOTH at night. I’m usually very tired in the evenings and can’t do much more.

First thing in the morning I get on Catholic Answers and start praying for others … that’s truly how I try to live … praying first for others and then hopefully the Lord will remember my needs as I do that.

Oh, and I do have a lot of prayer threads that I pray in on Catholic Answers for personal things … like praying for my daughter and grandchildren and my husband … so I say prayers in those … and I do have one for my physical health also.

  1. Our Father
  2. Hail, Mary
  3. Glory be
  4. Oh, my Jesus (with litany of names who need His mercy)
  5. Come, Holy Spirit
  6. Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel
  7. Prayer for the holy souls in purgatory

I pray a Rosary on my way to work. I also thank God for the gift of another day and pray for my children and husband. I also pray to my guardian angel and to St. Michael.

I am the least morning person you will ever meet. Like ‘don’t talk to me till ten am’ kind of level. When the alarm goes off I drag myself outta bed, make the sign of the cross and just say ‘thank you’ that’s all I can manage. It is really hard for me to get outta bed and always has been. But God understands as He made me that way 😂. Then we have morning prayer at work and by then I feel better

I try to say the morning offering before my feet touch the floor, trying to use that first moment I am awake to give to God. Unfortunately I haven’t been sleeping well lately so I never really know if it’s my first moment or not. Lest I get into a spiral of overthink, I might swap to a Jesus prayer everytime I wake up and the Offering before my feet hit the ground.

Then I read and reflect on the daily Mass readings while drinking a cup of coffee.

Then the rest of the house wakes up and chaos commences.

I really love questions like this. I love getting to learn about people’s habits and prayer lives. You just never know when someone will introduce you to a practice that fits you just right!
