I am a Red Sox fan who married a Yankee fan (and a Giants fan, when I have Patriots logos on my car!). He has been informed, in no uncertain terms, that our children will be raised Red Sox fans. I tell him sports fandom is like Judaism, it gets passed down through the mother :hmmm:

Plus, we live in New England, and I would hate for our kids to grow up as the only Yankee fans in Red Sox Nation. And then there is the fact that my mom is a huge Red Sox fan, lives quite close, and will probably take it on herself to make sure that each kid has a complete Red Sox wardrobe!
So, mixed marriages DO exist? Wow! Can it work?!!

Tell me in 20 years! 😛

and if i were to add a 7th item? at least once a season, watch together **Raising Arizon **or **The Castle **(the australian film.) laugh till you cry. repeat the stupid lines to each other for days. (i know number 5 on the original list says smile, but i recommend laugh – laugh hard.)
Just curious, Monica … why these two in particular? I’ve seen The Castle but not Raising Arizona.

OK, I know pressure when I see it. Modified list:

5a: Must love Red Sox and Patriots. God knows those fans have faith!
In 2004, I prayed for the Boston Red Sox to come back (I mean that literally)-I prayed for them. My agnostic leaning friend emailed me after they won the game and said “Bro, you might be on to something with the God thing!”

Raising Arizona… Got 10 minutes into it… If DH made me watch that to the end… it would be over. I could not watch it… LOL… so maybe movies that you BOTH laugh at.

We watched one the other day. Terribly inappropriate, but there was one line in it… And we’ve decided to scream it whenever things are insane…

“Where are we??? MiddleEarth? Get us to the Airport already!” Ok, I had to clean it up!

DH and I have been together since High School. We are made fun of by family and friends because we often don’t finish sentances, because we know how it’s going to end. And we do respond to each other with lines from a movie or tv show…

My Mother always swears up and down that “when they said until death do us part, you died when you were 30… not 80 or 100”… Makes me think of EasterJoy’s comment… Homocide maybe… divorce… no way!

Good List!

We do that too! I think its very important for a couple to have their own “shorthand” and a shared sense of humor.

I’m also right there with ya on Raising Arizona. Not my thing.

This is my list for the five most important things in a marriage. My marriage in fact. Comments, additions, corrections and discussions welcome.

By way of disclosure, I have been married for 31 years, am a cradle catholic, my wife is a convert, have 4 grown up kids and have been through a lot of what life can thow at you, good and bad.

I digress my top five are:

  1. *]Total devotion to God
*]Honor and love your spouse with all your heart and body
*]Communicate with each other all the time
*]Address problems together. Unite and conquer.
*]Smile, this is a life sentence … have fun together

  1. My husband and I have been married for 16 years, 2 boys (15 & 10), both of us are Catholic we’ve been blessed. I am grateful God gave him to me, because I am a pain:blush:

And this is an Awesome list…
one of the things we “subscribe to is” Good Enough Isn’t we are always striving for both personal best and family best. To be better together. Some days are better than others. We love to laugh and laughter is the best medicine. Also he lets me yell at the TV, talk during movies, and watch the Cowboys and Spurs with Dad.

And if you can volunteer together. We volunteer together and it is an awesome experience and something to pass on to the children.

Could not agree more. We have done a food ministry and prison ministry together and it’s awesome. My wife came in to participate on a 3 day prison retreat with me last month and it was incredible.

Doing stuff together is often the best way to understand each other and get on the same team. She also happens to work with me as well, which many friends do NOT understand at all. …

All the responses are very, very good. I have only been married little over 2 years but in that span of time my husband and I have gone through a lot together. The two most important t hings in a marriage is faith (devotion to God, the sacaraments, pray time together) and a sense of humor. Even in the midst of my husband’s hospitalization last year, he was joking and we were able to laugh together. I think that is what makes marriage work. Another thing that is very, very important is communication. Always be open and don’t hide anything from your spouse.

Totally off-topic, sorry: Rapunzel, are those song lyrics in your signature? Where are they from? 🙂

You forgot the most important, key thing! I can’t believe you!

Never marry anyone who is a Yankee or Laker fan! Leave them alone so they can’t reproduce and hopefully they’ll die out!

Amen, Amen & Amen again. The Yankees rot and so do the Lakers. Long Live the Red Sox & Celtics.

Great list my friend.
You’re horrid! I am a Yankee fan and I will reproduce as much as I want, thank you very much!😛

Do you think that supporting the Yankees falls into the category of “Idol/Idle” worship? Perhaps you can get clarification on your next confessional visit. :bowdown2:

Are you serious that supporting a baseball team is idol worship? If so, I know a lot of priests that need some guidance.

in our house, any movie with lines like, “mordecai! get that daper off yer head and put it back on yer sister!” and a theme like this: youtube.com/watch?v=_8xsYKrx5eE is bound to be a definitive favorite.

for more than 20 years, any one of our kids could be heard saying, “give me that baby, you warthog from hell!” or "we released ourselves on our own recognizance. we felt that the institution no longer had anything to offer us. "

when he used to come home from the steel mill looking partiucularly messed up i might say, “son, you got a panty o yer head.”

when we were neck deep in the kid chaos of ten kids, he still says, “We figured there was too much happiness here for just the two of us, so we figured the next logical step was to have us a critter.”

yup. too funny. and for us a little ingerdient in the marriage glue.

I was thinking about this yesterday at my daughter’s extremely LONG swim meet. Someone mentioned having an outside interest, away from the marriage. I think it also helps to have an interest or hobby that you share just as a couple, away from the roles of being parents or the other responsiblities of raising a family. And if your kids find that shared interest uncool or nerdy, more bonus points. We like to go to old bookstores and look for out of print editions or hard to find books. Its not the same as looking online, we will take an afternoon and just go together and maybe stop for coffee or something. Its not even the books that matter, but that we have the shared interest together.

Thanks everybody for posting this…it’s great preparation!!

And I’ll second Monicatholic on the Raising Arizona! In our family it was absolutely golden…but my family, hands down, quotes National Lampoons Christmas Vacation like it’s going out of style. Whenever us kids would complain, my mom would say “I have to sleep with your father. We’re all making sacrifices.” :rotfl:

Now that all my siblings have kids, Christmas is even crazier. So when things go nutty, we all say “Well it’s Christmas and…we’re all in misery.” Or if we’re all nit-picking at each other, one person will yell out “ELLEN! Are you smoking again!?!” And the rest of us yell back, “NOOO!” Shared movies can definitely provide a “family language” that’s incredibly bonding and helps to ease the tension at rough moments.

Couldn’t agree more with you about the Yankees.

As for the Lakers, better the Lakers than the Heat.

It’s better to be married to a Yankees fan than a Vikings fan…

Oh, this is a GOOD one. I don’t like the Heat at all, but it is a recent thing. I’ve hated the Lakers for all of my 30 years!
