Though I doubt our president “hates” Britain, the bolded portion is, in fact, true. There is no need for the quotation marks around the word colonialist.

How about the important figurehead saluting the flags as they walk-by? Those countries are what make the Olympics. Not the Queen, not Obama.

My step-father remembers rescuing many an American from shooting himself in his own foot - the Americans were rushed in to Burma without much preparation; they were mostly teenagers looking for a bit of excitement - according to him, most of them had never seen real blood before.

I believe that the U.S. is the only country where the flag is an object of near worship. There were penalties if the flag were to be burned as a form of protest, e.g. The U.S. Supreme Court, however, ruled (and rightly so IMO) that punitive enforcement of the Flag Code would conflict with the First Amendment right to freedom of speech.

Well, what else do we have. The Constitution, to be sure but that’s rather abstract. Most folks aren’t sure what’s in it and disagree about that.

The flag is our monarchy, representing unity & continuity, going thru a numerous changes back to the birth of the nation. Pushing the analogy further, each has suffered one civil war/interregnum.

As for to dip or not to – who cares?
My standard would be: is the flag routinely dipped for heads of State? If not, then don’t do it now.
