Yeah, I’m wondering that too. Is this an anti-brown people thing, or…?

Wait. So the fact that only the military does follow a law (since there is no penalty) means that the law only applies to the military despite the law not saying this? The fact that you won’t be fined or imprisoned for not showing respect to the flag doesn’t means you shouldn’t.

And really, whether we’ve dipped the flag in the past or not doesn’t matter. I don’t think anyone here thinks we’ve never made mistakes. We shouldn’t be in the habit of doing such things to foreign rulers, and we shouldn’t expect foreign countries to do it for us.

It’s true that the flag is just a symbol, but it’s our symbol. You can argue all you want that other people will see it as nothing more than a sign of respect to dip the flag. But our flag is our symbol not theirs, and if our tradition says that dipping the flag would be more than that and unacceptable, then we shouldn’t do it. And since it’s our flag, others should either accept that or get over it, not expect us to defy our rules for the sake of pleasing parade choreography.

If you think it’s silly that our rules forbid dipping a flag, then you can try to change our rules and make in generally considered acceptable to do so, but until then there is no reason to say we should just ignore our rules about our flag to make other people more happy about how a stupid parade looks.
I agree, but it appears that we may be forced to.

Were you wearing a Che shirt?
ummm. No. Don’t have one.

The point I was trying to make is that people jump to conclusions, since of course you know that the tune is the same.

Alright, I’m outta here. This thread is getting me angry and I don’t want to be angry.

It’s wholly optional.

Duly noted as your opinion.

Again, it’s optional.

We can be as arrogant as we like. Others expect that from us.

Well, problem solved then. I’d hate to disappoint them. I mean, it’d be better if they learned that our respect for the flag is not arrogant, but failing that at least they won’t be surprised.

“Optional” or not, we should be respecting our flag at official functions.

No one is talking about peeing on the flag in front of the Queen. It’s a simple dip of it in a gesture of respect to the dignitary of a friendly nation, a thank you for hosting the games…what about that is “disrespecting the flag”? This does seem like near idol worship, I shall have to dwell on that a little.

I’m wondering which is the most pressing issue facing our world in these troubled times:

failure to dip a flag to a head of state, or Romney’s comments on the London Olympics?

:hmmm:

Race has nothing to do with it. I don’t appreciate words being put into my mouth.
I didn’t, I asked. A lot of bigots use that language to describe the problems they see with society, hence the confusion.

Even still, if someone who hates multi-culturalism believes that you should “blend in” with an existing culture, would they not also believe that all of the Olympians, from all around the world, should “blend in” with British culture? In which case, why would the flag-dipping be a problem? 🤷

I beleve that there is at least some “flag worship” in our country. You might have noticed how eager some politicians are, periodically, to make the Flag Code mandatory, complete with criminal penalties for non-compliance.

Yeah yeah yeah, the Left will cry about anything. Just keep Old Glory flying tall and proud to let Her Majesty know…We still ain’t comin’ back to the crown.👍
Us FORMER colonists don’t want Tea anymore!

Why should anyone have to dip their flag?
